West Indian whistling ducklings
We’re thrilled to announce the hatching of FOUR adorable West Indian whistling ducklings – for the first time at the Dallas Zoo! These fluffballs hatched earlier in September and have been busy growing and thriving behind the scenes as they prepare to explore their habitat at the Flamingo Pond in ZooNorth.
West Indian whistling ducks are among the rarest ducks in the Americas, known for their unique calls that range from distinctive high-pitched shrills to clear, squeaky whistles. This successful hatching marks a significant milestone in our commitment to protecting this near-threatened species.
Primates, potions, and plenty of spooky fun. 👻

Hoot Hoot
HOOT HOOT! 👀 Have you spotted our adorable owlets yet? Our spectacled owl duo, Rio and Isla, welcomed two adorable chicks in August. The proud parents have done an amazing job raising their little ones, who have now officially spread their wings and fledged! With their soft white fluff and signature ‘spectacles,’ these charming owlets are hard to miss. Keep your eyes peeled for these fluffy cuties on your next visit to the Zoo!

Happy Birthday, Nea! 🦒🧡
This not-so-little lady recently turned two, and we rolled out some towering tasty treats to help her celebrate the big day in style. Help us show this fabulous giraffe some birthday love in the comments below!
HAPPY #INTERNATIONALMANEDWOLFDAY 🦊 🐾
Check out Scarlet using her exceptionally strong sense of smell to locate some tasty treats her zoologists buried. Maned wolves can detect prey like rodents and other small mammals, even when they are hidden in tall grass or underground.
Maned wolves play a vital role in their natural habitat of South America by dispersing seeds and controlling pests.
Since 1965, AZA-accredited zoos, like the Dallas Zoo, have helped protect genetic diversity among maned wolves and safeguard their population from extinction. The AZA SAFE maned wolf species program is dedicated to protecting populations in the wild, focusing on Argentina, home to the southernmost group of the species.
Join us in showing some love to these "foxes on stilts"!

Meet Mopane
Our newest long-legged wonder has a name! Meet Mopane (mo-PAW-nee)! 🦒
Already reaching new heights of cuteness, Mopane was named after a species of trees native to Namibia, Africa, which our keepers encountered during a conservation expedition. Mopane trees are vital in sustaining giraffe populations during dry and winter months. Their distinctive, butterfly-shaped leaves resembled hoof prints to our team, inspiring the name of our newest addition.
Since his arrival in August, Mopane has already begun to exhibit a unique personality, closely mirroring the behaviors of his mother, Chrystal. A natural observer, he prefers to watch from a distance before engaging and enjoys spending time with his big sister, Kora.
Meet Mopane and the rest of the herd at the Gregg Hudson Giants of the Savanna!
