As many of you know, our beloved Gibson was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer earlier this month. On Monday night, July 17, 2023, Gibson passed peacefully surrounded by the same love, comfort and security that he provided to others during his all too short of a time with us. Gibson spent six years serving the citizens of Sangamon County, and his ability to bring peace to those suffering from trauma, pain, and anxiety was second to none. He gave every ounce of himself to his job and he loved the daily interactions of work life. He became a fixture in the Sangamon County Courthouse, and was happy to say hello to everyone he met. Whether he was working with adults, children, or veterans, getting a little attention from Sangamon County staff, or just trotting through security each day, he always had that “Gibson smile” on his face and was ready to receive a quick pat, ear scratch or belly rub from anyone he met. He enjoyed going to various organizations and schools in the community to help his humans share how important the program was for victims and survivors. We truly thank the Sangamon County States Attorney’s Office, and the entire county leadership for supporting us in bringing the Facility Dog Program to our community. Gibson was an incredible asset to the Victim-Witness Program and we are grateful for every day we had the opportunity to work with him.
Gibson’s handlers are taking some time to grieve this sudden loss. We still cannot believe this beautiful, loving, soulful dog will not be working with us each day. Sangamon County and area law enforcement are assisting with planning a funeral procession in downtown Springfield next week. We will share more information on this page so everyone who loved Gibson has the opportunity to join us in saying goodbye.
If you have a story, photo, or video to share, please feel free to share it on Duo Dog – Good Dog Gibson, we would love to see your memories.
We love you Gibson♥️
