Hey everyone!
This is just a reminder that this weekend (7/23-7/24) is our last full weekend we can do trimming before our hiatus. We still have available time slots on both days, so make sure to message us to schedule an appointment!
We're still discussing details about how we will proceed until we have another location to continue at. But rest assured, we'll make something work!

Update: Temporary Hiatus

Sorry I haven't been very active lately. There's been a lot going on. I do have unfortunate news. Due to an increase in rent, I have to move, and cannot continue to do grooming and boarding at the location I'll be staying at.

We will still be trimming at the same location on weekends through July 30th. But after that, we will have to take a little break, while we find another location. This is only temporary! We're trying our hardest to find a way to continue doing what we do. If anyone knows of somewhere we could continue grooming, please message the page. We love what we do and love seeing you and your birds.

This is Sosza! Don't let his petite size fool you, he is an amazon parrot! His species isn't common in the pet trade, so he's the first and only one of his kind we've seen. Can anyone guess what species of amazon he is?

One of the nice things about being a parrot groomer is the ability to groom your own flock. Although Mango the Blue & Gold Macaw is my sister's bird, he's been in the family for almost 17 years now! Isn't he just fabulous??

Last weekend we got to see Peaches (Lovebird) and Cody (Cockatiel), the cutest little odd couple 🥰

Disclaimer: Always use supervision when introducing birds to each other, especially if they're different species. It's never a guarantee that any two birds along, even if they're the same kind.

Foraging is very beneficial for our birds. Parrots are incredibly intelligent and require lots of mental and physical stimulation. This document has some great tips and ideas!

Foraging Made Easy: Foraging and enrichment for birds does not require a huge amount of training or time. Simple changes can make a big impact. For example, try cutting known food items into new shapes! Click the link below to download AAV’s foraging handout.

Today we got to transform one of the most unique beaks we've ever encountered. We've seen bottom beaks that are split into two, but Akie the Jardine's bottom beak is split into 3! It was definitely a challenge, but we were able to get his beak very close to normal.

Derp fact of the week:
Have you ever noticed anything unusual about Derpy's right foot? She has an extra toe! We've only seen a couple examples of parrots with extra toes. Derpy's is on the bottom of her foot, and it has no nail. The shape of it may look familiar if you like to eat Chex Mix... 😉

Meet Beau the Bourke’s parakeet.
Bourke’s parakeets are unique for their large eyes and ability to see in the dark! Beau enjoys flying around the bird room when it is dark and the other birds cannot see. He does this every night around 10 pm. Then, he retreats to his cage to sleep for the night.
Wild Bourke’s parakeets are observed in Australia becoming active before sunrise and after sundown, gathering food and water with little competition from other birds. They are not truly nocturnal, but they have remarkable night vision.

Happy Derpsday!
Derp fact of the week:
Derpy's color mutation is cinnamon blue, which is highly recessive and only seen in captive bred birds. In the wild, quakers are green so they can blend in with their environment.

Happy Derpsday: Throwback edition!

Have you wondered why Derpy has a short beak? She had bad parents! One of them bit part of her beak off the day she hatched. She had to be separated and raised by hand from day one.
Baby birds have soft beaks which are not yet fully developed, so Derpy healed quickly and adapted. Most parrots you see with a beak like this were injured very young, and fortunately have no memory of the injury.
