DAY 7 - Garlic, Onions, Leeks And/Or Chives

Besides making your dinner taste great, onions, garlic, leeks and chives can cause serious medical problems for your dog. Clinical signs of illness, such as vomiting, can occur soon after your dog eats any of these, but the full onset of signs may take several days to appear.

In most cases, consumption causes gastroenteritis or inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Irritation of the mouth, drooling, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.

Severe signs occur when the ingestion of Allium spp. causes damage to red blood cell membranes. A low red blood cell count (anemia) can cause an increased heart rate, elevated respiratory rate and effort, weakness, discolored urine, kidney damage, collapse, and even death.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested one of these Alliums, please contact the Per Poison Helpline. They will be able to instruct you if you need to seek treatment for your pet!

DAY 8 - Xylitol

Xylitol is a sweetener that is toxic to dogs and can be fatal even in small amounts. It's often found in sugar-free products like gum, toothpaste, and some peanut butters, and is also known as birch sugar or wood sugar.

Symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs include:
Vomiting
Decreased activity
Weakness
Difficulty walking or standing
Shaking or seizures
Coma
Liver failure
Bleeding problems

Symptoms can begin within 20 minutes of ingestion, but can take up to 12 hours to develop. Small dogs are more at risk than larger dogs.

If you suspect your pet has eaten any products or foods containing xylitol, call the Pet Poison Helpline IMMEDIATELY and get to your closest veterinary hospital or emergency clinic.

Two indoor cats in Los Angeles County, Calif., have died and another in the same household tested positive for influenza A, and people who had contact with the cats have been offered antiviral drugs and are being monitored for signs of illness. The cats are not known to have consumed raw milk but might have eaten influenza-contaminated raw meat. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-12-18/la-cats-h5n1-bird-flu-infection

1 year old golden retriever. 2 1/4” nail. We don’t have tetanus shots for dogs and cats because in general they don’t get tetanus that often. Livestock is a different story. Removed the nail, flushed the tract with a tomcat urinary catheter and put him on antibiotics and NSAIDs.
