Thank you SO much to the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes and Two Men & A Truck for raising money to support the lifesaving work being done at the Animal Protective League! These organizations came together to raise money for APL by organizing a fundraiser where people could pay to have their dogs' photos put on a jersey. These jerseys were worn by the players for a special night of baseball and now the proceeds will be used to help us care for animals in need! We couldn’t do this work without the support of the amazing and generous people in our community like you. We love the jersey, by the way!

The Animal Protective League (APL) proudly announces the 3rd Annual Dueling Pianos fundraiser event, presented by Levi, Ray & Shoup Inc. We are thrilled to present the phenomenal combined talents of Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos from Chicago!

Event Details:

Date: Friday, March 7, 2025

Time: Doors Open at 6:30 p.m. | Show Starts at 7:30 p.m. | Ends at 10:00 p.m.

Location: Prairie View Reception Center, 8865 State Rte 4, Chatham, IL 62629

What to Expect: Prepare for an electrifying night as Felix and Fingers take the stage with their high-energy, all-request sing-along show. Be part of the interactive fun as music and comedy seamlessly come together, promising an evening of laughter, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories.

Silent Auction and Shelter Dogs: Explore our silent auction for exciting items and experiences, and don't miss the chance to meet some of our adorable adoptable shelter dogs who will be onsite. Your support directly impacts the lives of these furry friends.

Ticket Information:

Tickets: $20 per person

Table Reservation: $200 for a table of 10

Important Notes:

Tickets are only available in advance.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for seating.

No outside food is allowed or will be served during the event.

Thank you to everyone who has donated generously to the continued care of Lucas! Your continued support is appreciated!
He will start attending water therapy again after spending the holidays in a foster home enjoying a break from the shelter. He has recently enjoyed spending time in the shelter's front office sleeping and watching people come and go. Lucas continues to receive close care and attention because of the support of generous donors like you. Lucas and the thousands of other animals whose lives are transformed by APL every year say thank you for caring!

This Valentine’s Day, spread the love and give a furry friend a special day out! Join us on February 14th from 9 AM to 4 PM for our First Annual Valentine’s Doggy Date-Out, proudly partnered with Chewy to send our pups on special dates for the occasion.
Here’s your chance to make a shelter dog’s day unforgettable by taking them out for a fun-filled date! Whether it’s a walk in the park, a car ride for a pup cup, or simply some quality time, your furry companion will appreciate the attention and love.
How it works:
Come by the shelter on February 14th.
Choose your date (a lovely shelter dog).
Take them out for a fun outing (please do not take them to dog parks or to hang out with personal animals).
Each date will be provided with a special Valentine’s Day kit created and sent to us by Chewy, including toys, treats, water bowls, and p**p bags, to make this experience even more special!
Bring them back by 4 PM with a full heart and a wagging tail, unless you would like to keep longer!
It’s a great way to help socialize our pups and give them a taste of the love they deserve, all while making lasting memories.
Let’s make this Valentine’s extra special for our four-legged friends!

It is with heavy hearts we share that Hanna, one of APL’s beloved long-term residents, had to be put to rest on January 15th, 2025 due to a fast advancing cancerous mass. Hanna was loving, playful, and a great friend to all who met her. In Hanna’s time at the Animal Protective League, she made friends with other shelter dogs and plenty of APL staff and volunteers. She spent time in a couple different foster homes and had great fun meeting new people and playing. One foster family recalls that Hanna’s favorite thing to do while staying with them was to hop in their pickup truck and ride with them down the driveway to pick up the mail. Another foster recalls restful moments with Hanna spent on their front porch enjoying fresh air and watching cars pass. APL staff reflect lovingly on her strong appreciation for squeaky toys, saying that if you had a treat in one hand and a squeaky toy in the other, she would undoubtedly choose the toy. Hanna’s memory will forever be a bright spot in the hearts and minds of those who knew her.

Meet Lucas, a 3 yr old male Labrador Retriever. Lucas is a sweet boy and a true survivor with a heart full of love and a spirit that shines despite the challenges he's faced. When he was just a puppy, he lost his left forearm due to a painful and severely damaging injury. He continues to deal with an overall lack of mobility due to nerve damage in his back legs. Lucas has been at APL’s shelter since July 2024 and since then , he’s been given everything he needs to live a comfortable life while he awaits a forever home including long-term pain management medication and joint supplements. Within the last year, he has also started Water Therapy which is a form of rehabilitation that takes place in a saltwater pool, which provides buoyancy to help take pressure off the joints and muscles. This makes it an ideal exercise option for dogs with various physical challenges, allowing them to move and get necessary physical activity without putting strain on their bodies and keeping their bodies upright. Lucas goes to water therapy 2 times a week and he has gained some muscle, particularly in his back legs. His stamina continues to grow which is helping him to live a healthier life. The dogs at APL receive 3 walks every day to provide exercise, enrichment, and excitement throughout their day and Lucas is no exception. Although he may prefer a ride in his wagon, he was also given a wheelchair to try to give him some sort of independence during his walks. Lucas has stayed in a couple different foster homes during his time at APL and loves those vacations from the shelter each time! They give him a change of scenery and decrease stress levels. We are continuing to do what is needed to give Lucas a comfortable life while he awaits an adopter who is ready to receive all the love he can give at the small price of some extra care! The Animal Protective League is dedicated to caring for sick, injured, and abused homeless animals, giving them the care they need to live their healthiest and happiest lives and then finding them homes with responsible adopters. We need your help to continue providing care to Lucas and other animals in our care who are in desperate need of a second chance at life. Lucas has shown remarkable resilience and determination. His mobility may be limited, but his ability to love and bring joy to every soul he meets is boundless.

Sissy is a 5 year old, black and white Pit Bull Terrier whose life has been marked by trial. Because of her resilient spirit and the care that she has received at APL, her transformation has been remarkable. When Sissy was transferred to APL from a local animal control facility, she had a large wound (6-8 inches wide and 10-12 inches long) on her side. We were told that it was potentially a spider bite that caused necrotic skin, but it is more likely that she was burnt by heat or chemicals based on how the wound sloughed and then healed. When Sissy first came to the shelter, no one could touch her. She was very uncomfortable and fearful around new people, but despite difficulties caused by her expected reactivity, APL's medical staff worked carefully with her to ensure she started treatment for her wound right away. She was given pain medication and antibiotics and all the love and attention she needed to start her physical and emotional healing journey.

It took a while for Sissy to become comfortable around staff, but once she was, her sweet personality began to shine through. Her transformation has been unbelievable. Her wound has now healed completely and her trust in and love for people in nearly restored completely. She loves attention and playing and going for walks. She is now quite the fan of meeting new people and she is ready to finally be adopted into a home and family that will love her forever.
