The hardest part of zoo life and caring for animals is having to share the difficult news of a death. Our hearts are heavy today as we share the news that our eldest klipspringer, Saba, passed away earlier this month at 25 years old.

Over the past year, Saba had been experiencing hoof and joint issues in his front leg, which led to mobility challenges. Despite our team’s best efforts to provide him with regular hoof trims, joint supplements, and pain management, his condition continued to worsen. After careful consideration of Saba’s quality of life and comfort, our animal care and veterinary teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him to prevent further suffering.

Born at the Dallas Zoo in 1999, Saba was the oldest klipspringer in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, far surpassing the species’ average life expectancy of 15–17 years in the wild. After retiring from his public habitat in 2022, Saba enjoyed his golden years behind the scenes at the Zoo.

He was full of personality and his quirks delighted us all. He loved sparring with large branches and had a particular fondness for mulberry branches, honeysuckle, Cheerios, blueberries, and craisins. The day before Saba’s passing, his zoologists made sure he got to enjoy his favorite mulberry branches one last time.

Over his incredible 25 years, Saba touched the lives of countless zoologists and became a favorite among many. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who cared for him.

Acupuncture for animals? Absolutely!

Meet Adam, our 18-year-old perentie monitor, who receives special acupuncture treatments. Adam has entered his golden years with some age-related challenges, including arthritis. But thanks to our dedicated animal care team, he’s getting the extra attention he deserves to stay comfortable and active.

Each month, Adam receives acupuncture treatments designed to ease his stiffness and improve his mobility. Tiny needles are strategically placed on specific points of his skin, offering targeted relief and helping him move with greater ease. He also receives advanced laser therapy, which further alleviates discomfort and enhances his overall well-being.

At the Dallas Zoo, our commitment to care ensures that every animal receives the best possible quality of life throughout their entire lives. With these treatments, we're thrilled to see Adam thriving in his golden years!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Tullah, our beloved 14-year-old female giant anteater. She was humanely euthanized on Saturday, November 16, following a decline in her health.

Our teams started observing a change in Tullah's health, including her appetite. Our veterinary and animal care teams closely monitored her condition and worked tirelessly to provide her with the best care possible. Despite these efforts, her health began to decline in recent weeks, and the team made the incredibly difficult decision to euthanize her.

Since arriving at the Dallas Zoo in 2013, Tullah captured the hearts of everyone who met her. Her zoologists recall her playful antics, from splashing in the sprinklers and lounging in her pool to flapping her tail and using it as a blanket during naps. She was often seen soaking up the sun or enjoying a relaxing bath in her pool.

Tullah was deeply loved and cared for every step of the way. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. If you have photos or memories of Tullah, please share them in the comments below.
