Apollo is almost completely blind. We believe he can see some light and shadow, but not much. He lives in our bedroom now. Being out with the other cats is too intimidating for him. He will literally feel his way around if he is not sure of something - reaching out with a paw to touch and tap before he walks forward.

🎉 Exciting News from Copper's Cat Commune! 🎉

After many months of hard work, delays, and a few bumps along the way (thanks, weather, sick contractors, and life), we’re thrilled to announce that Sparky's Greenhouse enclosure is officially complete! 🐱🌿

This new and improved space is home to "Marilyn’s Ferals," a special group of cats we hold dear in honor of their original caregiver. We’re confident that the new wood and wire build will stand up better against falling branches, which the old Purrfect Fence just couldn't withstand after many storm seasons. While we loved the Purrfect Fence, it was time for an upgrade!

A huge thank you to Alexis, Leo, and Jonathan for all their hard work making this dream a reality! 🙌 This new enclosure is much larger, giving the cats so much more space to roam and explore. The auction we held last year made this possible, and we couldn't be more grateful for your support!

Anna came to the Commune from a feral colony TNR project covered in mange. Because she is feral she was kept confined while undergoing treatment and healing from her skin infection. The plan was initially to return to her feral colony but shortly after her arrival in 2023 Matt was hospitalized and the shelter was in full emergency mode. In the weeks that followed Anna became acclimated to indoor life at the Commune and remains as a permanent resident. Though she is still feral she allows humans close, knowing how they have helped her feel better.

3D is the mama of the *only* litter of kittens ever born here at the Commune to date. She was found already pregnant in a parking lot in south Houston right after we moved here in 2011 and before we had any connections in the area. With the move and all she ended up too far along for me to be ok with a pregnant spay, so we let her have her kittens. She had 5 – one solid white at birth, one grey and white, and 3 black. Only 2 remain at this point - the others have all passed on. 3D got her name because Matt has had 2 previous black cats named Dave – the first was even female. The second was male and Matt called him Davus Secundus. This girl became Davus Tertius, or 3D. She is a tiny girl, weighing in at about 7 pounds. She loves to have her tummy rubbed and loves to be outside. She has a squeaky little voice and demands that Matt pet her quite often. She is of course fixed now, as are all her children.

Wakko is one of the only litter ever born here at the Commune. Born to mama 3D – along with sister Dot and brother Yakko (RIP) (named along with Wakko for the Warner siblings) and brothers Gandalf (RIP) and Yeti (RIP). Wakko, Yakko, and Dot are/were all solid black, and with us being in a new city with no connections at the time, we decided not to fight the fight of getting them adopted. Wakko only likes to be petted when he is above the person petting him. He is happy and healthy, even if a little under-socialized.

This cutie pie is Waffles! Waffles used to live primarily in the main enclosure, rarely coming inside at all. That has changed recently. He has moved into the kitchen where he loves to talk to all of us by hissing. Not in any sort of warning, just as a form of chatting! It's really pretty funny! He is a sweet boy who loves all the affection he gets no that he has moved indoors.

This is Vex, named after my favorite character in . Critical Role is a live Dungeons and Dragons show. There is also an animated series on Amazon Prime. (Yes I am a proud D&D geek!) Vex is a personal pet, as opposed to a Commune cat. She is very attached to me (Mimi), and loves to give me hugs when I stand near the bed - standing up on her hind legs and reaching up to grab me! She also has a primordial pouch that is just a huge pocket of skin! It doesn't have any fat content at all. It's really very odd. She is a super affectionate girl, and has this adorable tiny, squeaky meow!

Trooper was a feral boy when he came to us. He had been attacked by a dog and ended up in the caring hands of . The stitched up his face but did not want to return him to his previous territory. They reached out to us to give him a safe home where he could be himself. He has come to understand that people can be pretty cool. We bring him food and pets. He is not one to demand attention, but he accepts it when it is offered.

Trill came to us from the in CA. She has megacolon and cannot always control her bladder or bowels. She is on medication for megacolon, but even with the medication, she occasionally gets backed up. This requires a trip to the vet and sedation in order to "clean her out." She is a silly girl, with high-stepping back legs and little turned-out front feet. She is super friendly and just loves attention, niblling on you while you pet her.

In 2024 the Commune was contacted by an gentleman to secure housing for his aging cat. As he could no longer care for Teresa he was concerned about finding her a home that understood spicy felines. While she has no major health concerns Teresa is not very social and prefers limited contact with humans. At the Commune she’s allowed to be her spicy self for the remainder of her days. She lives a low-profile life and is difficult to photograph.

Tater was released to the clinic where Mimi works after being found roaming the streets as a declawed cat. The Commune was the perfect soft landing for Tater as he suffers from stomatitis. As a result of the stomatitis he has had all of his teeth extracted. His mouth continually flares up making his mouth painful, so he is not the best groomer but we love him even when he needs a little extra clean up.

We are so thankful for all of you!

Millie stealing water from Hiccup's cage. It's not as if there isn't fresh water on the floor about 2 feet away! (All of our paraplegics are loose during the day but sleep in cages at night)

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Beryl has done some damage here at the Commune. All cats are safe at the moment, but a large pecan tree broke and the whole top half fell into our yard. It took out part of our privacy fence and crushed a section of Purrfect Fence in our main enclosure. There are 2 cats currently outside in that enclosure who refuse to come indoors. They are hanging out in the gazebo. There is nothing we can do at the moment since the second half of Beryl is about to hit with torrential rain forecast. We also have no power. Our generator is slated to be delivered on Thursday. At least we will have it for the next storm. Keep the cats in your thoughts as we head into round 2.
