Important alert for our clients and other pet owners alike!

In early-October, several cases of a highly contagious respiratory infection were presented in various dogs throughout the country, and now in Spokane.
When initially discovered, the respiratory infection was thought to be Kennel Cough, and has presented with kennel cough-like symptoms (loud cough, eye discharge, wheezing;) however, later on many pets developed cases of severe pneumonia, which established standard methods of antibiotics & treatment have seemed to be ineffective against.

At this time, although it is unknown how widespread the new respiratory infection is/will be throughout Spokane, we recommend keeping your pets up to date on both Bordetella (Kennel Cough) and DHLPPC (distemper/hepatitis/lepto/parainfluenza/parvo/coronavirus) vaccines. If your pet is/begins exhibiting any signs of coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, wheezing, please seek veterinary care.

Additionally with holidays approaching, we imagine many clients/pet owners will plan on boarding their pets during this time. If at all possible, we would like to encourage owners to refrain from boarding at this time. Rather, consider alternative supervision such as a house-sitter or dog-sitter while/if they are away for the holidays.

We will continue to keep everyone updated on this matter as more information is discovered. Thank you, and we hope everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving!

The mysterious respiratory illness that may have sickened thousands of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection, researchers say.

Happy Halloween! πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

🍁 As you enjoy the festivities, remember to keep your pets safe and secure, especially with all the extra excitement in the air. Listed below are a few quick tips to ensure a happy and safe Halloween for your four-legged companions:

🍬 Treat Watch:
Keep the candy dish out of your pet's reach. Chocolate, especially dark or baking chocolate, can be toxic to pets. Xylitol, often found in sugar-free candies, can also be harmful.

🌟 Costume Comfort:
If your pet is joining in on the costume fun, ensure their outfit is comfortable and doesn't restrict movement. Opt for pet-friendly costumes without small, dangling pieces that could be chewed off.

πŸ”¦ Nighttime Visibility:
If you're taking your pet out for some trick-or-treating fun, consider using reflective gear or a light-up collar to ensure visibility, especially as the night gets darker.

πŸšͺ Trick-or-Treater Caution:
With the door frequently opening for trick-or-treaters, there's an increased risk of your pet slipping out unnoticed. Ensure your pet has a properly fitted collar with an updated ID tag, or consider microchipping for added security.

From all of us here at Heart Arrow, have a howling good time and a safe Halloween! 🧑🍁

Holiday Pet Safety Tips From VetriMark
Nothing can spoil holiday cheer like an emergency visit to a veterinary clinic. Help
prevent a holiday disaster and keep your fur babies safe during the winter holidays
with these nine tips.
1. Keep holiday plants out of reach of pets, especially holly, mistletoe and lilies.
2. Don’t leave your pet alone in the room with lit candles, a decorated tree, or
potpourri.
3. Skip the tinsel on your tree.
4. Make sure your pet doesn’t have any access to human treats, especially those
containing chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, onions or other toxic foods.
5. Skip the table scraps. Keep people food out of the reach of your pet, and ask your
guests to do the same.
6. Secure your Christmas tree to keep it from falling over if your dog bumps it or your
cat climbs it. Hanging lemon-scented car air fresheners in the tree may deter your
cat from climbing it.
7. Use electrical cord covers for lights and wires to prevent pets chewing.
8. Provide a safe place for your pet to escape the excitement (such as a kennel,
crate, perching place, scratching post shelf or hiding place). If your pet is excitable
or scared, consider putting your pet in another room with some toys and a
comfortable bed.
9. Know where to go in an emergency. Whether you are traveling or stay in town,
know where your closest 24/7 emergency vet clinic is before an emergency occurs.

It's that time of year again! Here are some tips to keeping your pet safe during the holiday!
10/19/2021

It's that time of year again! Here are some tips to keeping your pet safe during the holiday!

ACCORDING TO THE AVMA, THERE ARE 6 THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR PET ON HALLOWEEN:

1) Don't feed your pets Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum);

2) Make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case s/he escapes through the open door while you're distracted with trick-or-treaters;

3) Keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach of pets;

4) If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, doesn't have any pieces that can easily be chewed off, and doesn't interfere with your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, opening its mouth, or moving. Take time to get your pet accustomed to the costume before Halloween, and never leave your pet unsupervised while he/she is wearing a costume;

4) Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from your pets. Although the liquid in these products isn't likely toxic, it tastes really bad and makes pets salivate excessively and act strangely;

5) If your pet is wary of strangers or has a tendency to bite, put him/her in another room during trick-or-treating hours or provide him/her with a safe hiding place;

6) Keep your pet inside

The current state of the veterinary industry is not due to one problem, but many different ones - the sharp increase in new pets, the closures from the pandemic, limited hospital capacity, a shortage of veterinary staff, and the emotional and financial stress across the country.
