Meet Gia 🐈☘️

Gia is a gorgeous split-face tortoiseshell kitty. She came to us as a stray, but we believe she is around 2 years of age. She is spayed, vaccinated and ready to bring love to your home. She is extremely sweet and loves attention. Her markings are unique and make her stand out. When it comes to other cats Gia does hiss but she should warm up to them after some time of being in the same environment. We do not know how she reacts to dogs so she would most likely do best in home with no dogs. Gia is absolutely stunning and ready to bring some beauty to your life. If you are interested in Gia please fill out an adoption application online at www.wcahs.com, visit during our open hours, or call (715)635-4720 to set up an appointment.

He's a gorgeous and sweet boy who needs extra encouragement to come out of his shell. Loki's stunning yellow eyes alone will make you fall in love.

If you are interested in Loki please fill out an adoption application online at www.wcahs.com, visit during our open hours, or call (715)635-4720 to set up an appointment.

He is 10 weeks old, neutered, vaccinated, and ready for his forever home. Meet Storm ☘️🐕

Storm is an energetic, 3 year old, medium sized female dog who would benefit from some training and having a job to keep her busy. Being a Blue Heeler mix Storm requires lots of exercise. Her breeding is that from the working dog family. She needs a lot stimulation and a place to run off her energy. She loves belly rubs and will sit when you tell her to. She is very treat motivated and would do great in a family with kids. After running off some energy Storm loves to lay beside you and relax. She is a very loyal dog. She needs proper introductions with cats but she does not like other dogs. She needs to be the only dog in the home.

If you are interested in Storm, please fill out an adoption application online at www.wcahs.com, visit during our open hours, or call (715)635-4720 to set up an appointment.

Meet Bjorn ☘️ 🐈

Bjorn is one of four kittens that were found outside in a box in the snow, left to fend for themselves. As the others become available, they will be posted. But let us tell you, none of these kittens hold it against other humans. They are very loving and playful and love being around other playful cats, inside with warmth and food.

At just 10 weeks old, Bjorn is ready to find his new home! He is fully vaccinated, neutered, and ready to go. He is a beautiful short hair tabby with gorgeous eyes and a matching personality. The second he sees you, he is purring away and ready to play. A great boy to teach and grow with.

If you are looking for your next companion, Bjorn is it. We can send blankets, kitten food, and toys along with him to his new forever home.

If you are interested in Bjorn, please fill out an adoption application online at www.wcahs.com, visit during our open hours, or call (715)635-4720 to set up an appointment.

Spotlight Saturday: The Healing Power of Animal Companionship

For centuries, animals have provided humans with more than just companionship—they have offered healing, comfort, and unconditional love. The bond between humans and animals is profound, and many people find that their pets play a crucial role in helping them navigate life's challenges, including trauma and loss. Whether it's a dog, cat, or another beloved pet, animal companionship can offer emotional, psychological, and even physical benefits that promote healing and resilience.

1. Emotional Support and Comfort

One of the most immediate benefits of having a pet during times of hardship is their ability to provide comfort and emotional support.

Pets have an intuitive ability to sense their owners’ emotions and offer gentle companionship when it's needed most.

The simple act of petting an animal can reduce stress and promote a sense of calm, releasing endorphins and lowering cortisol levels.

Unlike humans, pets do not judge, allowing their owners to express emotions freely without fear of rejection or misunderstanding.

For individuals grieving the loss of a loved one or coping with trauma, a pet’s presence can help fill the void and provide much-needed stability.

2. Reducing Anxiety and Depression

Numerous studies have shown that animal companionship can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Interacting with pets increases levels of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters responsible for happiness and relaxation.

Routine pet care—such as feeding, walking, and grooming—provides a sense of purpose and structure, which is especially beneficial for those struggling with mental health challenges.

The unconditional love and affection from a pet can help counter feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Many therapists and mental health professionals even recommend Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) to individuals with PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression as part of their treatment plans.

3. Encouraging Physical Activity and Healthy Habits

For pet owners, particularly those with dogs, the responsibility of pet care promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Daily walks, playtime, and outdoor activities with pets encourage physical movement, which can boost overall well-being.

Exercise releases endorphins that help combat stress and depressive symptoms.

The need for routine (feeding schedules, bathroom breaks, exercise) instills discipline and consistency, which can be beneficial for those recovering from trauma.

Being active with a pet fosters a deeper connection and strengthens the human-animal bond, further reinforcing emotional healing.

4. Strengthening Social Connections

One of the overlooked benefits of pet ownership is its ability to enhance social interactions.

Walking a dog or visiting a pet-friendly park can lead to spontaneous conversations with fellow pet owners, reducing feelings of isolation.

Therapy animals are often used in hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers to facilitate communication and connection among patients and staff.

Pets can serve as a bridge for individuals who struggle with social anxiety, making it easier to engage in meaningful interactions with others.

For people who have suffered loss or trauma, the social support that comes from pet-related interactions can be immensely healing.

5. Providing a Sense of Security

Many pet owners feel safer and more secure with their animals by their side.

Dogs, in particular, can provide protection, which can be reassuring for individuals recovering from traumatic experiences such as abuse or assault.

Even small pets, such as cats or rabbits, can create a comforting home environment that feels warm and safe.

The presence of a pet at night can ease anxiety and provide reassurance during moments of distress.

The sense of security pets provide can be a critical factor in rebuilding confidence and trust after experiencing trauma.

6. Assisting with Grief and Loss

Losing a loved one is one of the most challenging experiences in life, and pets can play an essential role in the grieving process.

The daily routine of caring for a pet provides structure and prevents individuals from becoming lost in their grief.

Pets can serve as a reminder that love and companionship continue to exist, even in times of loss.

Many grieving individuals find solace in talking to their pets, expressing emotions that might be difficult to share with others.

By offering companionship and emotional support, pets help ease the loneliness and sadness that often accompany loss.

Final Thoughts

The healing power of animal companionship is undeniable. Pets provide unwavering support, encourage physical and mental well-being, and offer comfort in ways that human relationships sometimes cannot. Whether you're facing trauma, loss, or emotional struggles, the love of a pet can be a guiding light toward healing and resilience.

If you or someone you know is struggling, consider the profound benefits of adopting or fostering a pet. Not only will you be giving an animal a loving home, but you may also find that they become your greatest source of healing and joy.

Our Story

History of the WCAHS Washburn County Area Humane Society (WCAHS)

The Washburn County Area Humane Society (WCAHS) was established in March 1994 and incorporated in 1995 as a 501(c)(3) private, non-profit corporation. In 2000, the shelter located at 1400 Cottonwood Ave. was officially opened. It was constructed as a result of the fund raising efforts of many volunteers with the 1.21 acres of land given as a gift by the city of Spooner. In March 2017, our shelter was destroyed by a fire. We purchased a building at 1300 Roundhouse Road, remodeled it, and moved to the new shelter in July 2018.

WCAHS is the official pound for stray animals in Washburn County but also provides shelter on an average to hundreds of homeless animals annually.
