Temperament tested a litter of nine Great Dane puppies from Cable Creek Danes yesterday. They then had a good romp with the shepherds in the front yard. There are still cuties from this litter on the hunt for new addresses. Message Cable Creek.
Temperament testing for litters is a service Nine Realms offers for whole litters or single pups in a litter. Testing is important to determine pups suited for various areas of work and should be done before folks select their new working partner for any type of work.
Tracking with the Grumeti Fund K9 Unit the last two weeks.
Practicing patrolling for poaches with the handlers this morning along the Rubana River drainage.
The Grumeti K9 team has been working since September 2017. The dogs have all been on odor since then and have been consistently worked and maintained.
The method the handlers and dogs learned for odor imprinting was simultaneous conditioning or pairing (odor with toy). As there are many other methods out there that offer pros and cons, I wanted the handlers to learn about them on this trip. One never knows where life may take you and the more information I can impart to them on methods and knowledge the better off they all will be! Always learning, always trying new methods, always growing.
DJ here is happy to participate in a new method of imprinting (even if he knows odor). Radar absolutely refused to participate in this activity and just sat looking at odor until he was paid. Enjoy our bush scent box and odor tin.
Itâs been a busy couple days with the Grumeti Fund K9 Unit. The afternoons have been very hot, building to a big thunderstorm that hit this afternoon right as the team dropped out to work proximity alerts.
The handlers were tasked with reading their dogâs proximity alert to human odor without the presence of a track. Having been tracking behind their dogs for 7yrs now, on countless live tracks, they all have an excellent ability to read their dogâs proximity alerts at distance. This method is just another training tool the handlers can add to their box for continued growth and future dogs. I pulled this method from the hard surface tracking seminar I attended with Dirty Bandana Working Dogs.
I was expecting DJ and handler Sareta to struggle with this as the rain started dumping right as we began the work. Sareta, being the absolute professional he is, and with 7yrs of tracking experience for DJ, they nailed the exercise. You can see the sharp turn to the left at the end when DJ comes into odor, followed by the handlerâs signaling to the other handlers hiding that the dog had their odor. The handlers hiding then get up and run, reward for the dog for showing the proximity alert. This then leads to stronger and stronger alerts over time.
Yesterdayâs training areas included some great guests. A pride of ten lions. They were there for our morning and afternoon article search and tracking.
Mr. Tony stretching his legs. Tony has come to the age of retirement at roughly 9.5yrs (heâs a rescue so this is approximate). However, he still gets to join along to ensure he does not feel left out or develop caged mind. While not being one of the trackers, Tonyâs fan club from all the guests and employees throughout the years is probably larger than the other three dogs combined. He certainly has a winning personality!
A highly polluted handler laid track for Shenzi. Iâve included some text in the video to highlight some of the obstacles tackled on the track. 30min age, 1/3mile, one article at the end, 25degrees out, numerous cross tracks and distractions.
Handler laid, in muzzle tracking for Shenzi. This is a skill that is handy to have at the ready and since Shenzi is an excellent tracker and has been muzzle conditioned and comfortable in a muzzle for a long time, it was time to put the two together. In typical Shenzi fashion, she missed the ball because she was so focused on the track itself, gave a negative, and then kept trying to find the track again.
A glimpse into some of the training currently going on at Nine Realms. With the sun out this past week the board and train dogs Logan and Yogi have been getting lots of practice in on recall on our hikes in the burned out woods behind the property. Narsil, Anduril, and Ronan come along as well and have a lot of fun.
Ronan and Logan wear muzzles for safety as both have been either dog reactive or sometimes just an a$$ (RonanâŠ) around other dogs. Surprisingly though both Ronan and Logan love playing with Anduril.
As always, Narsil is free to do just about whatever she likes. She is the Queen.
Night Tracking with Shenzi.
45min age, quarter mile, through the burned out portions of my property. We flushed a flock of quail as we went through the wetland grass. Right into my face and Shenzi kept on cruising, no recognition. I donât usually track with a headlamp at night but it was overcast and with the number of holes from burnt trees, I figured it was needed and good experience for Shenzi.
Tracking with Logan, six months. Dual purpose patrol K9 in training.
