SPRINGFIELD – National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day is observed annually on May 8 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Effingham County Emergency Management Agency (EEMA) and the Effingham County Animal Shelter think it’s a day worth remembering, too.
On Wednesday, EEMA Coordinator Shanna Smith joined Shelter Director Lorna Shelter in an effort to enhance public awareness about the need to remember pets’ needs while girding for a national disasster and other emergency situations. They reminded citizens that the start of hurricane season is about three weeks away.
Smith and Shelton distributed pamphlets and tip sheets, and offered verbal advice. They shared some of this information during a TV interview with WJCL’s AJ Sisson. The interview included a glimpse of the American Kennel Club Reunite Disaster Relief Trailer that the shelter recently received as a gift from the Savannah Kennel Club.
Several raffles were conducted. Prizes included book bags filled with items a pet might need during an evacuation and a solar emergency radio.
Note: Watch Shelton’s dog crating advice at the end of the attached video.
