Happy Earth Day everyone!

Originating from Ireland the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a true earth dog.

Wheaten Terriers are quite sensitive characters. They're protectors and very family-oriented. They are charming, honest, true, decent, kind, thoughtful, dutiful, and completely grounded, except when they are jumping. They can be quite a soft, sensitive soul that picks up on their owners feelings but tough at the same time, as many a cat will tell you.

Wheatens are great watchdogs as they bark to alert you of visitors or intruders but some will say they are not great guard dogs as they are everyone’s friend, even possible thieves and robbers.

The Wheaten coat changes throughout its life both in color and texture. If they have a wound their coat will grow in dark red which is called wound hair.

They should have a fall not bangs. No self-respecting Wheaten has bangs.

People who own one will tell you they traded vacuuming dog hair and using lint brushes for scissors, slicker brushes and combs. All Wheaten owners need to learn how to groom or at the very least brush. The Wheaten coat is very high maintenance.

Happy Earth Day everyone!

Nice to Meet You:
SUSAN MCGEE, VP-SCWTCGSL
If you have been in the Wheaten world for any amount of time you have probably met Susan McGee in some part of the country. In addition to serving as Membership Chair for SCWTCA, Susan is the VP for our club! Susan has shown her Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers in conformation in addition to training them in agility, nose work, barn hunt and obedience. Susan, breeder/owner/handler, won Best of Breed at Westminster Kennel Club dog show in February 2015 with GCH Mirikal Double Top Breakout NA, NAJ. But do you know about Susan’s passion for helping people? Susan also serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for The Grooming Project. The Grooming Project is the pilot program of Empowering the Parent to Empower the Child (EPEC), a 501c3 nonprofit in Kansas City, MO devoted to helping impoverished families become self-reliant through job training in the high-demand, high-pay trade of pet grooming. The Grooming Project’s education-based approach not only financially empowers single parents in poverty through equipping them with credentials in a competitive market, but it also ensures that they focus on improving their family’s future as a whole. When recently asked about her involvement with The Grooming Project, Susan said “I love serving on this board, it has been very rewarding.” Take a minute to visit The Grooming Project at https://thegroomingproject.org or visit their page by searching . Susan, on behalf of the SCWTCGSL thank you for all you do!
