Important alert for our clients and other pet owners alike!
In early-October, several cases of a highly contagious respiratory infection were presented in various dogs throughout the country, and now in Spokane.
When initially discovered, the respiratory infection was thought to be Kennel Cough, and has presented with kennel cough-like symptoms (loud cough, eye discharge, wheezing;) however, later on many pets developed cases of severe pneumonia, which established standard methods of antibiotics & treatment have seemed to be ineffective against.
At this time, although it is unknown how widespread the new respiratory infection is/will be throughout Spokane, we recommend keeping your pets up to date on both Bordetella (Kennel Cough) and DHLPPC (distemper/hepatitis/lepto/parainfluenza/parvo/coronavirus) vaccines. If your pet is/begins exhibiting any signs of coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, wheezing, please seek veterinary care.
Additionally with holidays approaching, we imagine many clients/pet owners will plan on boarding their pets during this time. If at all possible, we would like to encourage owners to refrain from boarding at this time. Rather, consider alternative supervision such as a house-sitter or dog-sitter while/if they are away for the holidays.
We will continue to keep everyone updated on this matter as more information is discovered. Thank you, and we hope everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving!
The mysterious respiratory illness that may have sickened thousands of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection, researchers say.
