Tiffany says:
For anyone who has visited the shelter over the past couple of years, you've likely seen Alexa in one of the kennels. Like many people in our community, Alexa's person dealt with frequent housing insecurity and ended up homeless. Because of this, Alexa has been in and out of the shelter, and unfortunately, this stay is permanent...

Until you meet her, fall in love, and she finds her forever home with you!

Alexa loves to go on walks and get in all the sniffs. She's generally a chill lady and sits politely for treats. With her previous owner, Alexa lived with a cat and another shelter dog, her brother Axel, who fortunately found a great home.

Our next duo this CHEWSday is Brian Blase and Baby Boo.
Brian says:
I spent some time this weekend getting to know my new CHEW buddy Baby Boo better, and I absolutely love her! She is super stressed inside her kennel, so she comes out very hot. So far, we have been working a lot on her leash walking skills and doing a lot of engage-disengage. The first 10 minutes or so of a walk with her are a little challenging, but the longer she’s out, the easier it becomes to get her to check in for snacks, and she actually does some loose leash walking after awhile. I’m confident that with some more practice, she has the potential to do it consistently!

Today, after our walk we went to the yard for about 20 minutes of play time and she totally loves the yard! She was really into playing fetch with a stuffy, sniffing all over, and getting lots and lots of snuggles. This girl is just so friendly and playful and such a sweetie. And just look at that face - she’s also ridiculously cute!

Good afternoon from our next CHEWSday pair, Renah Jones and her CHEW buddy Dame! ❤️
Renah says :
We had such a fun outing to Forest Park on Friday.
This girl has absolutely been overlooked during her time at CARE. She has not been out of the shelter for one single night since July. She's such a sweetheart. My heart aches for her because the shelter is no place for an 8 year old.
If you are considering a foster Dame would LOVE the opportunity to be in a home, even for just a few days. She's so sweet and happy, and excited for adventures and your attention. This would also help CARE get info on how she does in a home, which could help her get adopted!

❤️ Dog friendly/selective (had a rough & rowdy playstyle in playgroup)
❤️ walks well on leash, esp after getting some energy out
❤️ loves snacks, but cheese seems to be her fave
❤️ does well in the car

Next up this CHEWSDAY morning is Emma Tuttle and Cuddle bug.
Here's what Emma has to say:

This adorable dude came in so terrified. There were days he needed carried back into the building or a slow moving treat trail with canned food to support him.

He is now comfortable with his caregivers and the environment but the shelter stress is setting in 😢. Bug’s stress and frustration is coming out in jumping up and mouthing at the leash. We started a support plan where he has a big chew (granola busy bones are his fave right now) to begin with. If he gets tired of that, then we treat bowl to keep him moving forward and paws on the ground. He is making tremendous progress and has been doing so awesome fading out the treat bowling. He’s been checking in while keeping paws down, gets a treat, and keeps on moving! He’s even been able to begin to work on waiting and sitting for a treat when he checks in. I’m so proud of this young guy!

We had so much fun in the yard the other night! He loves a good energy drain mid brain work!

Shaq was an absolute BALL at my house over the weekend. Slept quietly in his crate, went potty outside, loved having his human shelter friends over, and truly just soaked up being in a home. He desperately needs out of the shelter by a foster or adopter and has so much to give!!!

🚨URGENT: 14 DOGS on their way to the shelter! 🐾🚨

Today, we were faced with an incredibly sad reality. Fourteen dogs were found in a home where their owner had passed away. These loyal companions are now without their beloved caregiver and are in urgent need of help.

The dogs were left alone during a time of great loss, and they are now confused and scared. Our hearts ache for them as we work to provide the care, love, and support they so desperately need.

We are reaching out to our community for assistance. These dogs will require medical attention, These Boxer mixes are arriving soon, and we’ve been told that most of them are friendly. However, we’re already at 188% capacity, and we desperately need your help to save these pups!

With rain and cold weather expected until tomorrow, the only available space for them will be in outside kennels. This is not a safe or comfortable situation for them!

Please, we urgently need fosters, even just for a week or two, to help us make space for these dogs. Your kindness could make all the difference in their lives!

We are open until 7 PM today, and every moment counts. Let’s come together to give these dogs the warm and loving environment they deserve. Please share this message and help us save these precious lives! 🙏❤️🏡

Gretel truly needs help getting out of the shelter. She requires someone who can help her build confidence so she can thrive during meet and greets. Given her age and current weight, it’s risky to put her through surgery to fix her cherry eyes without a solid support plan in place. We need to ensure that someone is available to provide medication support for her after surgery.

Unfortunately, we lack the resources at the shelter to care for her after hours, which makes it even more urgent for her to find a foster home as soon as possible. Gretel deserves a chance to heal and feel safe in a loving environment. Please consider opening your heart and home to her. She needs us now more than ever.🙏

Meet Squeaker!

Squeaker was a breeze to leash up, and with treats and praise, he's super responsive and easy to redirect when he’s comfortable. He’s learning to feel more at ease around other dogs, and with some distance, you can absolutely help him thrive.

Squeaker is an amazing pitty who is ready to show just how lovable and incredible he can be with a little love and patience.

🌱SPROUT🌱 is in desperate need of a loving home! This sweet boy struggles at the shelter, but as soon as he’s out, he transforms into a completely different dog. He recently had a brief reprieve from the shelter, and during that time, we discovered just how incredible Sprout really is.

Sprout is potty-trained and non-destructive, even when left home alone. He’s a loving cuddle bug who enjoys watching Bluey, going for walks around the neighborhood, and smelling the flowers at Forest Park. He is such a good boy, always checking in with his handler on walks, and is both smart and very treat-motivated. Sprout loves giving and receiving kisses and will follow you everywhere like a devoted shadow. He’s the sweetest boy, great with kids, and even enjoys bath time—especially when pampered with coconut oil on his nose and paws.

Unfortunately, Sprout is now back at the shelter, and his spirit is crushed 💔. He is incredibly stressed, constantly staring at the door, waiting for someone to come and take him away. When he’s brought back to his room, he throws himself at the door, begging not to be left alone, pleading to be let out 😔. It’s truly heartbreaking to witness.

Time is running out for Sprout. Witnessing him in constant struggle everyday is hard to see, hurting himself by throwing himself at the kennel door is hard to see. Please, come meet Sprout, take him home, and let him show you just how good of a boy he can be.

Lexi girl has her tail amputation today. We went for a long walk and hang sesh in the play yard this morning before we begin to prep her for surgery. She will need a home to recover in as soon as tonight or tomorrow — can you be that home? Updates to come! 💙

We are thrilled to announce that our first-ever pub crawl was a tremendous success! While we’re still finalizing the totals by accounting for expenses and awaiting the final payment from our sponsors, it’s clear that our volunteers, Draiy Buckles, Katie Plasmeier and Lisa Newlin, who organized this event raised a significant amount of money—much more than they have anticipated.
