Hey food eaters. It has been a serious minute since the last post, but things have been moving along during these cold days. We have been a little slow on installing our heaters so some crops took on frost damage, but we're getting there. We also installed some T-5 lights to extend our day-length and DLI. Enjoy!

Excavation to remove the Eastern Cedar trees. Eastern Cedar is known to be invasive in much of Missouri. Invasive may one way to describe it, but another perspective is to see cedar as a pioneer plant. This pioneer plant is one of the first ones on the scene after the land has been worked/grazed/cleared. It also serves as a natural landmark of the keylines along this hill-slope. Keylines are critical growing points along the slope that naturally blends water infiltration and nutrient holding capacities to create great growing microhabitats. The cedar mulch will be used in our orchard and future food forest planting.

A new project is underway! We are excited to help Cedar Creek clear several Eastern Cedar trees and expose natural key lines along this hill-slope. This project is in conjunction with the Apple Orchard just up the hill. We will expand downslope with an interactive food forest that will, in turn, expand the hiking experience through Cedar Creek grounds.

It has been years since the last update, but things have been moving along at the farm like the hands of time.

Lights were added for our young lettuce greens. And the weather is cooling down so now our lettuce wont bolt easily!

Hey everyone, I want to propose something...To pivot from just posting updates, I want open the floor for a forum.

A forum for questions about everything and anything about plants...and More!

I have had the pleasure to work in many different facets of plant life, environmental science, non-profit urban farming, the landscaping industry, green construction, etc. So I want to ask anyone who is brave enough to ask me anything regarding what I have experience in. Feel free to post pictures too.

Questions could be about casual gardening tips, or...
What weeds can I eat?
Is my plant dead or dormant?
Which plants are companions to other plants?
How do I manage the water/storm run-off on my property? What kind of tree is in my backyard?
How do I know a tree is dead?
Which insects are good to have around?
What does a live grasshopper taste like?
How to keep deer away from things?
How does hydroponics / Aquaponics work? How can I get started on a very limited budget?
Which plants/fruits are good to have around while sick?
How do I build a pyramid greenhouse? or a small cold frame?
Where are cool spots/farms to volunteer with in the St. louis area?
How do can you capture water?

Here goes nothing...

Some June updates: Garden is looking good, filling out, and herbs ready to be harvested. This heat is oppressive and the plants are a bit stressed, but they are settling in.

More rafts arrived for the aquaponics system! Now we just need to fill them up with tasty lettuce.

Oh, and a nice showing of the heirloom wheat crop we planted last summer. Something that I have learned about wheat - the seeds need to lay dormant for a period of time.

Wow, these guys (and girls?) are getting pretty big. Forever young little ones.

Now for some Modern Farm updates:)

Jared Hundelt whipped up an impressive, decoupled plumbing system for the overall system. Major props! Now, we are now at 95% there. Nutrients go in and then the plants (which are looking pretty ready). .

Garden Updates and musings: the rows are re-formed and black plastic mulch is laid down to increase productivity and decrease plant competition. Seeds are almost all planted.

Alfalfa is looking good as a boarder crop under the Elderberry.

Greenhouse Updates!! Moving along now with filling the deep water beds with water after installing most of the plumbing. Also, we are just about finished with our ebb n' flow beds as well!
Next up: install electricity, install pumps and HAFs (horizontal airflow fans), finish plumbing, finish insulating, shade screen, thrips screen, and I think thats it? About 88% there! Oh, and start seeds:)

I just want to share this incredible project by . Riparian restoration is something that needs more attention. As I drive through SW Missouri en rout to the farm, I see more and more eutrophication, erosion, and general riparian malaise. Perhaps this could happen to some of the beautiful creeks / rivers along the Missouri River in Missouri??

UPDATE: So more of the frame is up. This includes more joists, brackets, and rafters. Also! we have completely finished just one of the three concrete block walls that will be holding in our giant floating raft pond and have started the second. Pictures to come, and maybe a video?
