This is a simple catio that came with the house and although it needs a bit of an update it still provides a safe place for the cats to enjoy the outdoors, helps keep wildlife safe, and it is the best napping spot in the neighborhood. Future plans include a see-through floor, new paint, more comfy beds, and a second floor addition complete with ramps, planks, and a hammock.

September is Animal Pain Awareness month. As the IVAPM explains, aging isn’t a disease, but pain is. Please take the time to observe your pets behavior to see if they may need to take a visit to your family veterinarian. Adaptive devices such as ramps, stairs, or simply laying down a rug to improve traction is a great way to start easing your pets life as they age. Catios and Coops have been fortunate enough to work with amazing Animal Rehabilitation veterinarians in order to help our own pets improve their pain. Please contact us if you are interested in any ramps, stairs, or unique ideas in your home to help your pet’s mobility!

Had a blast building this catio. Complete with lots of ramps and shelves for zooming around on or napping. A 5' tall scratching post for climbers. And windows that open to allow for plant watering and garden tending. This was our last project in Sacramento but one of our favorites! Now building in Spokane, Washington.

Check it out! Just finished a fun catio. Features include a floor to ceiling scratching post (over 8 ft tall!), lots of shelves, ramps, and napping platforms. This catio is a perfect place for cats to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment.

December has been a busy month for Catio and Coops. This Redwood coop is finished and ready for the chickens to move in. Complete with linoleum floors, secure chicken run, elevated roosting perches, and much more.

Here was a fun project we just finished for two cats, Mickey and Toonces. The shelves and stairs will allow these cats to climb up and over the fence more easily with less stress on their joints. Plus offer great places to nap while their owner works in the yard.

Our older cat has been having trouble jumping onto the bed. I threw together a quick fix idea to help her out and she quickly caught on and is now able to safely get on and off the bed. Stay tuned for the final product! (Excuse the unmade bed and messy room!)

How it started… how it’s GROWING!
These guys were definitely built for myself, but that doesn’t stop Dae-z and Wall-nut from stopping by a chomping on some chard. New planter (right) box really coming in handy for some delicious tomatoes. Just an example of simple but important jobs carpentry can do!

Wondering where all the catio and coop pictures have been?

Not only does the carpenter love our domesticated furry friends, but also the wild ones! Jonathan is headed off to Lassen Volcanic National Park for the next 3 months where he will be collecting data for pika conservation and the effects plague has on this alpine mammal. While he is out helping these pika and other small mammals, we are still ready to take on new projects, however, these projects will start in October once he is back. So keep those ideas about your cats new playground or dogs new outdoor agility course flowing and message us for any special woodworking projects. We are happy to work with your schedule!
We will be sure to post some cool pics of the conservation work Jonathan will be doing this summer!

The queen comes down from her thrown and wins a stare down…. Get it? 😂

A few cool things here we want to show you all: these steps were designed to be easily moved around to different structures and areas of our home. Outside you can see our first (rough) catio we made for these guys and is actually 2 levels high. The playground looking thing is a prototype we’re working on and learning more and more everyday about ways to improve it.

Behold the little known worm bin! This little guy was built out fencing scraps and an old plastic bin. Red worms are a fantastic way to quickly break down compost. Not only do they produce beautiful soil, but the water that accumulates from the breakdown creates a wholesome “worm tea” that can be added to the garden as fertilizer. Shout out to these fantastic worms!

Meet the Catio and Coops carpenter and owner, Jonathan Bowser! It’s important to know who you’re working with, so we thought we’d take todays post to meet the craftsman himself!
Starting off in Arizona, Jonathan has always had excitement for the outdoors and wildlife. So much so he’s spent most of his career as a conservation biologist and spending the off season as a carpenter. From the high hills of New Mexico to the Great Plains of South Dakota, he’s ventured to various places to study wildlife disease ecology and contribute to conservation efforts. Now, while still helping with wildlife conservation in the summer months, he is using his unique carpenter skills to help those animals closer to home through Catios and Coops! Project completed! From gathering materials to assembly, this was a fun build! This kitty has a new place to roam around while their owners can still use the window for themselves too! This is a great example of how a catio does not need to take up a lot of space and can be easily installed according to your home's structure. Excited for upcoming projects- who's next?!

No project complete without the aide of a sleepy dog. Lucy here is helping me finish up my latest catio. This catio is custom made to fit a small window but will open up to a larger outdoor area for the kitty to get some fresh air and play time!

Catios and Coops first cat box is for sale! This cat box allows your kitty to keep their business private as well as provides a space for them to nap, snack or look out the window. Check out the stairs we made for our senior cat to allow her to hang out on the box and windowsill without compromising her arthritic bones. The box features a lid assist to allow you to easily access the litter box as well as a painted interior for easy clean-up. Big dog, little fence. This fence was built for this great dane who stands 3 feet tall. It allows his humans to have outside cookouts without his nose getting into the goodies or sniffing the hot grill.

As our pets get older they aren’t able to jump or move like they used to. Here I am getting some ideas and measurements to build my supervisor (seen to the left of me) a new ramp and stairs to her custom catio!

Loaf- to avoid activity, especially work. There was no loafing for me when building this goat loafing shed. Loafing sheds are simple structures that provide shelter for animals to get out of the sun or rain.
