Love those lesson horses to pieces 💓

BY Maddy Brown One of my biggest frustrations in this industry is the lack of understanding and consideration for the role that lesson horses play. So often, I see riders complaining about lesson horses for a huge variety of reasons: for their perceived lack of quality or value, for having to ride o...

I have a boarding spot opening at my place in pleasant view, TN. We are located at Pleasant View Pet Spa & Country Boarding Retreat! Will be full care board, mostly pasture turnout, with a stall when needed! (my horses only get stalled when necessary; inclement weather or stall rest, but can provide stalling in night/day upon request). Feed provided in the am/pm. Outdoor arena available and access to 80 acres for trail riding. Owner of property lives on site so horses always have an eye on them. I also provide lessons in English and Western and haul to shows every other weekend, at the least! Please contact me or TriStar Equestrian for more info! Thanks guys 🫶🏼

Clarksville 79 Riding Club show ✌🏼and my girls killed it again. Only two weeks since the last one and they’ve already made a lot of improvements. Scarlet got lots of firsts and a second in her speed classes and Heather and Rebecca placed top 5 all night in all their ranch classes out of 15 competitors! They work so hard in their lessons and it pays off. I’m so proud of them!

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

Tired of flies and ticks? One thing I’ve heard consistently this year is how bad they have been for our equine friends. I’ve also heard how our fly sprays aren’t seeming to work and I know we’ve all spent lots of 💰💰💰 on repellent. Well not only is TikTok full of amusing videos but I’ve also came across several horsey tips and tricks and this one just seemed too good not to try. Did you guys know that coconut oil has been found to have compounds that are more effective at repelling insects than chemicals? FLIES AND TICKS! I took a little bit on my hands this morning, rubbed on Epona’s legs and belly (not her face, will cause sun burn) and it’s working great! 👍🏼 It was only $12 at Walmart and it’s way healthier for us to apply, especially pregnant ladies! 😅 Feel free to share because I was super excited to try this!!

So proud of Emily!! She placed 4th overall at her first mini trials! The show consisted of dressage, stadium jumping, and cross country and she killed it. I also love to see how kind she is to everyone around her. I love hauling this girl around town and getting to see her show off her skills. Great job!! 🖤

It’s been a good first week at the barn. Good horses, good friends, some bomb Mexican food (3 mins from the barn) and lots of trips to Rural Queen. Life’s good!!

Good morning, friends!! I was supposed to post on Monday but man, life’s busy! 😅 Sorry about that. BUT, I got some information on lessons at T.E. 🤩

❤️ Starting this week, haul in lessons are welcome and highly encouraged at the new Springfield location! UTD coggins and vaccines are required BEFORE your horse arrives on the property. 🛻

🤍 Lessons on our horses will start on 1/16. I am working over these next couple of weeks to get these horses in shape! There will be 5-6 horses available for lessons. 🦄 With that being said, lessons on our horses are limited to 20-25 people a week at this time. I will try my best to be able to schedule people appropriately for those who want group lessons, but please keep in mind the low numbers I will have. Those who have reached out first will be at the top of the list for lessons.

💙 Traveling lessons, I will still be traveling to all of those who have taken lessons with me over the last few months but I will not be adding any more travel clients at new locations.

❤️‍🔥All lessons are an hour long, Mon-Sat! My goal is to provide quality lessons that are catered to your goals! You can take as many or as little lessons as you want throughout the month and payment is required before each lesson starts.

I have a rough schedule written up and will be reaching out to everyone throughout this week to confirm times. Thank you so much for reading until the end, if you made it here! 🤣

So excited for 2023! I couldn’t ask for a better way to bring in the new year! I love starting the year off right with my clients. 💕

Super excited to have Epona’s best friend, Apollo, at the new location in Springfield! 🫶🏼 She’s missed him a lot.

I’ve been so eager to get started at the new barn and settling in has been smooth. 👏🏼 I will give everyone an update on lessons tomorrow so be on the look out for another post!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉
