THROWBACK THURSDAY!!!Sharing this wonderful post from the AKC Library & Archives:

"While we often sing the praises of renowned judge, dog writer, and handler Anne Rogers Clark, we are equally smitten with her glamorous pioneering mother, Olga Hone Rogers. As the founder of Surrey Kennels, Olga instilled Anne with her penchant for Poodles (and English Cockers). In 1931, after Olga criticized Abercrombie & Fitch for its handling of the sale of one of her dogs, they hired her as the head of its purebred dog department, which she steered for six years toward being a center of stylish dog clipping and goods sold. Later, as a result of financial hardship due to the stock-market crash, Olga opened a grooming business in uptown Manhattan called Dogs, Inc., where young Annie learned the ropes."

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Thanks to Poodle Variety magazine.

“Two big boxes of photographs to add to the archives just arrived - I opened one box and this is the first thing I see. (this won’t mean a lot to some of you, but it’s going to just kill us old hands) Mrs. Annie Clark judging in California giving an award to Standard Poodle “Bel Tor Hugues Capet” bred by Rebeca (Becky) Mason of Bel Tor poodle fame. Amazingly, in this picture the dog is handled by non other than Mr. Tom Stevenson. It’s such a snap back it’s made me smile all day long, so I had to share it with all of you. Photograph by the iconic Joan Ludwig. Color me amazed.”

In researching images and stories I happen to come across some remarkable images and here is another one I came across and found it very endearing... such a small little dog.

The photograph, taken on the 19th of April, 1945, is of United States Army Private First Class Raymond Gasiorowski, taking Leipzig, his company's pet puppy, for a walk in Leipzig, Germany.

Many military units in WW2 adopted animal mascots.
Individual soldiers also had their own pets and many were local animals left homeless by the war.

For the cat, bird, or dog, it meant survival being in the care of a soldier. For the soldier, a pet meant companionship and comfort in the brutality of war.

Lest We Forget.

Photograph and information came from the US National Archives.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Thanks to the AKC Gazette!

Wow! What a Lineup!
Poodle Club of Massachusetts, 1958: A memorable lineup of Poodle power representing the three varieties: Robert Gorman with 1958 Westminster BIS, Standard Ch. Puttencove Promise, one of the breed’s all-time greats and an influential stud; Anne Hone Rogers with Miniature Ch. Fontclair Festoon, who’d go on to take BIS at the Garden in 1959 (the second of three Westminster winners handled by Annie); and Wendell Sammet with Toy Int. Ch. Silhou-Jette’s Snow Sprite, one of a long line of top winners out of Martha Jane Ablett’s Silhou-Jette Kennels.

It must have been a tough call for judge Tom Stevenson, who put up Festoon as his Best of Breed. (Evelyn Shafer photo)
