When you understand the rest of the story, a tradition (Alaskan sled dog racing in this instance) takes on a whole new meaning.
For all of our clients that are lucky enough to have one of the many types of "cold weather appropriate" furbabies-just remind yourself of their awe inspiring heritage while you vacuum their fluff for what might be the third time today thanks to this insane heat.

In 1925, diphtheria affected an isolated village in Alaska. Due to the severe cold, it was not possible to transport the medicines by plane and ship, so the transport of the medicines to the town of Noma was organized with the help of mushers (guides or drivers of a dog sled team).

About 1120 miles (1800 kilometers) had to be covered in five days. There were several teams and they took turns on different sections. The Norwegian Gunnar Kasen and his main dog Balto were the first to bring the serum to the village.

It turned out that Kasen had not made a mistake in choosing the main dog, because when the team had an accident, Balto helped his musher, saving him from certain death.

When the storm reached its peak and visibility became low they crossed 85 km. Balto is considered a hero, and in 1925 a monument was erected to him in Central Park in New York.

He was truly a hero, like all the other dogs during this mission. However, the dog that did the most difficult part of the work was Togo who crossed the longest distance 260 miles (418 kilometers). He was part of Leonardo Seppala team of dogs. Togo is the husky, in the photo.

Togo was already known for his incredible leadership qualities, which he demonstrated again in this race.

The mission was successfully completed and these brave dogs saved numerous lives.

This is something that I think a lot of people struggle with, because the education from breeders, rescues, shelters, and vets typically doesn't include this. During the Covid lockdown I had a surprising number of new puppy/dog families call to ask if we could suggest any where for them to socialize their new family members. My typical response would be- anywhere you go, if dogs are allowed, then take them with you. "But there aren't usually other dogs there. What's the point of taking them with me?"
This chart lists so many different experiences that they would have if they just tagged a long for a few rides or walks a week.

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

Absolutely, and read her comments, I love how she explains mental resiliency.
Crating is never just about locking up your pup, or "caging" them like some people might think. It truly is a fabulous tool in training a companion to be emotionally stable. It's also extremely beneficial to first responders and emergency personnel in the event of a crisis. Transporting someone's fur babies is difficult enough when time is limited, trying to contain an anxious, scared, even fear-reactive dog is a safety risk to them and the humans involved.
If you had to evacuate, were immobilized by illness or injury, or just weren't able to return to your home- would a stranger be able to crate and carry your pup to safety for you without getting bit or traumatizing your pup in the process? It's something to think about, especially with how uncertain the world can be these days

Yes to this.

I walked into someone's house, once, and everything was s**c and span clean, gorgeously decorated and looked stunning.
But it felt...cold.
As I looked around, I realized, there was no life in her house. No cat curled up on the couch. No dog sleeping by the door. Not even a houseplant, anywhere in sight. A cold brick wall fenced in her yard, blocking the view of the pasture with grazing cows, that I had driven by seconds ago. Her yard held an immaculate inground pool, surrounded by concrete and artificial turf. All very magazine worthy and picture perfect.

I was never so happy to return to my cozy little home, that day. Much smaller, than my new aquatint's house, but, oh so full of life. Tail wags greeted me at the door. My cat, immediately sat with me on the sofa. Birds were happily pecking at the bird feeder that hung outside my window.
I realized, then, how happy I was, living with all these simple joys. I realized how much I needed them, to make me feel whole.
We are all different....and that is just fine! But as for me, I know I can't be truly happy unless I have at least one dog, cat or horse sharing my life with me. It's simply part of who I am.

Not a Malinois owner, but I do love the breed and have 2 close relatives, the Dutch and high-drive line German Shepherds. I truly hope Channing Tatum does a PSA regarding the Malinois in his movie and tries to head off some of the inevitable damage the breed will encounter.

There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

From the bottom of my heart, I love this breed. I know what's coming and so do the shelters and rescues

So sweet...I wish more people understood the importance of responsible breeding. And I wish those that don't breed for the betterment of the breed itself would stop. Breeding a male to some random b*tch because "he's too beautiful not to breed " is not being responsible. Health testing, pedigree research, and temperament of parents/ older siblings are all super important when you pick a puppy-so why would you breed a dog without taking all of that into consideration?

The legacy every breeder leaves ❤️

When we were kids, we had a beautiful, gentle dog named Spits. He was our first dog having only had cats prior. Spits was a really good-natured, goofy boy. Leggy. He galloped when he ran. He smiled all the time. He had a really long tongue. My sister and I adored this dog. When I'd get home from sch...
