The latest consensus statement on leptospirosis in dogs from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine features the latest understanding about the zoonotic disease to help veterinarians care for their canine patients.

Please consider Lepto vaccines for all of your dogs. AAHA and AVMA no longer view it as a big, outdoor dog disease.

In our area, raccoons and other small wildlife can spread the disease.

Disposable hand warmers contain elemental iron. Once the iron is removed from its plastic packaging and exposed to air, the iron becomes oxidized and heats up. If your pet ingests this part of a disposable hand warmer, it’s likely that they could experience symptoms of an upset stomach.
However, if the hand warmer was unused and ingested by your pet, thermal burns can occur in the stomach and vomiting or diarrhea with blood can be seen. If your dog swallows one of the hand warmers intact, it could also cause an intestinal blockage and require surgery to remove.
Always keep items such as disposable hand warmers up and out of paws’ reach, and when disposing of used items, be sure to make sure your trash is secured to where your pet can’t get into it!

Here at Prompt Vet, we don’t have “receptionists”. We have skilled veterinary assistants and technicians in training working all positions in the clinic.

You may see them helping out with medications, taking animal histories or answering phones at the front desk. Rest assured they are skilled staff here to help your little ones be safe, happy and healthy!

Patient of the Week

This poor youngster came to us from our own neighborhood. This juvenile Red Tailed Hawk presented unable to stand up on his own. Through our exam we were not able to feel any broken bones, but he did seem a bit thin.

Our in house bloodwork showed very low protein levels in his blood plasma, which is a sign of possible starvation. He had normal blood cell numbers though which indicated he was not anemic or dehydrated.

While starvation can ground birds, it's usually an inability to fly, not stand, that is seen with that. Because of his situation, he was brought to a veterinarian to get x-rays to look for any more internal breaks that we can't feel on a physical exam, as well as further evaluation to help him get on the road to recovery.

As you can tell, his inability to stand unassisted didn't dampen his attitude, and he managed to use the towels we provided to prop him up some to position himself to give us a good glare while we were taking care of him! He's got the right attitude to fight through his troubles for sure.

Are wolves dangerous to humans?

An updated reported studied the time period between 2002 and 2020 and found that, worldwide, there were 26 fatal attacks. Of those, 14 were due to rabies.

For comparison's sake, 20 people died in the United States in 2019 from lightning strikes.

Our summary of the report is here:

♦️♦️♦️♦️♦️FYI!!!♦️♦️♦️♦️♦️

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

🦂It's creepy crawly season, but if you're not a fan of arthropods, Pallid Bats may be your new favorite...pals.
Enjoying a diet consisting of scorpions, centipedes, and other creepy crawlies, 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘻𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘴 appears to be immune to scorpion venom and enjoys a little crunch with its protein.
That being said, these bats have been known to opportunistically feed on nectar, a very unusual behavior for an insectivore.
Think about that mixture the next time you pour a bowl of cereal. 😋
