There have been two confirmed cases of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Spokane County. EHM is the neurologic form of EHV-1 (rarely caused by EHV-4), which can cause fatal neurologic disease. The signs are often fever, ataxia (wobbly gait), lethargy, nasal discharge, urinary and f***l incontinence, but can also progress to being down and unable to rise. This virus can also cause abortions, most often in late pregnant mares, as well as respiratory disease. If your horse is possibly exposed, please contact your veterinarian; horses should be quarantined per state veterinarian guidelines, and temperatures taken twice daily.
This disease is spread by contact with contaminated surfaces such as feed and water buckets, on tack or human clothing, nose-to-nose contact, and there is airborne spread.
There is no vaccine to prevent this form of EHV-1; however — in an exposed premises, the vaccines for the other forms of EHV may decrease viral shedding and help prevent spread of infection. We recommend limiting hauling for non-emergent reasons and reducing stress, especially in immunocompromised horses, as this can increase risk of spreading the disease.

Rant:
This is what 530$ looks like when it becomes a paper weight.( This is not a knock at the manufacturers fault). This happens a couple days ago. From stray nails, and rocks In feet, because of improper hoof clean out.

Remember proper care is; 4-8 week schedule, you picking a cleaning out your horses feet 2-3 times a week. You’d be surprised the amount of phone calls/or texts messages I receive saying hey my horse is lame. I asked when was the last time you cleaned you horses foot? And you say today. Then I show up and there’s a big ass rock wedged between the shoe and foot. Take responsibility and clean your horses feet. Us as farriers are trying to keep our tools nice and clean. But when this stuff happens it drives me up a wall. Because now I have to spend 200$-300 on another pair of nippers while I wait on a warranty replacement/ if they deem it as a warranty.

First time working on this guy, I saw his demeanor, as he saw mine. Gentle approach, and the horses usually 9/10 will work with you. This job is a tough one, but if you go about with a chip on your shoulder you will not get very far.

When I use to watch my dad shoe, I always wanted to learn the trade, after getting out of the Marines in 2017, I bounced around to many different jobs, not knowing what laid ahead. After having trouble to keep jobs, I decided to go the farrier route, and start a business myself. I’ve been in business for about 4 years know, and I haven’t looked back. The clientele I have acquired and friends I have made through this job are second to none. I’ve traveled to Florida to shoes big hunter jumpers, even was a farrier for the extreme million in Salina, Utah. The networking with this community is second to none. Remember if you want to chase something, go ahead and chase it. Don’t let anything hold you back.

Got to work on this 22 year old trail horse today, got him shined up and ready for the trail season. He is pretty sensitive to nailing as well, so I used a E Head mustad endura coated nail, which drives super smooth and fast.He’s a size 2 mustad equilibrium air shoe. Mustad USA
