Lost Dog Recovery: Why Patience & a Calm Approach Matter

We recently had a success story with a lost dog, thanks to the calm approach taken by her owner, guided by careful instructions. This sweet girl was scared and wary after getting out on Halloween, and being a more nervous dog around people. Many well-meaning people tried to help by driving around and searching for her, or seeing her and trying to follow her, which only caused her to run and hide even more. With lost dogs, especially those that are fearful, it’s crucial to avoid pursuing or trying to locate them directly. These actions can unintentionally push them into unsafe areas or make them too frightened to approach anyone. Here’s how the owner managed to bring her home safely with a low-stress approach:

🌸 Get Low & Stay Calm
When the dog was spotted lying in someone’s yard, the owner didn’t rush or call her name. Instead, she stayed low, laying down in the dog’s line of sight at a safe distance, avoiding eye contact, and using calm body language.

🧴 Use Familiar Scents & Favorites
She offered familiar items – the dog’s ball, a frisbee, and even a bit of tuna to lure her in gently. These comforting scents and tastes helped the dog recognize her, reducing fear and building trust.

🌿 What "Do Not Chase" Really Means
When we say "do not chase," this doesn’t just mean physically running after the dog. Even by your presence alone, if the dog feels threatened and moves, you’re effectively "chasing" them. Remember, a dog’s hearing and vision are far sharper than ours—they will notice you long before you see them. Simply driving around or searching the area can make them anxious enough to flee, so avoid this approach whenever possible. Searching is generally not advisable in most lost dog situations.

🍂 Wait for the Dog to Approach
The owner patiently allowed the dog to come closer, letting her sniff and eat from her hand before making any move to touch her. This trust-building step was essential. Once the dog felt safe, she stayed close and didn’t want to be put down again.

Lesson: If you see a lost dog, resist the urge to chase, corner, or call out to the dog. These actions, although well-intentioned, often backfire, pushing dogs into hiding or even dangerous situations like busy roads. Instead, remain calm, use food and familiar items, and let the dog come to you. If they retreat, you must also retreat. Pursuing from this point is the biggest mistake any owner makes in trying to recover their scared dog on the run. It's important to leave them food, but then you must leave the area and seek professional help from someone who can trap your pup for you.

If you ever find yourself in this situation, contact ERC and we can guide you in the right direction or step in to help to trap your dog and get them back home to you safely, and with as minimal stress to them as possible.

ERC is a federally recognized 501c3 public charity and we rely on the support of our community. We do not require any sort of donation from the people we help, and do not ask for anything in return for helping bring their dog home. Many do donate after their dog is back home, which is greatly appreciated, but many cannot and those dogs still need our help too. We would love to have your support monthly or as a one time donation to help offset the costs to help these dogs get back home too. Our fuel cost is our biggest expense, and our high value foods that we use are the next biggest expense. We always offer to pay for the foods that those helping us to recover a dog buy to put out for the dog were working to catch, but we need help to be able to continue to offer this. Thank you to all our supporters and future supporters!

Ghost Dog is Safe – We Did It! 🐾

Thanks to the incredible support from this community, Ghost Dog is finally safe! Your kind words, shares, and donations made this 6-hour round trip possible, and I’m forever grateful. This wouldn’t have happened without you! 💙

A huge shoutout to Harberbarger for sending me his post initially, and to Mary Young for being his "forever advocate". Mary was not only his voice, by making the post to find him the help he needed, but she also stepped up to help me with the trapping and was the perfect feeder who followed all the steps to make this rescue successful. Thanks also to Josh and Lisa Frank, the campground staff, who kept campers from interacting with Ghost so we could bring him to safety.

And when we needed a rescue, Rescue One stepped up to the plate and said they would take him in. If you aren't following their page, please do, they are a great organization that helps so many animals. And last but not least a big thanks to Rusty's Rescue Pets who offered to sponsor Ghost's vetting and grooming! If you're not already following these 2 amazing organizations, please do. They both do so much good and help so many animals in this area. Truly blessed to have them here.

The journey wasn’t easy. Ghost was so scared when we caught him, freezing in fear, unable to move, his back leg mid-step. It broke my heart, but I knew that soon he’d feel love and security. After a short stay at my house overnight and through the next evening, he slowly started to trust—and he let me get all the stickers off of him! After that, he decided that he kind of liked me, and kind of wanted to stay next to me wherever I went.

The photos of him in the house were taken right after I finished brushing him, isn't he gorgeous? And so photogenic, too! 😍

The other photos are from the trap cam the night we caught him.

If Ghost Dog’s story touched your heart, please consider becoming a monthly supporter of ERC. We rely solely on donations to help dogs like him get off the streets and into loving homes or back to their families. We do not charge for our services, no matter the distance, time, or energy spent to help a dog in need, and we are so grateful to those that help us help them each month.

UPDATE on "Ghost Dog":

Thank you to those who donated! I'm heading to Davisville, MO to set the trap for Ghost dog. This is a 3-hour trip, one way, to get to where he is, so I'm prepared for a long night ahead of me watching the trap.

If I have a chance to go live, I may do that whenever I get there I'm just not sure how the reception is going to be on site so I can't say for sure.

A new family visiting the campground suggested that his name be Yogi because he likes to steal blankets and other items from the campers, like Yogi The Bear and his pic-i-nic baskets, what do you guys think?

UPDATE: We have a rescue commitment!!! This boy will be taken in by Rescue One once he is caught! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I will keep everyone updated, now that we have rescue commitment , we can set a trap as soon as the feeding station is set up properly in order to trap this pup. cut should be getting a trap there in the next few days. ERC STILL NEEDS TO RAISE THE FUNDS NEEDED TO DO THIS REACUE, PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN SO WE CAN HELP THIS DOG AND GET HIM TO RESCUE ONE ASAP!

Urgent Plea for Help - Rescue and Donations Needed for "Ghost Dog" Before It's Too Late

Time is running out for a beautiful soul that is known as "Ghost Dog," a sweet but scared pup who has been surviving alone at a campground in Davisville, MO, since June. With the campground closing on October 28th, WE DESPERATELY NEED TO GET HIM SOMEWHERE SAFE BEFORE THAT DATE! After Oct. 28th, no one will have access to the premises any longer and he will no longer be able to be fed daily, essentially sealing his fate for him more than likely.

Ghost Dog was likely abandoned or left behind and has been surviving thanks to the kindness of a couple who have been feeding him. But he remains wary of people and won't let anyone approach him.

ERC was contacted today and we were asked for help to trap him and we want to help him, but we need somewhere for him to go after he's caught. Without a safe place for him to go, our hands are tied, and Ghost Dog's future looks uncertain. PLEASE HELP HIM HAVE HIS CHANCE IN LIFE!!

In addition to finding him a rescue, ERC is also in need of donations to cover the costs of trapping and recovery, For those that know us, you know we pour or hearts and souls out to save these pups, for those that don't, take a look around and see some of the recoveries we've been a part and see the positive influence your donations will be contributing to. Every effort takes resources, including equipment, travel, and time, and we can't do this without community support. We want to get Ghost Dog to safety, but we need help with the expenses involved in doing so.

I know that this case seems like an impossible one, but I have to do everything I can to help this dog, and I hope you feel the same and will help by sharing this post, tagging rescuers, and donating if you are able to do so. I have seen this community come together and find placement for dogs in dire need before, and I know that if we all do what we can, we can get this guy somewhere safe before its too late!

$250 pledge is already secured for the rescue willing to step up and take this pup in once he is caught. This is for the rescue that will be providing his care going further after capture, to help offset some of the costs of his vetting, but ERC still needs donations for the trapping efforts. Even the smallest donation could make all the difference in bringing this pup to safety before it's too late.

He has endured so much, and this winter could be his breaking point. He needs to know that people can be kind, that there’s a warm place for him to heal, and that his story doesn’t end in loneliness and hunger.

Please, we’re out of time—help us save him before the park closes. If your rescue can help, or if you can donate towards the expenses for his trapping, contact us immediately. Let’s get Ghost Dog off the streets and into loving arms. I will transport him to you myself, and any donations received above the cost to trap him from this post I will gladly also give to the rescue that takes him in.

Look at this gorgeous girl! Isn't she stunning?! She’s been roaming the east side of Springfield for quite some time, skillfully avoiding anyone who tried to approach her. We received numerous sightings of her along Highway D and East Division. We believe she was mostly traveling through Pearson Creek. Then, thanks to our signs, a wonderful woman reached out. She had been seeing this sweet girl in her neighborhood for a few days. As it turns out, this savvy lady has had experience helping dogs in need—this is the third dog that has wandered onto her property and needed to be trapped!

When I arrived to set the trap, I was surprised to find her lying in the field where I planned to place it. It was obvious she felt really comfortable with her surroundings and the amazing person who's house property she was on, because she stayed close, and kept an eye on me the entire time I set the trap. At one point, she even got close to going inside with me while I was setting it! But I knew if I focused on her at all, she would have left, so I ignored her completely.

Dogs like this want to be close to you, but don't want your direct attention right away. It's so important to understand when to engage and when to leave them be. I filmed the whole process—both setting the trap and retrieving her—and I’m working on editing the footage. I’ll post it to YouTube soon for anyone who’s interested.

Welcome to the good life, sweet girl! She’s now in the care of Rescue One with an incredible foster. Rescue One is a great resource for lost and stray dogs in our area, and I am happy to have collaborated with them to get this girl safe and off the streets. Please give them a follow on social media if you aren't already following their organization.

Big thank you to Stacey Patterson Richardson for coming to my rescue to help me load her into my truck, couldn't have done it without you!

First 2 photos are after capture and in her wonderful foster home, second 2 are while she was roaming that the woman who helped took of her, the next one was right after she was trapped, and the rest are from the camera we had out at the trap.

Our work is only possible with your support. Please consider donating to help us continue rescuing more dogs like her. Every contribution makes a difference!

Drum roll please!!! Here is the "Lebanon Doodle" update you've been waiting for (but not quite what you're expecting!)

A Rescue Two Months in the Making: Meet the Dog Who Stole Our Hearts, Shadow

When we first got the call about a dog that had been roaming for over two months, we knew this was going to be a long road. Multiple failed attempts to catch him had left him wary of people, hiding whenever someone got too close. But we were determined.

Sixty-eight days. That’s how long it took to get him ready, thanks to the incredible dedication of the lady who fed him like clockwork, twice a day, without fail. The day we go to make the capture, things got a little strange. We waited that whole night, and he came, but wouldn't enter the trap. Three sleepless nights were spent waiting all night until 4:30 am each night before heading back to Springfield in hopes of him returning to eat and being caught, but he had other plans in mind. Still, we were determined to get this boy.

A few more times I went down to attempt to capture him but it seems he was moving from this spot, which, after being there for that long, I knew this had to mean someone was feeding him somewhere else, and we needed to know where that was and get them to stop. . I had the person feeding him put up signs with my number on it, and quickly received a bunch of calls and started spreading the word and asking questions to those who called. Then, the next day I was going to go there, I got a call from the feeder: he had followed a couple and their dog into their back yard and they were able to shut it with him inside. The issue now was, how are we going to get him contained in this backyard without him jumping over the fence or digging under it from fear. My heart raced. I knew how delicate the situation could be.

When I arrived, I was hopeful—I could have had him quickly, as he came up to sniff my hand thru the fence. But the presence of too many people spooked him, and he darted to the opposite corner of the yard, barking at me. I entered the yard cautiously, and he put his paws up on the fence, testing if he could jump it. I backed off, giving him space, and asked the feeder to sit with him, as she was the one he trusted more than any of us, even though she has never interacted with him at all yet. Just by her dedication in feeding him, she gained a lot of trust with him.

I took that time to evaluate the yard. Walking along the outside perimeter of the fenced in portion where he was l. I stayed a safe distance, gauging his reaction. He barked, but didn’t panic. I inched closer, then used calming signals, and sitting down, walking backward a few steps, and repeating, in hopes of slowly gaining his trust. Finally, when I got within arm’s reach, he barked a few more times before walking to the opposite side row the yard and up onto their deck.

It was clear he was nervous, but he had calmed down enough to lay on the deck. I sat on the steps, positioning myself carefully to prevent him from bolting past me, snare in hand, though I wanted to avoid using it if possible. I edged closer, one tiny scoot at a time, all while facing away from him and not making eye contact, mindful of his anxiety.

Then he eyed the pool—the only other escape route. I knew a water rescue wasn’t ideal, so I turned away completely and ignored him, giving him time to settle again. When he laid back down, I calmly showed him the snare, and seeing that he wasn’t afraid, I gently lowered it over his head, making sure it didn’t snap and startle him.

I had him! I quietly called out to the feeder who was still sitting in the yard patiently, asking her to bring a crate. He went into the crate without much hesitation at all. He is such a good boy, trusting us completely after everything he’d been through. Now, he’s in the care of the woman who fed him all those nights, happy, playful, and starting to trust humans again.

Watch the video below, to know that this dog just a week before this video was made shrieked in absolute terror when someone approached him is almost unbelievable really. He went from a scared, cautious pup to a joyful dog playing with the people who never gave up on him. His wagging tail and playful energy are a testament to what patience and love can achieve.

If this is your dog, please reach out with proof of ownership. We want to reunite him if he has a loving home. If not, his foster family is ready to welcome him into theirs forever.

HUGE thank you to Kim Fowler who was the heart and soul of this rescue as our dedicated feeder, without her help, NONE of this would have been possible. Tanya Patton Dunn for calling me in on this, Lebanon City Police that allowed me to camp out in various places in Lebanon, Penske Truck Rental in Lebanon for the use of a portion of their lot for 2 months with the trap being there, all of the folks that called in sightings anda helped us along the way, the family that led her into the backyard and allowed me full access to get this guy safely contained, and our donors who allowed us to be able to take this case on. Thank you all so very very much for your encouragement and support.

Time for an update on the Lebanon Doodle!

This guy is smart, and cautious. And so far, this has been my longest conditioning to the trap as of yet. The trap has been in place since June 23rd! But it's now almost finally time to go back down to capture him, because after tonights feeding, if everything goes as planned, he will be eating from where we need him to eat from to capture him. Planning on going down tomorrow evening, and it will be an all nighter most.lilely.ss he typically only comes to eat during the middle of the night each night.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to Tanya for bringing me in on this, and an enormous thank you to Kim who has been the one to feed him 2x a day for this long for us. She is going to foster this sweet boy once he's caught, and I know in my heart this is the perfect spot for him to br. He has no idea the amount of love this woman and her husband already have for him. ❤️

Just look at his sweet face! 🥹🥰

🐾Moments like these make it all worth it.🐾

Meet Miss Freya, a truly special girl.

Freya first appeared on Leigh's Lost and Found, visibly pregnant and wandering through the dense, wooded trails near Highway 65. Rescue One and C.A.R.E. reached out, and I knew we had to act fast to bring her to safety.

We approached with care, not wanting to spook her and risk her moving to an even less accessible area. Day after day, I visited, leaving fresh food in hopes she’d return. But with only one sighting to go on and no consistent sign of her, finding her before she gave birth proved impossible.

Then, after weeks of waiting and hoping, the food was finally eaten. I went back again to put food out while I talked to the people necessary to get permission to trap her if needed, and as I put the food out--there she was!! When I saw her again, it was clear that Freya was no longer pregnant. The milk had long since dried up, confirming our worst fears—she had lost her pups before we could find her. It broke our hearts knowing we couldn’t help her in time.

I spent close to 2 hours trying to befriend her, but Freya was too wary to come close enough to get the help she needed. I left more food and planned to set a trap after the next feeding, but once again, she vanished. We were heartbroken all over again.

Nearly a month later, Freya appeared on Leigh's Lost and Found again, this time in a completely different area, and hanging out in a kind lady’s unfenced backyard. I rushed over, armed with McDonald’s burgers and the tools needed to bring her in—if she’d let me.

She barked at me, just like before, but I knew from the last time I saw her, that she would follow you if you walked away from her. And knew she was extremely food motivated, so combining those 2 key elements, she started following me as I dropped burger pieces behind me. Carefully, I positioned myself, and with one swift move, Freya went for the right burger, and I was able to get her on a lead.

Freya is now in a loving home, thanks to Traci at C.A.R.E., who loved this sweet baby before she even knew her. Traci helped her learn to trust humans again and did an amazing job with her.

Just the other day, I received a heartwarming message from Traci, along with photos of Freya, and I knew I had to share them with you.

This is why I do what I do—because every dog deserves a chance, and their situations are never their fault.

If you’d like to contribute to the cheeseburger and gas fund, ERC could really use your support to keep being able to help dogs like Freya.
