Let’s talk drive vs arousal. I love a podcast by @Puredogtalk where she interviewed @DeniseFenzi and they talked the difference between drive and arousal. Drive is ‘the desire and focus to accomplish a goal’ that goal could be chasing a ball, finding the bird, finding a rat, herding sheep or cattle, finishing the agility course etc. Where arousal is movement, usually for the sake of movement. It is being 'up' but doesn't necessarily have to have a focus.
High arousal dogs without somewhere to channel that energy are the dogs that end up with issues. They can’t sit still even if they should. They are whining, pacing, and destructive without somewhere to channel that energy.
I believe bird dogs need quite a bit of both. They need to love to run because they may be running 5,10,15 miles before their idiot handler actually finds and puts them on some birds (that’s me, I’m the idiot who sucks at finding birds) but they also have to have the drive and focus to stand still pointing a bird for 5,10,20 minutes while their handler huffs and puffs up the mountain to reach them on point.
So when you are looking at dogs for breeding or selecting for your breeding program. You must find the dog with the correct balance of drive and arousal that fits your lifestyle and your goals. And yes, she did hike 20 miles yesterday but she is very high arousal and so we have to find it an outlet every day even when we dont want to.

Day two of the Utah NSTRA Trial in the bag. Very tough conditions today. It started with fog and snow and ended with sleet and rain. She was soaked to the bone each brace.
She had essentially two finds in each brace and performed beautifully. Her first find of the day had her locked on point less than three feet from the bird while her brace mate circled her twice before sharing the point, then proceeded to creep on her bird all while the handler was trying to reach his dog. With all that she stood solid! The bird flushed right up and into her face and she snatched it. Beautiful work for such a young dog! We found a few things to work on over the next few months but very excited for this next spring!!

Day one of the frozen toes Utah NSTRA trial is complete. She did great for her second time on the field. She got only one find in field A and technically 3 finds in field B. Weather was very unpredictable with a lot snow and wind at times. The birds were also running! Not a lot of finds but great scores on the ones she had and nice obedience and ground cover. It’s official, Millie is now nationally ranked at number 11 for FCAT!! Utah sighthounds Club stepped it up this fall after the disastrous spring runs. Thank you for the great time. Also thank you Blackstone Photography for these great shots of Millie absolutely flying and her intensity and drive to GET IT! After her runs in Boise last month she ran her fastest time ever at just over 7 seconds! Also, if you’re worried that she will chase rabbits in the field, she won’t, she knows the difference between a bag on a string in some orange fence that she is allowed to chase and the fuzzy creatures out and about that she is not allowed to chase.
