Vet Science students had a wonderful guest speaker and demo on Thursday. Commander Jennifer Stokes from The Ohio Special Response Team with her canine partners, Baloo and Karma visited to explain the incredible abilities dogs have using their noses. Commander Stokes explained the training process involved with these dogs. Commander Stokes broke down the quadrants of operant conditioning, explaining the difference between positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. It was fascinating to learn about scent theory and how that needs taken into consideration when a search and rescue dog shows a marking behavior. All types of environmental conditions have different considerations. Baloo did a fantastic job with his demo, locating a sample hidden by a student while Baloo was out of the building. He left no stone unturned and found the hidden specimen.

Today Veterinary Science students visited ST Genetics Ohio Heifer Center in South Charleston where over 5,000 head of cattle reside. A c-section was in progress when we first arrived on our way to the nursery barn. Students visited with the newborn calves who were just hours old. It was pretty impressive seeing the robot barn where robotic milkers, feeders and even cleaners work to keep nearly 1,000 head of cows clean, fed and comfortable. We enjoyed discussing technology and automation, animal care, and most importantly, careers in agriculture. It was a great day on the farm!
