We are seeking to hire two Veterinary Assistant positions at CARE STL, with both full-time and part-time opportunities available.
Summary of the Position:
The Veterinary Assistant at CARE STL plays a crucial role in providing daily medical care for animals in our shelter. This team member works closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to ensure animals receive compassionate and timely care. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, comfortable working in a fast-paced shelter environment, and deeply committed to animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the veterinarian and veterinary technician with exams, treatments, and surgeries
Administer medications, vaccines, and preventatives under supervision
Monitor animals before, during, and after medical procedures
Maintain clean and organized treatment, surgery, and recovery areas
Restrain animals safely and humanely for exams and treatments
Enter accurate medical records and assist with updating medical charts
Support intake exams for new shelter animals and assist with diagnostics
Communicate with staff regarding animal health status and concerns
Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure proper stocking
Follow all safety, sanitation, and infection control protocols
Provide humane handling and care to animals with varying temperaments and medical needs
Qualifications:
Previous experience in a veterinary, shelter, or animal care setting preferred
Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a high-stress environment
Comfort with computers and basic data entry
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work on feet for extended periods
Passion for the mission of CARE STL and animal welfare
Schedule:
Must be available to work weekends and some holidays
The schedule may vary depending on shelter needs and emergencies
