Feel Good Fri-YAY!

Meet King, a 9 year old Beagle/Pekingese combo. His hooman is currently out of work and reached out to Kane's for vet care assistance regarding King's skin issues. Thanks to our furrends at Dakin Humane Society Pet Health Center, King was treated yesterday and went home with antibiotics and prednisone. Thanks to our Krusaders, we sponsored $143.11. We'll be adding this pet family to our C.A.R.E. Kit roster to receive dog food deliveries to get them through this rough patch. Another loved dog kept with his furever family thanks to you!

We're giving BIG Paws Up to our furrends at Smithland Pet Center - Ware and Ludlow locations - for their recent donations to our C.A.R.E. Kit program. Both locations ran donation drives for Kane's. Our pet families will benefit greatly from this generosity! Thank you to everyone who donated! Thank you Brittany and Kelly! And thank you to Board Member Sherry M. for picking up all the goodies!

Please Read -- A Message From Our Founder

Today, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. I've been thinking a lot lately about hope - not the passive, blind kind of hope - ACTIVE hope. Hope is transformative, hope is life-changing when it is in motion. The pure essence of hope is love in action. This is a core value of Kane's Krusade.

We were inspired (nearly 14 years ago!) to explore different solutions to long-time problems. In the early days, we didn't have a handbook or a manual and a lot of the time, it was a hopeful experiment.

Our guiding force remains the same - Active Hope. We have the audacious belief that goodness and kindness matter. That meeting people where they are at and offering resources and good will creates opportunities for growth. The audacious belief that we don't have to accept the way things are just because they've always been that way. That even though we are small, we are powerful in our pursuit of a more kind and just community. That lifting people up benefits everyone. Doing the right thing for the most vulnerable in society may not be easy, convenient or wrapped up in a pretty bow, but doing the right thing is always right on time.

The world has it's share of disappointment, sadness, injustice and greed. But we can choose not to feed that part of the world. We can choose to do what we can, when we can, where we are, with what we have, for as long as we can. That, my dear friends, is ACTIVE HOPE.

So if you're looking for hope, if you're looking for a group of committed people making real change in their community, look to us. We've been actively providing hope for well over a decade and we're just getting started.

Like if you agree, share in the comments what Active Hope looks like to you and pass this on to a friend!

Feel Good Fri-Yay! Rubey Pupdate!

Rubey is a sweet elderbull in our C.A.R.E. Kit program. Today she went back to our furrends at Holyoke Animal Hospital for a recheck on an ear infection. Unfortunately, this seems to be caused by allergies which are an ongoing concern requiring steroids. We are so grateful to our Krusaders. Your donations sponsored $83.31 today and another $74.19 earlier this month. Rubey also remains on a limited ingredient diet.

Rubey was found by her hooman Judy's son about 2 years ago. She was abandoned in a crate in a dark basement with no food or water. She had apparently been like that for a few days. Judy welcomed Rubey into her home. This pet family was referred to us last year by Holyoke Animal Hospital. Judy is an elderly woman and cannot afford Rubey's medications without our assistance. Two Krusaders stepped up to sponsor Rubey monthly - thank you Donna and Lynn! We are still looking to add additional sponsors for this sweet girl. You will receive monthly email updates with your donation. How wonderful that we can work together to make the rest of Rubey's life the BEST of her life!

Thank you, Tina!

We're doing zoomies over here cuz we just heard the results of last week's fundraiser Christmas With Kane's! After expenses, over $3,500 was raised! And it gets better - thanks to a matching grant that began January 1st, that amount will be DOUBLED!

We are so grateful to Tina Perreault, founder of Mason’s Mission. Tina was inspired by the love of her pittie Mason to create a group that fundraises for animal charities in the area. This is such a urgently needed mission. Every hour we don't have to spend fundraising is an hour we can dedicate to assisting more pet families.

Tina is an amazing woman with boundless energy, talent and compassion. She has overcome obstacles in her own life to do great things. Although Mason has passed, his spirit lives on in the wonderful legacy Tina created.

Thanks To You!

Yesterday, Kane's Krusade provided an emergency C.A.R.E. Kit to a pet family in need. Tyler was referred by a former Kane's family. Tyler is disabled and living in a camper in a friend's backyard. He has three dogs - Flea, a 7 month old Australian Cattle Dog; Soxx, a 9 month old Husky and Breagain, a 9 year old spaniel/shih tzu combo.

Tyler was so anxious about his dogs when he called us for help. Yesterday, he received a C.A.R.E. Kit including 125 lbs of dry dog food, wet food, treats, dog bowls, a collar and two leashes. We will be assisting Tyler with spay/neuter for his two young dogs and updating shots. Stay tuned for pupdates!

We are only able to respond to situations like this because you give, care and share. Thank you for helping us keep these loved dogs with their furever hooman.

We're doing zoomies!

Paws Finding Peace held a holiday pet food drive for Kane's. Thank you to all the staff and clients who donated items from our Wishlist. This food will especially help our small and elderly dogs.

But that's not all! Last year, Dr. Lauren Atkins began earmarking memorial donations in honor of clients for Kane's and today we received a $2,500 donation! This is such a generous and kind gesture! How wonderful to know that out of the loss of a beloved pet, a pet family will receive care they need to keep their dog.

And there's more! Thanks to a generous Foundation who wishes to remain anonymous, Kane's has a $25,000 match grant challenge underway! That means every donation will be doubled including this one from Paws Finding Peace!

We can't thank Dr. Atkins and her staff enough for their support throughout the years. Paws Finding Peace offers an important service to our community by providing in-home euthanasia and water-based cremation for pets. Thank you for all you do!

New year, new round of C.A.R.E. Kits for pet families in the 413! We're already prepping for our February deliveries. Today, we picked up food donations from our furrends at Eastfield Hospital for Animals, Smithland Pet Center (Ludlow) and Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center. Lots of dry dog food, canned food and treats! Thanks to Family Krew member Kent W. and also to Heidi B. for assisting with pick up and storage. Next step - inventory, organizing and packing!

Happy New Year, Krusaders!

We're highlighting some of our favorite Tails of Hope from 2024. From the hooman in one of our pet families:

"I’m a 62-year-old woman with chronic disabilities. Lucy Loo was abandoned on a highway in South Carolina. She was found in a horrible physical and emotional state, extremely malnourished. Her eyes were severely infected and had to be removed.
Lucy was adopted by a family that loved her but didn’t have the ability to care for her special needs. She was going to be returned to the shelter with the possibility of euthanasia because she was a pit bull with little training and blind. I opened my heart and home because if not me than who would take her?

"Lucy was struggling to settle in. I called over ten places seeking help for Lucy, determined not to fail her. I had all but given up when I found Kane’s Krusade. I found on the other end of the line a compassionate, knowledgeable woman named Kim. She listened and allowed me to tell our story. Kane’s Krusade has provided constant support to both Lucy and me. They provide monthly food, vaccinations and vet care.

"Kane’s is an all hands-on deck, boots on the ground organization. They found me an air conditioner in the heat of July. Lucy and I were attacked by another dog. It was extremely traumatizing. Kim sent out a dog trainer to help Lucy heal emotionally and physically.

"What Kane’s has provided Lucy and me is immeasurable, and essential to both our lives. Sometimes bad things happen to good people and dogs. Whether it is illness, loss of income or just aging, sometimes a person needs to be loved and that is exactly what Kane’s Krusade has provided us.

"We are forever grateful for your donations to Kane’s for improving the lives of both owners and pets in our community."

Kathy and Lucy Loo

2024 Tails of Hope Highlights

One of our mantras here at Kane's is "don't let perfect be the enemy of good". We assist pet families at their worst, often in crisis. We cannot solve all their challenges, but we do what we can, when we can, with the resources we have available. The goal remains the same - to keep pet families together for as long as possible.

Dolce, Niko (pittie) and their hooman Mary really touched us. They were unhoused and staying in a motel. Mary reached out when Niko was having difficulty with a nasal mass. Unfortunately, the vet determined that Niko had inoperable cancer. We decided to give this pet family as much time together as possible and treated Niko with antibiotics, prednisone and pain meds. That was at the beginning of Feb. Niko idid great on the meds for some time - lots of energy, eating, happy - much better than any of us expected. So it was a shock when Dolce passed suddenly with kidney failure.

We assisted this pet family with a short - term stay in a motel, numerous vet visits, diagnostics, medications and euthanasia. Dolce lived several months longer than expected, which was a tremendous comfort to Mary. Even though he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, their time together was precious.

This is why we Krusade!

Today we continue with 2024 highlights.

Phoebe and her hooman were referred to us by the Red Cross. They were displaced due to a fire and were living in a rental while repairs were made. Phoebe needed to be spayed and with all the recent loss, Jonathan could not afford one more expense. Thankfully, we coordinated a SPAW day for Phoebe with our furrends at Dakin Humane Society.

Fast forward a few months and Phoebe and her hooman are still living in a rental. Phoebe has been struggling with being in her crate during the day while Jonathan is at work. Even though he has someone let her out twice a day, she continues to be anxious. Jonathan reached out to us and we sponsored a visit to South Paw Animal Care so Phoebe could receive some calming meds and a rabies vaccination.

Thank you for helping us ease this sweet soul's day while she and her hooman wait to return to their home.

More 2024 Highlights!

We are fortunate to receive pet family referrals from the American Red Cross. This particular situation involved two elderly hoomans (one disabled) and their two dogs. Maxx is an 8 year old Lab and Kizer is a 9 month German Shepherd. In seconds, their life was upended when someone's car crashed into the living room of the house they were renting. The car came inches from hitting Amy who was on the couch. Thankfully no one was hurt. Unfortunately, this left the pet family with no where to go.

Thanks to a grant from the Hampden District Attorney's office, Kane's sponsored 2 weeks at a pet friendly motel. We also shipped several bags of food to Maxx and Kizer. We are so grateful to the DA's office and all our Krusaders for helping us make a difference for this pet family at a critical time!

Feel Good Fri-YAY!

While we're taking time off to recharge this howliday season, it's the perfect time to look back and celebrate what we've accomplished together. Over the next week, we'll be sharing some of our favorite Tails of Hope from 2024. See if we picked yours!

This Spring, we helped this adorable chunky monkey - a 13 year old corgi/chi combo. Marley, an animal advocate and all around great hooman, reached out to us regarding this pet family. Oscar's hooman Deborah is an elderly disabled woman living on a fixed income and taking care of her elderly autistic child. She was very concerned about Oscar's teeth. Marley offered to transport Oscar to a local vet for an exam.

We ended up going to an urgent care because there wasn't any other availability. It was a good call because Oscar had severe dental disease and 3 abscesses in his mouth. He was given antibiotics and pain meds to hold him over until his dental surgery, where he had 15 teeth removed. Thanks to your generous donations, we sponsored the dental consult and surgery. Oscar is doing great!

BIG PAWS UP to our furrend Marley who transported Oscar and his hooman Deborah to the appointment and her community who have donated towards Oscar's care. Working together, we accomplish so much more!
