This is one of the best pictures I've gotten of Toasty showcasing her eyes.

Her left eye is normal aside from the starburst pupil. Her right eye has slight microphthalmia (small pupil) and corectopia (subluxed or "dropped" pupil), as well as starburst pupil.

Starburst means that the outlines of her pupils aren't clearly defined and instead look kind of like they've burst.

Her vision isn't affected, which is fantastic, and her eyes are very healthy given her situation.

Toasty's color and eyes are due to double merle breeding. Merle is the coat that most people seem to want in Australian shepherds. People who either don't know any better or don't care, or by accident, breed two merles together which can result in eye and war deformities for the puppies. Merle deletes pigment, which is what makes their coats look the way they do. When that pigment is deleted behind the eyes or in the inner ear, the dog is deaf or has hearing loss on some level, and they can be blind and have no eyes. Toasty obviously has eyes, although they are poorly formed.

You can see a lot of communication between the two happening here. Toasty indicates when she wants to play and when she's done. Sandwich is, of course, always ready to go. 😂

Toasty did a great job with her muzzle training and got to the point I was confident she could play with Sandwich without injuring him. She now loves him and seeks to play with him regularly. She still has barrier reactivity that we're working on, but at least all 3 dogs can comfortably play now... If all 3 want to. Looking at you, Grandpa Chicken 😂
