Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center

Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center TJO provides animal control services for Springfield, Holyoke, and Chicopee Massachusetts. We respond to 3,000-4,000 animal-related calls annually.

Our staff and facility provide animal control services to three area cities -- Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. We are one of the largest regional animal control programs in the state. It is our goal to make this region a model for other animal control services. We provide temporary housing for over 4,000 stray and abandoned animals each year. We also provide 10-day rabies quarantine housing for

unvaccinated animals that have bitten either humans or other domestic animals. Our primary service is that of public health and safety. We are well-versed in rabies and zoonotic disease issues for the safety of our citizens. We respond to animal-related calls 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Each TJO animal control officer is certified by the state of Massachusetts. All stray dogs are mandated by Massachusetts state law to be held for 7 days. In Massachusetts, there is no required holding period for cats. If unclaimed, animals are evaluated for both health and temperament prior to being made available for adoption. Dogs are evaluated more thoroughly for temperament to help ensure they will be safe, enjoyable companions. The facility has an in-house veterinarian four days per week, responsible for shelter animal wellness and sterilization surgery. We do not have veterinary services available to the public.

We’ve had many calls asking us what we could use for our animals this holiday season. Aside from wishing all our cats and dogs would find homes, here’s our wishlist for them. They’ve been really good so we’re hoping our TJO village can help us out.
Please notice we have selected chicken and turkey wet food for our kitties as it’s much easier on their bellies.

TJO Animal Control Officers often encounter families that need assistance with a variety of issues. Through our collaborative efforts with the MSPCA-Angell we were fortunate to receive several insulated dog houses that help residents comply with state regulations.

When ACO Lawson met Nami & Rocky, it was clear these pups were happy and healthy, but REALLY love to be outdoors. Their owner was unaware of many regulations in place to ensure dogs are safe when outdoors. ACO Lawson quickly brought them up to speed and was able to provide a large, insulated doghouse for the dogs.

Rocky & Nami were quite smitten with their new outdoor shelter that enables them to spend more time outdoors playing. While they spend plenty of their day in the home with their family, they'll be able to get their zoomies out outside!

When Adam arrived at TJO, his personality was like that of so many other young male kitties who come into the shelter. He was bold, wild, and easily overstimulated. In a traditional kennel he was defensive and worried. He would lash out when people tried to care for him. But we know that space often makes all the difference for cats who are worried in kennel settings. Luckily, a colony room opened up and Adam moved right in. Colony rooms allow cats space to move around, play, and choose whether they want to interact with people or other cats. They also provide space for more enrichment items. These rooms help cats to exercise their bodies, brains, and free will.

Once settled in the colony room, we saw a transformation with Adam. He was still a wild, busy guy but with room to roam he learned to settle and his days of lashing out ended! He may still get a bit overstimulated but now his nibbles are simply love bites and don’t leave any broken skin. With extra space Adam now has the ability to choose to move away when he has had enough interaction and no longer feels cornered as he did in a kennel.

Please consider donating to the Foundation for TJO Animals today so we can transform the cat colony room into an amazing space for the TJO cats. https://givingtuesday.mightycause.com/organization/Tjofoundation

When Carrie and Carolyn Horacek stopped by TJO today with Coco they didn’t know that it was Giving Tuesday. They just knew that TJO was near and dear to their hearts and they wanted to donate in honor of Carrie’s recent 40th birthday and because of their love for their TJO alum Coco.

Coco was adopted 13 years ago, shortly after the 2011 tornado. Carrie had been experiencing PTSD following the tornado and had tried several interventions. It wasn’t until she had adopted Coco from TJO that she began sleeping through the night and finding peace in her life again.

Carrie recently celebrated her 40th birthday and asked that instead of presents people donate to TJO. Today they presented us with a check for $500. When they heard that their donation would help the cats of TJO they were delighted to be a part of this effort.

Cat colony rooms allow for our cats to move around, access hiding spaces, and cozy spots to nap, hammocks, walkways to play on and enrichment items. Over the years countless cats have utilized these spaces during their shelter stay and the wear and tear is showing.

We are excited that this year’s campaign is focused on redoing and upgrading these rooms that are so critical for their success and happiness. Please join us as the Foundation raises funds to redo the walls and doors, enhance enrichment playscapes, and make life better for cats in our communities.
