Parvo, short for canine parvovirus, is a highly contagious viral disease primarily affecting puppies and young dogs. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, mainly targeting the intestines, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Parvo can survive in the environment for months, making it easy for puppies to contract the virus. Understanding the virus and its transmission to protect your furry friend is crucial.

Happening next week! 💕 Get those babies vaccinated!

One week until our 2nd Annual Dog Vaccine and Licensing Clinic!

Below are answers to questions, as well some educational information about vaccines and parvovirus in dogs.

Elko Veterinary Clinic (EVC) recommends that puppies be vaccinated every 3 weeks from 8 - 20 weeks of age. Bordetella is typically completed at 11-12 weeks of age. Rabies is typically completed at 16-17 weeks of age.
This is dependent on several factors and is subject to change at veterinarian discretion.

After the initial vaccine series is completed at 20 weeks, all 3 vaccines are recommended to be completed a year later. Rabies and DHPP is then done on a 3 year schedule. Bordetella is continued to be done yearly.

Parvovirus is transmitted by fecal-oral transmission. The virus can survive severe adverse conditions such as snow, ice, and otherwise freezing temperatures. Parvovirus can survive in the environment for a year. Humans and other animals can track parvovirus into the home or property on their shoes and paws. It is impossible to prevent parvovirus, except by properly vaccinating your dog and taking the proper precautions to lessen the chances of infection until they are fully vaccinated at approximately 20 weeks of age.

If your dog is not fully vaccinated, no matter the age, please carry them and do not allow them to socialize.
EVC is not liable for any dog that contracts parvovirus as a result of attending this vaccine clinic.

1. How old does my dog have to be to attend?
Dog must have a MINIMUM of one DHPP vaccine done by a veterinarian. Records must be provided by non clients.
If your dog does not meet this requirement, you will be turned away.

2. How old does my dog have to be to obtain a Rabies vaccine?
Dogs as young as 12 weeks of age can receive a Rabies vaccine.
The County/City will be issuing dog licenses at this event as well.

3. Do I have to be a client to attend?
No. It is ok if you do not have records in hand for adult dogs, but only 1 year vaccines will be issued until proof of vaccination is provided at a later date. If you would like an accurate rabies certificate/vaccine timeline at time of service, vaccine records should be provided by non clients.

4. What if I forget my ID for free vaccine services? How does my ID extend to family?
A valid ID must be presented at the time of the vaccine clinic to receive free vaccines or they must be paid for.
Veteran’s and Senior’s spouses and legal children under 18 are the only people who can receive free vaccines when present with person with valid ID.

5. Does my dog have to be leashed?
Dogs MUST be leashed. The vaccine clinic is taking place outside next to the highway with many dogs present.

6. Should I allow my dog to greet other dogs or pet another dog?
Unless it is mutually agreed to by owners to allow dog-to-dog greetings or to otherwise pet another dog, it is advised to keep distance between pets and owners.
It is a new environment and dogs may not act as they typically do at home.

EVC/Community Cares Foundation, City of Elko Animal Shelter, LASSO, Elko County Clerks, the County Animal Control Officer, Endless Pawsibilites Foundation, and Yum Yum Healthy Pet Treats will all be in attendance.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Well we made it through our first Summer! Whew! 😅😎 We have learned a lot and are so thankful for our wonderful customers for their patience and kindness. We appreciate your grace as we learn and grow in this business, my employees and I can’t thank you enough!

I also want to thank a few other people who have helped make our dream a success. Sharon Bachman, thank you for all of the training lunches, words of encouragement and for always being there for my many questions. Thank you to RNDC for providing us the funding, our barn updates would have taken us years without it. Thank you to A&G Irrigation and Precision Fencing for doing the barn updates and fence, they look amazing. And, most importantly, to all of my family for the endless words of encouragement and of course for the hard work hanging and installing rubber floors, equipment, gates, security systems, painting and everything else! I couldn’t have done any of this without you all!

We are booking for fall and the Holidays are almost full so please reach out if you want to get on our books!!

Enjoy some pictures of our process getting ready to open and a few of our sweet clients from the summer 😊 🐶🐾🦴

Clients, Friends, and Family: I first off want to start this post with a huge THANK YOU! Without you, my little business would be nothing. As bittersweet as it is, we have decided it’s time for me to focus solely on the kennel as we are getting so close to opening!! More to come on that real SOON!!! Therefore, from this point forward, I won’t be scheduling any new pet-sitting appointments. If you already have an appointment scheduled, I will honor those commitments. Also, if you have a discount applied to your account, I will still honor that either via pet sitting or through the kennel.

I have put together a list of recommended pet sitters from around the community (with their approval) for those of you that need it!

Stay tuned to my website (gbknevada.com) and social media for updates on the kennel! If you have any questions, please let me know!
