Yesterday was the end of an era here at the Commune. We had to say goodbye to Autumn, one of our personal cats. Autumn was almost 20 years old, and over the past few days she let us know that she was done. She fell asleep and passed surrounded by loving arms and hearts.
Autumn came to us when she was only 3 weeks old. Her momma had abandoned her - we believe due to illness. Autumn was a tiny kitten for her age, and had eyes matted shut with drainage. She was quite sick, but had a true fighting heart. She never would take a bottle, so we syringe-fed her every 3 hours until she started eating on her own. She was feeling better in just a couple of days, thank goodness, but the syringe feeding continued for more than a week. She was a spunky kitten, silly and playful. She bossed everyone around, including us and the dogs.
Autumn never grew to be a normal-sized cat. She was always tiny - weighing about 6 pounds at the most. She was very bonded with Matt, and followed him everywhere. She loved sitting on his shoulder and would jump up there to supervise whenever he was cooking.
As she aged, Autumn decided to move into the kitchen full-time, rather than sleep upstairs where the a/c blows much colder. She was a tough little girl, though. She was never really sick again, but she did survive going through the dryer at one point - every cat owner's worst nightmare come true.
Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things we have had to do since we lost Aries. She was the last of the 22 cats that moved with us from Dallas to Houston in 2011. We have suffered so many losses over the years, but some just hit you harder.
Sleep well, tiny girl. You were so loved. Go snuggle with Spencer and boop Kissell on the nose. Give Aries my love. We will meet again over the bridge.

Riker's eye is all better! Now this boy has injured himself, though. He almost fell from the cat tree the other day but caught himself. He's been limping ever since. We have given it a few days on pain meds to see if it would resolve. It hasn't. He will be going to the clinic with me on Monday for x-rays. Please keep him in your thoughts.
