Beede Outdoors Tower Hunt today!

03/20/2023

Today, I read a young new to hunting potential snow goose hunter asking about chasing snow geese on a popular migration page. Here were my thoughts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
30 years ago my brother said "You're an idiot if you want to hunt stinking snow geese". I hunted hard for too many years and dealt with the pains that come with it. Be prepared to sacrifice the following:

Large amounts of time with Family
Your Spine
Your Knees
Your hearing
Mental Stability at times
Hygiene
All of your monies
Long time friends
Your liver
Anything close to a sleep pattern
Your boots
All items of clothing worn
Your Dogs joints and health

It is the most brutal hunting there is. I've never hated an animal more. I've never hated wind, snow, rain, mud, ice more that when hunting snows. You'll find yourself silently wishing for the prop plane that just flew by to go 5 miles away and crash. Jet liners will become your enemy. You've now become a target for the lowest life forms on earth to come steal from. Muskrats will become instant enemies. Dust and dirt will become part of your daily diet. You'll start seeing ghost flocks off in the distance and run to the blind for nothing. You will lose your mind. You'll recognize a single snow who flew by earlier and took the whole flock but came back by to see if it could mess you up again. Every year you'll want more as if that's what will make em all come in but be met with the same results the next year. Your best friend with eff you over for a chance at killing more snow geese. When the season is approaching you will have so many friends. People begging to help you... When the season is over, your phone might has well be out of minutes. Your friends are all extremely busy. The spread is a ghost town of dust you are picking up with a handful of people you had to con to get out there.

Run. Wipe your mind. There's still time! Go now. Delete this group and go.

Absolutely! Lol

Who ever called me today from whatever anti hunt group... I am not afraid. I have a specific set of skills. Ha, I don't think you put a lot of thought into your threats.

I told this story to a guy upset that he couldn't bring his dog this morning. I'd say 95% of the time the answer to that is No. I wanted to share it here. The story of a great old Labrador from an unlikely source. Sometime 10 to 15 years ago I received a call from a guy in Iowa who was in a horrible chemical spill accident and had burned his lungs out. He was in the hospital on bed rest for over a year and could no longer hunt anything outside of an outfitter that was handicapped accessible. He asked me if he could bring his dog "Lou" and explained to me that he had no interest in anything other than getting his old lab a few more retrieves before he dies. I couldn't say no. This guys life pulled all of the heart strings. I gave him all of the details and recommended a day where the blind wasn't full and he agreed. The day of the hunt he shows up with this old fat half blind limping black lab. We make our introductions, go over safety, and he says "Lou, let's go. Get in the blind". The dog walked in to the spot where he had laid down a raggedy old blanket and settled in. I'm looking at this old sleeping dog and thinking about how glad I am that I let this man bring out his buddy and how I doubt this dog is going to even hear us shoot. Fast forward to shooting time! Sun's coming up and the snows are getting loud! Roosts hit the sky in every direction and the e caller is blasting to get their attention. Lou dog, as I've heard his master repeat in sentences now all morning hasn't budged. The first flock peels off and starts setting up on rotation #26. I tell the guys "Get Ready" and Lou's eye's fly open. He jumps to his feet like a puppy. I call the shot and the guys lay down a few birds. The door opens and Lou springs into action retrieving bird after bird and bringing them back to his master. I watch this whole scenario unfold and can't believe my eyes. When the birds are all retrieved his boss man says "Lou, let's go. Get in the blind" and he heads back to his blanket. The day went as I knew it would after seeing this dog in action on the first flock. At the end of the day this hard working chemical factory worker and his hard working old dog were both worn out. He said to me with tears in his eye's how special this was to him and how I could never be repaid for letting him bring Lou on his last hunt. I get goose bumps thinking about that conversation. Turned out that this was not Ole Lou Dog's last hunt. Lou managed to make it out the next 3 years and every year he shocked me the same way he did that very first time he jumped to his feet. The last 2 years Lou got to ride in the trailer to the blind with his master. The summer of the 4th year Lou Dog decided enough was enough and passed quietly in his sleep. I still see his master on hunts from time to time as we have become great friends but if it wasn't for his love for Lou we probably never would have met.
