Happy hump day! We hope your week is zooming by with no worries just like our buddy here 💨
We are filled with a mix of sadness and overwhelming happiness as we say goodbye to Lex this afternoon. He is starting his new adventure at his forever home. Lex has spent a month and a half with us as he recovered from a significant trauma. During that time, he transformed from a terrified kitten to a staple of joy and entertainment here at the clinic. While we will miss him dearly, we are excited to see him flourish in his new home. 💕
When you need a little extra reassurance that everything is going to go okay with your dental cleaning. 💕 Millie is one of Dr. Ray’s favorite patients and had extra cuddles before her dental procedure this morning.
Murdoch sat back and relaxed while receiving lots of pets during his nail trim this morning 🐾
Do you know why we recommend pre-visit medications for some pets? In most cases, it isn’t because you have a ‘bad’ pet. It’s because you have a nervous or stressed pet, and we can make that better!
Unfortunately, no matter how positive we try to make your baby’s visit, we still have to do some weird or uncomfortable things (holding them in ways they aren’t used to being held, administering vaccines or other treatments, collecting lab samples, etc). Aside from that, throw in the weird smells, noises, other animals, or that car ride they hate, and we have a lot working against us.
Our team works hard each day to try to make visits as low stress or fear free as possible. We talk in soft tones or with high pitched baby voices, we offer lots of treats, we even approach and have primary touch points that are aimed at being as least threatening as possible. All while paying close attention to body language consistent with fear, anxiety, or stress.
Without intervention, stress tends to worsen each visit and can eventually lead to more severe anxiety or fear aggression.
Nemo had her anxiety medication last night and this morning. Her signs of anxiety are her vocalization, flicking tail, and ears pointed slightly outward. She still keeps the rest of her body relatively relaxed while focusing on her treat, and we were able to complete our exam to get her back to feeling her best. During her exam, we also talked about ways to decrease her stress even further for future appointments.
If you ever wonder what goes on in our treatment area, here’s a great example. 🐶
