SPRINGFIELD – Intake diversion is a key component of the Effingham County Animal Shelter’s strategy of keeping its euthanasia numbers as low as possible.

Intake diversion is a proactive series of practices designed to prevent or reduce the number of animals entering the shelter. The aim is to help animals stay in their current environments or find alternative solutions before they are brought into the shelter, reducing overcrowding and strain on resources. This approach focuses on keeping animals in their homes, communities or temporary care whenever possible, providing humane alternatives to shelter intake.

Animal Shelter Director Lorna Shelton recently installed handheld microchip scanners at four Effingham County Fire Rescue stations. She encourages citizens to use them to help reconnect lost animals with their owners.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is typically inserted under an animal’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. It emits a unique identification number when activated by a scanner.

“Utilizing the scanners will help keep animals out of the shelter,” Shelton said. “If someone scans an animal and it isn’t chipped, they should contact the shelter that so we can post information about it (on social media).”

Scanners are positioned at ECFR Station 9 (737 Roebling Road, Faulkville), ECFR Station 12 (1171 Ga. Hwy 119 North, Springfield), ECFR Station 13 (91 Springfield Ave., Guyton) and ECFR Station 16 (109 Goshen Commercial Park, Rincon).

Other diversion strategies include:
1. Rehoming assistance: Helping pet owners rehome their animals directly, providing resources and guidance on how to find a new home, avoiding the need for a shelter intake.
2. Behavioral support: Offering training or behavioral intervention to resolve issues (e.g., aggression, separation anxiety) that may lead owners to surrender their pets, preventing unnecessary intake.
3. Temporary foster care: Connecting animals with foster homes for short-term care, where they can be kept out of the shelter and in a more comfortable, less stressful environment.
4. Community outreach and education: Educating pet owners on responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying/neutering, and ways to address common behavioral or health issues that might otherwise lead to animals being surrendered.
5. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR): For feral or community cats, shelters might promote TNR programs, where cats are trapped, neutered, and returned to their original location, preventing the need to intake them into shelters while controlling populations humanely.

Anyone who abandons an animal on public property or in a manner that endangers the animal's well-being can face criminal charges. This can include fines and/or imprisonment.

Do not drop animals off at fire stations.

If you witness an animal being abandoned on public property, report it to Humane Enforcement deputies at 912-754-3449. If it isn't microchipped, take a picture and send it and pertinent information to [email protected].

Handheld chip scanners, housed in a waterproof box, are positioned at ECFR Station 9 (737 Roebling Road, Faulkville), ECFR Station 12 (1171 Ga. Hwy 119 North, Springfield), ECFR Station 13 (91 Springfield Ave., Guyton) and ECFR Station 16 (109 Goshen Commercial Park, Rincon).
