Testimonial Tuesday featuring assistance dog team Krista + Duo Dog Shandy.
"Shandy has become such a staple in my life. She performs so well as a hearing dog, alerting me to various sounds such as a door knock or the alarm, which is her absolute favorite, as this marks a new day and breakfast time (haha). She is also an incredible companion and has witnessed me during all my high and low moments in this life. When I laugh, she wags her tail and feeds off the excitement; when I cough, she always turns back to look at me and make sure I'm ok; when I cry, she knows I just need a moment and curls up right next to me for comfort. She has also been an incredible travel buddy and one of our absolute favorite pastimes is exploring new places together. I'll say it over and over again, but I am so grateful to Duo Dogs for not only giving me more independence and confidence with a hearing dog, but for also giving me the soul dog I never knew I needed."

Summer is here, and so is the heat! Keep your dog safe and cool by following these tips.
Be aware of heatstroke symptoms: excessive panting,
difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, dehydration, drooling, lethargy, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and seizures.
Prevent heatstroke: walk or exercise your dog in the AM or PM when temperatures are cooler. Ensure your dog has shade outdoors and keep them indoors in extreme heat.
Ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water.
Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.
On a 70-degree day with windows cracked, temperatures inside
a car can reach 100+ degrees within 20 minutes.
Avoid walking your dog on hot pavement.
Walk through grass, on painted crosswalks, in the shade, or use dog boots.
Don't leave your dog unsupervised around a pool or body of water.
Ensure your dog wears a flotation device on docks or boats. Rinse off your dog after swimming. Don't allow your dog to drink pool/lake water.
Don’t shave a double-coated dog.
Layers of the coat protect a dog from overheating and sunburn.
Keep your dog away from fertilizer and insecticides.
Store citronella candles, tiki torches, and chemicals out of your dog's reach.
Never use fireworks around dogs.
Firework exposure can result in burns or trauma, and some dogs
may get scared, disoriented, or lost.
Plan indoor activities.
Use enrichment toys like frozen Kongs, snuffle mats, and treat dispensers, or brush up on your dog’s obedience skills with a
training session!
What are some things your dog enjoys doing in the summer? Let us know in the comments.

Because not all patients have experience with larger dogs, some can take a while to warm up to Duo Dog Kia. After observing Kia interacting with others, this patient warmed up to him too. Therapists had Kia sit on the patient’s right side so she could pet Kia. The new friendship deepened while our patient’s inattention to and weakness on her right side improved. Our patient’s smile signals how she feels about Kia now.
