Trick or Treat!!! Halloween is a time for goodies. Caramel apples, pumpkin donuts, chocolates, and candy corn make for a delicious holiday. It is well known that chocolate can be toxic for our furry friends, but sugary candy can also pose risks for toxicity. Too much sugar can cause stomach upset, excessive thirst, and in severe cases electrolyte changes. If your concerned about a tasty treat your pet has consumed, please reach out to your local DVM or the ASPCA animal poison control for further help.

Q&A with Certified Veterinary Technician Allyna Tucker.

Q: How long have you been a CVT?
A: “I’ve been certified for 6 years, at Laketown for 8 years, and in vet med for 9 years.”

Q: What are some of the highs and lows as a CVT?
A: “Being in general practice means you get to see a little bit of everything. I love seeing clients bring in their new pets, watching them grow, and change throughout their lives. Then comes the sad part: you have to watch them go. But I also consider that positive, because we have the ability to help them pass peacefully.”

Q: Did you always know you wanted to work with animals?
A: “Yes, since I was 5 years old. Animals have always been my passion.”

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: “Have you ever heard the saying “saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever”? That. That is the most rewarding part. We can’t save them all, but we can save this one.”

Q: What advice would you give someone looking to become a CVT?
A: “Shadow. Volunteer. Work in kennels. Veterinary medicine isn’t for everyone. It isn’t for the faint of heart. Make sure you see the ugly parts, because it’s not just puppies and kittens. If you do all of that and still feel drawn to it, then animals are probably your passion!”

Q: Do you have any pets?
A: “I have a pittie named Nahlah and a Doberman named Lady. I’ve had Nahlah since she was 6 weeks old (she is 11 now) and Lady since she was 12 weeks old (she is 7 now).”

Q: Tell me about the techs you work with.
A: “I really love our group of techs. We all get along really well, despite seeing each other everyday. We support each other and can make the worst days bearable. A lot of people say it is a red flag when businesses say their employees are like family, but I love my Laketown family!”

Allyna, thank you for all you do!

In celebration of Certified Veterinary Technician Week and Veterinary Assistant Week we did a Q&A with our very own certified veterinary technician, Pamela Bragg, CVT.

Q: How long have you been a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)?
A: Haha twenty-three years.

Q: That is a good long while. What has kept you in the profession?
A: I enjoy the job, and it comes naturally to me.

Q: Did you always know you wanted to work with animals?
A: Ever since I was little, I wanted to work with animals. My Grandmother would ask when I was a very young girl if I was going to have children and I would say, “No, I am going to have puppies.” My sister still teases me about that.

Q: What are some of the highs and lows as a CVT?
A: “One of the highs are the animals that come in and we are able to diagnose and heal. We get to see them 110% better. Like the splenectomies, sneaky Addison’s…they are struggling and you can turn them around. Another high would be the clients. I love seeing the same clients with new pets throughout the years.”
“Some of the lows are compassion fatigue and the ones we can’t help save. We see challenging things and some pets are in rough shape.”

Q: How old were you when you became a vet nurse?
A: “I was thirty years old, and I will be sixty-one and I am still going. If you take care of yourself, you can stay in this business for a good long while.

Q: Do you have any pets?
A: “I have two- I have Auggie who is an English bull terrier who is 4 and rescued. I also have Gertie who is a Frenchie who I also rescued.”

Q: What advice do you have for someone thinking about becoming a veterinary nurse.
A: “Spend a lot of time volunteering or shadowing at a vet clinic. You may think it’s only fun. And it is so much fun. But there are very hard days. Take anatomy, biology, and math classes. Those set you up in high school for this field. Also, go for it. It’s a rewarding career.”

From all of us at Laketown Animal Hospital, thank you for all you do Pam!

We are family owned and operated and have been in the Laketown area for over 60 years. Our mission is to provide high quality health and wellness services to assist your pet in living a longer, happier, and healthier life. We also provide our clients with access to cutting edge products and services as well as authoritative educational content focused on enhancing the bond between humans and animals.

Laketown Animal Hospital is proud to be an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Only about 15 percent of animal hospitals in the U.S. are AAHA accredited. To become accredited, LAH must regularly undergo inspections to ensure that we comply with the Association's hundreds of high standards for quality care.

Laketown Animal Hospital provides emergency services during operational hours. Our veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians are well trained in the care and monitoring of critically ill or injured patients. Please call our office with any emergency and we will do our best to accommodate. After hours emergency care is available at the AEC (Animal Emergency Clinic of Springfield) at 1333 Wabash Ave. AEC is open 6pm to 8 am M-Thursday, 6pm Friday to 8 am Monday, and all Holidays.
