Fun Fact: The picture on the left is “old growth” lumber. Likely 30 plus years old. Notice how close together the growth rings are. The picture on the right is “new growth.” When old forests are clear cut and harvested, new saplings are planted. There is no canopy over the new saplings. They grow very fast and thus the growth rings are far apart. The wood between the growth rings is soft. Bugs like the soft material and the soft material is prone to rot and decay. The “old growth” lumber is much stronger and durable than the “new growth” lumber. Did you ever count the rings to see how old a tree was when you were a kid?
