Hello friends! Please help us thank the 2024 Pawnee Prairie Day Queen, Jr. Queen, Lil Miss Prairie Day and friends for organizing their own car wash / dog wash fundraiser for APL animals! These hard working youngsters raised $410, collected toys and pet food and donated it all to our shelter animals today! We are so grateful and we’re happy to give them a tour of the shelter and meet all the animals who will benefit from their selfless generosity. On behalf of the staff, volunteers, and especially the animals, join us in saying thank you to these amazing kiddos!

Donating your investment(s) to APL helps animals in need AND your pocket book.
When your investments are doing well, you feel amazing! ... and then capital gains tax swoops in to take that feeling away. But we have a solution that can help you avoid paying those pesky taxes and make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals.
If your portfolio contains investments with a large unrealized gain (value of investments have increased significantly since the purchase date and you have not yet sold), you should consider the benefits of donating the stock directly to a 501c-3 organization like Animal Protective League (APL)!
Since APL is a tax-exempt organization, we can sell the stock without having to pay capital gains tax on it and receive the proceeds as a donation.
Oh, and it gets better!
You can also qualify for potential income tax-deductions since you made a charitable contribution!
Interested in giving to APL through your investments? Let us know by reaching out to APL's Executive Director, Deana Corbin, at [email protected] or APL's Development Director, Alexis Haven, at [email protected]. We will provide you with the DTC instructions and work with you to make it happen!

Hi, my name is Little Foot. When I came to the Animal Protective League, I looked healthy, but following an exam, it was discovered that I have a diaphragmatic hernia. This means that the organs that should be in my abdominal cavity are pushing into my chest through a hole is my diaphragm. I can't breathe very well because my lungs can't expand properly. All I want to do is run and play like the other kittens, but I have to use all of my energy to survive. My only hope is a very expensive surgery that can't be performed at APL. I would have to be taken to U of I and the surgery could cost anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000. Being that APL is responsible for the care of hundreds of other animals on a daily basis, they can't afford this lifesaving surgery on their own. I need you.
I am currently being observed in a foster home; I really like it there. My foster says that I am playful, brave, curious, and cuddly. I love to snuggle with my foster, but even more that that…I love to sneak up on her and try to scare her! It’s so funny to me. I like to sleep on my back and show off my tummy and I like to follow my foster mom around the house to see what she’s doing. I want to keep growing and learning and having fun. I want to see a day where I am healthy and can be adopted into a loving home. I need you to help APL ensure that I can have a second chance at life; a life where I can breathe without strain, and finally, run and play like the other kittens.
APL is grateful for those joining in this fundraising effort. Please donate to the care of Little Foot and the many other animals whose lives we are working to save every day. You are Little Foot’s only hope.

Please donate to the care of Lucas today!
And even better, please consider giving this sweet, loving dog a home.
Lucas is a true survivor with a heart full of love and a spirit that shines despite the challenges he's faced. After losing his left forearm as a puppy due to an injury and dealing with some nerve damage in his back legs, Lucas has shown remarkable resilience and determination. His mobility may be limited, but his ability to love and bring joy to every soul he meets is boundless.
Lucas can cover short distances and will do so enthusiastically when he sees someone he loves. Whether it's a gentle nudge or a wag of his tail, his excitement to be near you is truly heartwarming. While he does need assistance getting outside for potty breaks, he is house-trained and will hold it until he's brought out. Lucas even manages to keep himself clean, demonstrating his admirable independence and hygiene habits.
This brave boy is looking for a compassionate and understanding home where he can continue to thrive. Lucas needs someone who will provide him with the care and love he so richly deserves. If you're ready to open your heart and home to a wonderful, unique dog who has so much love to give, Lucas is your dog. You will change his life forever by making him a part of your family and there’s no doubt that he will change your life as well. While he awaits a forever home, please help APL continue to provide him and many others with high-quality care on a daily basis by donating today. Your generosity will save lives.

Meet Lucas, a heartwarming white Lab mix with an inspiring story of resilience. Despite a tough start in life, including losing one of his front legs as a pup and experiencing some difficulty with his back legs, Lucas's spirit remains unbreakable. This super sweet boy, with a smile that lights up any room, is the epitome of loyalty and affection, always eager for pets and belly rubs. Lucas does need to be carried out to use the bathroom, but he is house trained and adapts well with a little extra care. He would thrive in a home where he can be the only pet, receiving all the love and attention he deserves. If you're looking for a loving and courageous companion, Lucas is the perfect match for you. For more information or to adopt, call the APL at 217-544-7387 or fill out an application at apl-shelter.org!

Gravely Injured Kitten Finds Life and Love
No one thought the small orange kitten would survive. His forehead was terribly swollen, most likely from a vehicle strike, and he was, as one
staffer described him, “flat out” when a kind woman from the Pawnee area brought him to the shelter. He was in such bad shape that there seemed no
point in vaccinating him, a standard for new intakes. Then he had a seizure.
But the two-month-old kitten unexpectedly made it through that first October night, and then the next day, and the day after that. The staff named him Escanor. As Escanor recovered, it became clear that he was blind. Disoriented and safely caged where staff could keep an eye on him, he spent his waking hours circling in place, a common behavior following a brain injury. Unable or unwilling to eat on his own, the staff fed him by spoon and syringe. Once recovered from the initial trauma of his accident and with no more seizures, Escanor went to a foster home Thanksgiving Day for care and to follow his progress in adjusting to home life. Confined to a cage at first, he quickly began eating on his own. He put his circling behavior to use by walking in ever-expanding circles until he found his food dish. No matter the time of day he loved to be held. Then it was time to see how Escanor coped in larger spaces. Placed in a “corral,” he circled only when trying to find something: his little house, food dishes, and litter box. Though foster kittens are typically kept isolated from cats already in the house, Escanor was an exception, with the adult cats jumping in and out of his corral to snack on his food and use his litter box. The adult cats were, for certain, acting out of gluttony and convenience, but they were teaching
Escanor how to interact with other cats. And soon they had taught him how to climb out of his corral! In much larger house-world, Escanor explored
on his own and followed the adult cats, sometimes trying to grab their tails. At three weeks in his foster home, he began to chase them, expertly avoiding chair legs and other obstacles. In the evening, especially, when the sound of thundering cat feet interrupted the quiet, Escanor was typically the cat in pursuit. Escanor’s time in a foster home prepared him to be available for adoption in February. But it turns out his foster caretaker wasn’t prepared to give up the charming orange tabby, and his adoption was
finalized on April 16, 2024. Thank goodness Escanor’s rescuer brought him
to APL. Thank goodness for shelter vet Dr. Cathy Best and the loving care of shelter staffers who coaxed him through recovery. Escanor has fully adjusted to his permanent home and its human and feline occupants. With those confusing and painful weeks behind him, the now-seven-pound cat is living his best life—a life that was unimaginable when he arrived at APL’s shelter gravely injured and near death.
