Meet Jenny, our animal of the week!
Effingham County Animal Shelter Director Lorna Shelton is in the process of placing an essential tool for pet safety in the hands of the public. With the assistance of Effingham County Fire Rescue (ECFR) personnel, she is installing easy-to-use pet microchip scanners on the grounds of four ECFR stations.
Implanted under a pet’s skin, microchips contain a unique ID number. When a scanner reads a chip, it retrieves the ID and links it to the owner’s contact information in a database.
The handheld devices, housed in a waterproof box, are already positioned at Station 9 (737 Roebling Road, Faulkville), Station 12 (1171 Ga. Hwy 119 North, Springfield) and Station 13 (91 Springfield Ave., Guyton). One will be placed at Station 16 (109 Goshen Commercial Park, Rincon) by the end of the week.
The scanners were donated by HOPE (Helping Our Pets of Effingham).
