Acorn Danger for Dogs

Acorns are nuts from oak trees. They contain compounds called tannins that are harmful to dogs. When dogs eat them, they may suffer severe stomach upset, kidney failure, and sometimes even death. If you think your dog has eaten acorns, it’s best to call your veterinarian right away because delaying treatment can lead to permanent damage.

A dog may also experience acorn poisoning (also called Quercus poisoning) by eating oak leaves. It’s particularly dangerous for dogs to eat buds or oak leaves in the spring or green acorns in the autumn.

Symptoms can occur within a few hours of ingestion and may include:

*Loss of appetite
*Vomiting
*Diarrhea
*Abdominal pain
*Dehydration
*Shock

Treatment for Acorn Poisoning

If you think your dog ingested acorns, do not try to make them vomit. Depending on how many acorns your dog ingested, the size of your dog, and the severity of his reaction, he may need IV fluid rehydration, an X-ray to determine if there’s a blockage, or surgery. Your vet may prescribe medication to control vomiting, diarrhea, and pain. The veterinarian may also collect blood samples to evaluate the dog’s kidney and liver function.

Prevention is the best approach. Walk your dog on a leash during acorn season, avoiding areas with heavy ground covers of tree nuts, and teaching “leave it” or “drop it” commands to prevent your dog from eating harmful objects.https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-acorns-and-other-tree-nuts/

🐾❄️ Cold Weather Tips for Our Canine Companions ❄️🐾

As the chilly winter weather settles in, it's essential to ensure our furry friends stay safe and warm. At VCA North Division Animal Medical Center, we want to share some helpful tips to keep your dogs happy and healthy during the winter months:

🧥 Dress for the Weather: If your dog has short fur or is sensitive to the cold, consider a cozy doggy sweater or jacket to keep them warm.
🏡 Provide Shelter: Make sure your dog has access to a dry and draft-free shelter. Provide plenty of warm bedding for outdoor dogs.
🚿 Don't Over-Bathe: Avoid frequent baths in cold weather, as it can remove essential oils and dry out their skin.
🐾 Short Walks: Shorten your dog's walks in very cold weather, and be mindful of icy sidewalks and roads.
🐶 Paw Protection: Protect your dog's paws from ice, salt, and chemical de-icers by using pet-safe booties or paw wax.
🥇 Stay Active: Maintain regular exercise, but consider indoor activities like fetch or puzzle toys when it's bitterly cold.
🥤 Hydration: Ensure your dog has access to fresh, unfrozen water at all times.
🐕 Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: Keep an eye out for shivering, whining, or any unusual behavior that may indicate your dog is too cold.
🚗 Car Safety: If you travel with your dog, ensure they are safe and warm in the car with a blanket or dog seatbelt harness.

Remember that every dog is unique, and their tolerance for cold weather can vary. If you have concerns about your dog's well-being or specific cold-weather needs, our team at VCA North Division Animal Medical Center is here to help. Let's keep our canine companions safe and snug during the winter season! 🏥🐕❤️ 🌨🐾

National Cat Day October 29

Cats make excellent companions. They rarely miss you, but when they do, you sure know it. Awareness days such as this one urge pet lovers to adopt from a local shelter. The day also reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population.
Shelters are full of cats and kittens in need of forever homes. These feline fur babies come with as many personalities as they do colors and coats. They curl into our hearts and will just as quickly remind us they decide who they love. Whether they were born in the shelter, surrendered or abandoned, 3.4 million find their way to a shelter.
When considering the adoption of a furbaby, take your time. Each shelter animal will touch your heart, so be sure to find a life-long love.
*Consider your lifestyle. Will you have time for an active kitten or will an adult cat be more to your pace?
*Make multiple visits before making a choice. Sometimes, the purrfect cat will choose you.
*Spend one-on-one time with the cat so you have some bonding meowments and her true personality comes through.
*Do other members of your fur family need to be considered? If so, be sure to introduce them to be sure their personalities mesh.
*When you bring your new family member home, have a space ready for him to decompress and adjust to his new abode. Don’t be surprised if he hides at first. This is normal cat behavior.

Be careful this Halloween before your pet starts goblin treats they shouldn't. 🙀 Eat, drink, and be scary!

Make sure to look out for any treats that can be hazardous to your pet.🍬

Most Dangerous Halloween Treats for Dogs

As a pet parent, it’s your job to be super-careful about what’s accessible to your pet, because dogs generally love food and some will try to eat anything in sight. If your dog ate any of the items mentioned below, getting help should be easy.

Chocolate

Chocolate — especially dark and unsweetened baking chocolate — is one of the most dangerous substances your dog can eat, especially if it’s a small breed. It contains a chemical called theobromine which can be deadly to dogs.

Regular Candy

Any type of candy is harmful to dogs, including gummy candies, candy corn, hard candies and all sugary snacks. Sugar isn’t permitted in a dog’s diet, and candy overindulgence can lead to a range of health issues.

Candy Wrapper

Candy wrappers are a choking hazard. Be sure to have someone on cleanup duty at Halloween parties with dogs present, especially if young kids are around.

Xylitol (Bubble Gum)

Xylitol causes dogs’ blood sugar to drop to dangerous levels and can even lead to organ failure. Sugar-free candy, gum, toothpaste and other diet foods might contain xylitol.

Raisins and Grapes

While some fruits and veggies are fine for dogs in moderation, grapes and raisins can be extremely dangerous for dogs, and eating them can lead to kidney issues.

✨ Why Fetch is Great for Your Dog:

2. Mental Stimulation: Fetch keeps your dog’s brain sharp by engaging their natural instincts to chase, retrieve, and focus.
3. Bonding Time: Playing fetch strengthens the bond between you and your dog, making for happy, tail-wagging memories.
🎾 Fetch Tips for a Fun Day:
*Use a soft, dog-friendly ball or toy to protect your dog’s teeth.
*Keep sessions short but fun, especially if your pup is new to fetch.

Watch Out for Toxins: Fall brings out mushrooms, acorns, and other seasonal hazards that can be toxic to pets. Keep an eye on your pets during walks and outdoor playtime.

Seasonal Allergies: Fall allergens can affect pets too. If you notice excessive scratching, sneezing, or watery eyes, consult with us for allergy relief options.

🐾🖤 National Feral Cat Day - October 16th 🖤🐾
Today, we shine a spotlight on our community’s feral cats and the importance of helping these resilient and independent felines! National Feral Cat Day on October 16th is a reminder that every cat deserves care and compassion, no matter their circumstances. 🐱💙
✨ How You Can Help Feral Cats:
1. Support TNR Programs: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the most effective way to humanely manage and reduce feral cat populations. Spayed/neutered cats lead healthier lives and prevent overpopulation.
2. Provide Shelter: As colder weather approaches, consider setting up a simple outdoor shelter for feral cats in your area. A cozy, safe spot can make all the difference.
3. Offer Food and Water: Regular feeding stations can ensure that feral cats have access to nutritious food and clean water, especially in harsh weather.
4. Respect Their Space: Feral cats may not be adoptable, but they can still live happy lives in their outdoor homes. Let them remain wild while giving them the support they need.
🌟 Let’s work together to care for these misunderstood cats and raise awareness about the importance of TNR. https://nationaltoday.com/national-feral-cat-day/

Here are some ways to serve canned pumpkin to your pet:

1. You can mix one to four tablespoons of canned pumpkin into your dog's regular wet or dry food. You can also use pumpkin as a food topper by putting a spoonful on top of your dog's food.
2. You can feed your dog pumpkin straight from a spoon.
3. Stuffed into a toy
You can stuff pumpkin into a KONG toy by itself or mix it with other dog-safe fruits and freeze it overnight.
4. Frozen popsicles
You can make pumpkin popsicles by mixing pumpkin with banana and peanut butter, or just pumpkin alone, and freezing it in an ice cube tray or popsicle mold.
5. Baked treats
You can use pumpkin as a substitute for butter or other fats when baking homemade dog treats. You can also use a pumpkin cookie cutter to cut out shapes and bake them.
6. Roasted pumpkin seeds
You can roast pumpkin seeds in the oven, grind them into a powder, and sprinkle them over your dog's food.

Before serving canned pumpkin to your dog, you should check with your veterinarian and start with small amounts. Canned pumpkin with added salt, spices, sugar, or other additives can irritate your dog's stomach. You should also never use canned pumpkin pie mix, as it may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

🎃🐾 Pumpkin Perks for Your Pet! 🐾🎃
Fall is here, and pumpkins are everywhere! Did you know that pumpkin isn’t just tasty for us—it’s also a healthy treat for your pets? At VCA North Division Animal Medical Center, we want to highlight some of the amazing benefits pumpkin can offer your furry friends. 🐶🐱
✨ Health Benefits of Pumpkin for Pets:
1. Digestive Health: Pumpkin is packed with fiber, which helps regulate your pet’s digestion. It’s great for relieving constipation and diarrhea.
2. Weight Management: Low in calories but rich in nutrients, pumpkin can help pets feel full and satisfied without the extra calories.
3. Hydration: Pumpkin has a high water content, which helps keep your pet hydrated—especially helpful for pets that don’t drink enough water.
4. Rich in Nutrients: Pumpkin is loaded with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants that support your pet’s overall health, including a shiny coat and strong immune system.
🎃 How to Add Pumpkin to Your Pet’s Diet:
Use plain, cooked pumpkin (not pie filling!) and mix a spoonful into your pet’s food. Pumpkin treats are a fun seasonal snack.
🚨 Pumpkin Caution: Always make sure you're giving your pet plain, unsweetened pumpkin without any spices or additives. Too much can lead to digestive upset, so moderation is key!
Keep your pets happy and healthy this fall with a little pumpkin love! 🎃🐾
