Specialized Pet Solutions is grateful to be part of the animal rescue network, where we all work to give animals a chance to live their best lives. It’s a small group where we look out for the animals and each other.

That’s why we are thrilled to share this photo of Cheri from Higher Ground Animal Sanctuary / Inland Northwest Animal Sanctuary in Mead. She always needs blankets for crates or kennels, but just look at how many are in the back of her car!

It all started with a news story from Melinda Lee TV on KHQ Local News. Then, donors gave us piles of blankets and fabric. We, in turn, gave them to our long-time friend and supporter, Jan Thomas. She worked her magic and created 50 crate pads for dogs and cats and about 20 blankets.

Jan found her niche sewing for Higher Ground after she retired. "It takes a village to support the system," Jan explained. Whether it's physical work with the animals or donating money or food, it just takes a lot of people to pull off a rescue. My niche is to help at adoption events and sew.”

Thank you, Jan, for working to ensure that animals have a chance to lead their best lives. (We're pretty thrilled you are tight with our mom, too.) You continue to make a difference in so many lives!

Now that the whirlwind of the holidays is over and we have had time to reflect upon the last year, we realize that a very special person was born right before Christmas, and we need to take the time to celebrate him for the man he is. Our "Pops" was born on December 20th, and we took him to lunch at La Presa Mexican Restaurant - Airway Heights for his birthday. He came into our lives when we were in our terrible pre-teens, and he was the father figure that we desperately needed despite our best efforts to dissuade him from that. He was kind, easy, and entirely out of his element, but we broke him in really good, LOL! We were four kids starving for a decent male role model. He stepped in and never looked back. He is our father, our dad, our champion. He is everything a father should be, and more so, because he chose us, he decided to be ours, he chose the hell we put him through, and he decided to love us anyway. He is no longer our stepfather but our dad. He will forever have our hearts. We love you, Pops!

The Specialized Pet Solutions mission to help animals live their best lives is getting nationwide attention. We are so excited to announce our collaboration with the Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at the Veterinary Health Center, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri.

A veterinarian and vet technician came all the way to Spangle, WA, to visit Specialized Pet Solutions. Jill Ward, a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinary Nurse (CCRVN), explained why the visit was so important.

“We've been very pleased with Specialized Pet’s work and the outcomes for our patients,” said Ward. “We wanted to see directly how prosthetics and orthotics are made to see how to serve our customers best.”

Ward found Specialized Pet Solutions through a simple internet search. A quick phone call led to a brace being developed and fitted long distance for a Missouri dog which had great outcomes.

Now, there is an exciting new opportunity at the University of Missouri to examine patients in orthotic braces. In the CVM’s motion analysis laboratory. Findings may support Specialized Pet Solution’s new design for a stifle brace that may better help dogs regain function and mobility following a Cranial Cruciate Ligament tear (the canine version of a human ACL injury) that cannot be treated by surgery.

“We are excited to be part of this study," said Angela Boncz, owner of Specialized Pet Solutions. "It is long overdue, and with the recent shift to conservative management ideologies and the increasing acceptance of animal rehab, we believe this work will help solidify our role in this groundbreaking field and help prove once and for all that our stifle braces work to improve function and quality of life following CCL tears without surgery!”

The University of Missouri's Dr. Bess Pierce, a board-certified specialist in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, hopes to foster that mutually beneficial approach.

“Their work gives us such a great tool to optimize the quality of life in many of our patients,” said Pierce. “Angela is amazing. She thinks outside the box and has such advanced skills. It’s a great team approach that can potentially improve the outcome of CCL disease and give us more options for treatment."

A life-changing mission: Meet the woman helping injured pets thrive.

For many of us, pets are more than just animals; they are family. We will do whatever it takes to ensure their happiness and well-being. In Washington and Idaho, where an estimated 60-70% of people have pets, providing adequate care when our furry friends are injured can sometimes feel overwhelming. Traditional healthcare for pets isn’t always affordable or accessible.

That’s why Angela Boncz decided to create Specialized Pet Solutions, a business focused on building and fitting orthotics and prosthetics for pets.

This is Angela’s story and the story of Diesel, a four-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer and Terrier mix.

Diesel tore his CCL, the canine equivalent of a human ACL, about five months ago. Diesel’s injury left him, a normally athletic and energetic dog, feeling depressed and lethargic. But his family had hope that a custom brace would restore his mobility and spirit.

That hope led them to Specialized Pet Solutions, where Angela Boncz designs and creates braces for animals of all shapes and sizes.

Angela Boncz began her career helping humans, graduating from an orthotics and prosthetics technical program at Spokane Falls Community College.

But everything changed when she adopted a dog in need. “The surgery my dog needed was beyond what I could afford,” Boncz explained. “So, I decided to try making a brace myself. It worked, and that was my lightbulb moment,” said Boncz.

She began crafting braces for pets while working as a subcontractor for other companies. Then, in 2017, a chance encounter solidified her new career path. Boncz said, “I rescued a three-legged miniature pony,” she recalled. “That’s when I knew this was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”

Specialized Pet Solutions serves a wide variety of animals, from traditional pets like dogs to farm animals. On average, the company creates 10-15 braces per week, though the workload can vary.

Despite the growing demand, not everyone agrees on the efficacy of braces for pets. Boncz is collaborating with a university to study how dog knee braces impact recovery. “We’re working to determine if braces truly help or if they’re neutral,” she explained. “But based on our experience and feedback, we’ve seen significant improvements in many pets—as long as the braces are fitted correctly.”

For Diesel and his family, the impact is clear. As Angela adjusted Diesel’s new brace, his owner’s excitement was palpable. “I’m so excited for this brace,” his owner said. “It’s going to change his outlook on life. He’ll be able to enjoy being active again.”

Call it a love affair born from necessity and cemented by a one-of-a-kind road trip.

Specialized Pet Solutions owner Angela Boncz first heard of Baby Ella, the donkey, when she received a frantic call for help in 2019 from the man who’d rescued her from a New Jersey Farm. The farmer didn’t want her after she was born with what we would call an extreme knock-knee. One of her legs bowed inward towards the midline of her body, creating the knock knee or valgum of the knee.

Ella’s rescuer, Bob, started to look for help. He shared a video of Ella with Angela. “I immediately fell in love with her sassy spirit,” Angela remembered.

But there was a catch. Ella and her rescuer lived in New Jersey, while Angela lived eight hours away in Virginia. As she grew, Ella would need several sizes of braces, each of which would need to be adjusted. Bob asked Angela if she would take Ella, and Angela jumped at the chance.

"I made the trip to New Jersey from Virginia to pick up that little ball of fluff and had her ride shotgun," Angela said. "She was four months old and a great little co-pilot on that trip."

Six years later, Angela and Baby Ella are still together. They moved from Virginia to Spangle. That’s where Angela runs Specialized Pet Solutions and works to help other animals live their best lives. Ella doesn’t ride shotgun anymore. (A trip around the Capital Beltway in Washington, D.C., changed that arrangement.) But Angela’s love for that “sassy” ball of fluff hasn’t changed, no matter the miles or the passage of time.

Specialized Pet Solutions set out on a simple mission – take a holiday photo with Nova, Rooster, and Gracie. However, the dogs had other ideas. The holiday zoomies started even after business owner Angela Boncz stepped into the mix. Despite the challenge of the photo shoot, we’re grateful for our fur baby friends and the opportunity to help other animals live their best lives. Whether you celebrate Hannukah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa, we hope your holiday season is filled with love, hope, and pets of all kinds.😆

The team at Specialized Pet Solutions is excited to share our message with KREM 2 News viewers thanks to photojournalist Dave Somers.

Dave followed our work with Diesel, a German Pointer/Pitbull Mix with the cutest face you can imagine!

Diesel tore his CCL. That’s the canine equivalent of our ACL. But he’s sporting a brand-new stifle brace instead of facing expensive and invasive surgery.

Diesel's mom is as excited as we are to see his progress. "I wish I had gone sooner,” C. Fermo said. “I’m excited to see the improvement in our pup's healing and how much more active he will be able to be!”

Thank you, Diesel and Dave! We can’t wait to see your progress and Dave's story on KREM 2 News.

"Angela at Specialized Pet Solutions has blessed my little mini horse, Bella! She has severely contracted tendons and has undergone three operations to try and correct her bent fetlocks with limited success. With one front hoof bent almost backward, we were looking at the end until Angela came into the picture. She devised a sturdy, strap-on leg brace with a 'stirrup' foot, which has given Bella both the balance and freedom of movement she had lost. Specialized Pet Solutions has also backed up its product and TWICE has adjusted the brace to fit Bella's changing needs. I cannot recommend them highly enough. A ten-star company!" -- Julie De Long ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Patrick Swayze once said, "They told me my house smelled like dogs, and I asked them, do you know what a dog smells like? It smells like gratitude, loyalty, nobility, affection, and pure, unconditional love. And in spite of all they've been through, they smell no resentment. I am so blessed that my house smells like dogs."

Baby Ella, the donkey and Prince, the pony, are dressed up and ready to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. The two are rocking their turkey and pilgrim costumes at the Specialized Pet Solutions ranch near Spangle. Thanks to owner Angela Boncz, both are mobile. Baby Ella wears a brace, and Prince a prosthetic. Our team is thankful we could help the two live their best lives! And while some of you might be questioning our taste in holiday costumes, we couldn’t stop the fun “cold turkey!”

"If not for the life-saving work of Specialized Pet Solutions, our dear, sweet Herbie (a 5-year-old Holstein steer) would never have made it this far. Fabricating leg braces for an animal, this large is no easy task. But Angela – a true angel in our eyes – has the compassion, skill, creativity -- and tenacity -- to meet the very significant challenges that come with designing and refining leg braces for our Big Guy. We will always be grateful!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The team at Specialized Pet Solutions says goodbye with hearts filled with gratitude and love for an Alaskan Klee-Kai's indomitable spirit.

We shared Riley’s story with you earlier this year. About seven years ago, surgeons amputated Riley’s leg at what we would recognize as her wrist. That’s because the dog developed gangrene from an incorrectly applied cast.

We met her human, Evelyn Treacy when she launched a nationwide search for a prosthetic so Riley could run and play again.

Finally, she stumbled upon Specialized Pet Solutions' owner, Angela Boncz. “I flew there with Riley, pleading for her to please help this dog. Angela measured her and did a cast, and we went in a few days later, and Riley could walk,” said Evelyn.

And just like that, Evelyn and Angela started a seven-year relationship all aimed at giving Riley a shot at her best life. We followed Riley’s progress through Evelyn’s Instagram page called henrymatilda and celebrated life with Riley and her other dogs.

Then came the update we hoped never to see.

“It is with great sadness but with equally great gratitude for the joy and love with which she filled our lives that we announce the passing of our beloved Riley.

She beat all odds, surviving throat cancer and an amputation… but it was a severe case of aspirational pneumonia (that her compromised immune system could not tolerate) that took Riley from us. We are broken. 💔”

Fly high, Riley, the Alaskan Klee-Kai. We were honored to spend time with you and Evelyn. We remind ourselves of Evelyn’s words: “When everything seems so dark, and all hope is lost, there is always tomorrow.”

Missoula, Montana’s Tiffany Schaffer and her children know too well about loss. Now, thanks to Specialized Pet Solutions and a generous Eastern Washington company, their beloved family dog, Ruby, has a shot at living her best life.

Tiffany’s family is still recovering from her husband’s sudden passing. Then Ruby tore her CCL, the dog equivalent of her ACL. The vet recommended surgery, but the outlook wasn’t bright.

“Getting her the surgery with its $6,000 bill and a chance it would fail wasn’t an option,” said Tiffany.

She knew her family couldn’t take another loss, so she found Specialized Pet Solutions. Tiffany ordered a brace for Ruby, but then came another hit: She developed the same problem in her other leg. After spending money on the first brace and racking up a slew of other medical bills for herself and her children, she knew she couldn’t afford another brace.

Tiffany was out of hope, but thanks to Aspen Excavation, Ruby will get that second brace. Business owner John Campbell volunteered to sponsor it.

"We are just grateful that we are in a position to help this family and their pup,” Campbell said.

Other businesses can partner with Aspen Excavation to sponsor braces or prosthetics for animals whose families cannot afford these necessary devices. Thanks to Specialized Pet Solutions and Aspen Excavation, Tiffany, her kids, and Ruby face a holiday of hope in a long season of grief.

If you are a business that would like to sponsor a pet in need, please call 509-934-0067 to add your name to the sponsor list. Specialized Pet Solutions will highlight your business on their Social Media Pages.

Our Story

Where It All Began

Specialized Pet Solutions all started with Prince the pony. Prince was adopted back in 2005 and was my first client. Prince has been a wonderful friend through the years and I am so happy I took him in and started my journey to help animals.

About Us

We take pride in creating a high-quality product, providing great customer service, and our ability to help animals live a happy and healthy life. We work with some of the top companies in the animal orthotic and prosthetic industry.
