I am working with Leo, the handsome lab puppy, on lying down ("chill" is chosen cue word by his family.) He got the luring, with. no treat, very quickly, so I am trying to see if he understands the game and just starts lying down on his own, without the hand signal.
It's a bit of stop and go, but some healthy frustration is part of what makes the pups think! I just have enough experience to know when they need a little extra help again vs when I just need to wait them out.

Do some of you with adolescent dogs experience this?! You are trying to recall your dog, he glances at you momentarily (if that), then goes right back to what he was doing!
Just like human teens, many young dogs find their own "hobbies" --playing with doggie friends, exploring the back yard, chasing things etc.--more interesting than paying attention to their people.
What to do? 1. Become more essential, more central to your dog again! 2. Impress on your dog that certain requests--such as recall--are not negotiable...after all, his life may depend upon it!

This is the perfect introductory group class for adult dogs and young dogs over 5 months of age! Emphasis is on polite lifelong habits. We will emphasize practical skills such as not jumping, but rather greeting people politely by sitting; settling down calmly; always coming when called, attention under distractions; and walking on a loose leash. We will also cover all position changes (sit, down, stand), stays, leave it, drop it, place, and even some fun tricks!

We were invited to a Memorial Day get together at one of our neighbors. I wasn't there in my dog trainer capacity, so I was just choosing to be amused by how comfortable their dog, Domino, was at finding himself at the dinner table! (It was a close call, several times, with the hamburgers and the chicken on the table...)

I am teaching Leo, the lab puppy, to lie down when he hears "chill" and sees the hand signal of my palm lowering toward the ground. I start by luring him with a treat, but I quickly transition to luring him with an empty hand (then rewarding.). He does very well, very quickly, so I choose to push him to the next step, wanting him to just figure out what the game is, without the lure. At this point, Leo is a little frustrated, because he has not quite had his "a-ha" moment yet. Being a little lab, he wants the treat very badly! But how to get it?! I am working with him, so that he has successes often enough that he doesn't give up; yet I never go back to luring him, pushing him to figure it out on his own.
