March 17-23 is Animal Poison Prevention week.
Review these tips to help ensure you’re taking the correct precautions at home:
Houseplants and Pet Safety: Some houseplants are toxic to pets, causing gastrointestinal issues or more severe effects. Keep toxic plants out of reach or replace them with pet-safe alternatives. Specific lilies like daylilies and tiger lilies are highly toxic to cats, even through pollen ingestion.
Kitchen Hazards: Certain human foods like chocolate, xylitol, coffee beans, grapes, raisins, onions, alcohol, and macadamia nuts are harmful to pets. Xylitol, found in gum and some peanut butter, poses a risk of blood sugar drop and liver failure in pets.
Safe Storage of Meds: Keep medications, cleaning products, and chemicals out of pets' reach to prevent accidental ingestion. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen, common human pain relievers, can cause severe issues in pets.
Pet Safety Outdoors: Keep pets away from chemicals, fertilizers, and potential garage poisons.
Emergency Preparedness: Have the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or a pet poison hotline number accessible.
