Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center

Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center TJO provides animal control services for Springfield, Holyoke, and Chicopee Massachusetts. We respond to 3,000-4,000 animal-related calls annually.

Our staff and facility provide animal control services to three area cities -- Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. We are one of the largest regional animal control programs in the state. It is our goal to make this region a model for other animal control services. We provide temporary housing for over 4,000 stray and abandoned animals each year. We also provide 10-day rabies quarantine housing for

unvaccinated animals that have bitten either humans or other domestic animals. Our primary service is that of public health and safety. We are well-versed in rabies and zoonotic disease issues for the safety of our citizens. We respond to animal-related calls 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Each TJO animal control officer is certified by the state of Massachusetts. All stray dogs are mandated by Massachusetts state law to be held for 7 days. In Massachusetts, there is no required holding period for cats. If unclaimed, animals are evaluated for both health and temperament prior to being made available for adoption. Dogs are evaluated more thoroughly for temperament to help ensure they will be safe, enjoyable companions. The facility has an in-house veterinarian four days per week, responsible for shelter animal wellness and sterilization surgery. We do not have veterinary services available to the public.

Update! We are in contact with this pup's owner who is on their way to meet our officer at the ER. Thank you to all who shared.

Good evening Facebook. We believe this dog is named Papi. He was struck by a car near Carew St and Farragut St in Springfield. He is microchipped but the officer on duty has had no luck reaching an owner and it's possible the information is not current.

He is on his way to the emergency room in critical condition and we are trying to locate his people as quickly as possible. If you recognize him, please call us at 413-781-1484x1.

We are beyond happy on this National Cat Day!!!

Sylvester was adopted from TJO in 2018. We are unsure what the circumstances were that caused him to be found as a stray again this past July but we are happy he found his way back to us. He was emaciated and had severe anemia. His condition was dire to say the least. Here at TJO, we don’t just give up! Sylvester was stabilized and set off to one of our amazing foster homes.
Over the last several months, Sylvester defied the odds in foster! He was a love bug even when he first arrived in such lousy shape. He gained weight, he gained strength, he thrived!!!
Today, on National Cat Day Sylvester met Bob! To say it was a perfect match is an understatement. Sylvester, went right over to him for pets and attention. There were tears and well wishes from his loving foster (Alanna pictured).
We wish them many years of happiness, ear rubs, and cuddles.

We wanted to take a moment to update you on our friend. Dubbed "Snow" for now, he had a great first day of the rest of his life. Our officers are following up a few leads we've received, but we don't have anything concrete yet.

Snow spent his day chilling in an office and enjoying leisurely strolls on this gorgeous day. His personality started coming out and we learned he knows sit & paw! He even played with a couple toys.

The vet team monitoring his recovery is cautiously optimistic regarding Snow's condition. Based on his initial test results we're hopeful that his anemia will resolve with regular meals and flea treatment. His kidneys did receive some damage due to an infection and his poor nutrition. We're starting him on a course of antibiotics and should have a better idea of his recovery expectations in a few weeks.

We thank everyone for their kind words, thoughts, prayers, and donations. We're also grateful to individuals who have provided some leads for us to act on. If you would like to make a momentary donation to help Snow, please follow the link: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/ForHMZsVNbwJOxllwfx0nw

If you would like to help the animals in our care, we would love donations of canned dog food.

Good afternoon friends. We're looking for help identifying the owners of this dog who was brought in as a stray. We have reason to believe all the information provided by the finder of this dog may have been falsified.

This dog has already received initial care here at TJO and further diagnostics are pending. He is being started on a refeeding plan while we await further test results and testing. If you would like to help us treat him and others like him, please consider a donation to the Foundation for TJO Animals. https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/ForHMZsVNbwJOxllwfx0nw

We know many of you will be outraged by the condition of this poor baby, but we are hoping someone may recognize him and be able to provide information that might lead us to identify his owners. We would like this information for a number of reasons. First, we want to ensure there are no more animals in need. Second, contagious disease and exposure to substances haven't been ruled out as additional concerns. And lastly, we'd love to learn more about how this poor boy ended up in this condition and hopefully acquire a legal surrender to allow us to obtain ownership sooner, rather than later.

Tips can be sent via messenger or called in directly to our animal control line at 413-781-1484x1. Calls are confidential. Please share far and wide as we suspect this dog did not come from Indian Orchard as originally reported by the finder. As always, thanks for your help!

Huge Thank You to Alicia and Zaida. These two TJO supporters had a fun girls day shopping at the last KMart on the contential US, in Long Island, NY. When they got there they saw most of the remaining items were for animals. Lucky for our critters these ladies purchased 250 of our kitties fave flavored foods along with, cat toys, litter and catnip for our cats and wee pads for the dogs! We can’t thank them enough for thinking of our critters!

** Foster needed! **

ACO Lazu just dropped Ace off for his surgery this morning. Ace is having a plate placed in his ankle due to an injury while playing that tore ligaments in his wrist. Please send positive vibes and well wishes.

This energetic, lovable goofball would do best recovering in a home. Could it be yours? Check out information on fostering below. If you think you can help Ace, or any of our other animals, please get in touch with us.

Ace’s surgery is made possible by support from The Foundation for TJO Animals. This 501c3 group is committed to supporting animals and their medical needs at our shelter and we are grateful for their ongoing support. Check them out at: www.tjofoundation.org
