CB Horse Rescue is a small horse rescue in Spencerville, IN. You could consider us a hospice for tired animals because the animals we take in cannot be rehomed. We take in horses with various medical problems, as an alternative to being euthanized or being sold as horse meat; we take in horses who have no other chance. Most of our horses cannot be used as work horses or ridden any longer. Each of
our horses are unique, as are their histories and situations. Some animals came in sick, elderly, with disabilities, abandoned, crippled, abused, or for another reason entirely. We take in horses that need a loving and caring home. We love volunteers, donations, and the general efforts to help from the public. Every little bit is important, and we are immensely appreciative of it. If you are interesting in donating, becoming a team member, or in any other ways helping, please contact us. CB was founded in 1997 by Vaunetta Barnhill, who remains the director. It was started with an Arabian mare named Flabby. She was originally owned by a very good Arabian farm, but there came a point when she could no longer be used as a brood mare and had extensive health problems. The farm eventually contacted Vaunetta (who had owned horses previously in her life) to take her in for the rest of her life. They could not afford to keep her at this point and resented the idea of selling her at Shipshewana. Vaunetta, of course, took her in and gave her loving home for the remainder of her life. Vaunetta had begun working at Red Cedar around the time that she got Flabby. She realized the need for "forever homes" for horses that can no longer service humans. Chocolate Box grew from there. "My mama always said, 'life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get.'"
