STL SHOWED UP AGAIN today — and because of you, another 18 dogs got out of the cold. That’s 31 dogs safe and warm so far. 🥹💙

But our heat is still only partially working, and tomorrow is huge:
We need at least 15 more dogs to leave so we can move every remaining dog to the warmer side of the building. Right now, too many are still waking up in freezing temps.

If you can foster even for a few days, or if you’ve been thinking about adopting, tomorrow is the day. Every single dog moved out gives another dog a warm, safe place to sleep.

And if you’ve had your eye on Mall Cop… he would VERY much like to retire from guarding the cold side of the building and go to a cozy couch instead.

🐮💙 Buffalo Bill & His Tiny Teef 💙🐮
If you’ve been searching for a sweet, expressive, slightly-goofy, extremely-loveable brindle house hippo… congratulations. You’ve found him.

Buffalo Bill is out here serving FACE — and also teef. The tiniest. The cutest. The ones that pop out when he’s concentrating very hard on being a good boy.

He’s ready for warm blankets, belly rubs, and a home where his teef can finally live their best life.

Come meet him at CARE STL

🐾‼️Shelter Heating Update‼️🐾

First: We are opening earlier at noon today! Please come and take a pup home.

Second:

The technicians who came out today were able to fix the heat in the front part of the building, and that area is now warming properly. They’ll be returning next week with a brand-new unit for the back section of the building — the area that is currently cold--around 35-40 degrees there. We have at least 30 dogs in that section, and we are struggling to keep it warm until the new unit is installed.

We did explore temporary heating options. Electric heat would normally be the easiest solution, but the location of our electrical main breaker makes it extremely difficult to plug in industrial heating equipment. It would require running large cables across the building through cold, high-traffic areas, creating a serious safety hazard for both people and animals.

Propane heaters were also discussed, but they require proper ventilation — something we do not have the ability to set up safely in our current space.

For those who haven’t been to the shelter, our dog area is an open 8,500 sq. ft. warehouse space with 61 metal kennels, 9 wire crates, and 8 large crates. While the heating works on the other side of the building, the broken unit impacts the section closest to two frequently used doors for dog walks.

We’re doing everything we can within safe limits to keep our dogs comfortable and safe. Thank you to everyone adopting, fostering, and sharing our posts — your support truly helps us get animals out of the cold. ❤️🐾

Come see Mendoza — truly one of the friendliest, goofiest shepherds you’ll ever meet.
He’s about 7 years old, around 80 lbs, and has that gentle, old-soul energy that just pulls you in. Mendoza is happy, affectionate, and bonds deeply with his people. He’s calm, lower-energy, and honestly just wants to hang out and be your guy.

He’s also been so good with other dogs here — he enjoys easy, lighter play that matches his age and vibe. He’s housetrained, doesn’t seem to stress when left alone, and has been nothing but a sweetheart for staff and volunteers.

His one little quirk? Mendoza can be a bit protective over treats (and maybe toys), especially with brand-new people. It’s super common and totally workable — just something to keep in mind. Because of that, we think he’d be happiest in a home without young kids.

And right now, with our heat still out in the dog building, we are doing everything we can to get as many dogs as possible into warm homes — even temporarily. Mendoza is one of our LifeSaver dogs, so having a foster or adopter step up for him would mean everything.

🚨 ST. LOUIS — WE STILL NEED YOU 🚨

This morning our dog building is sitting at about 34 degrees, and the heat is still out. Sixty dogs are waking up cold and shivering in kennels that feel barely above freezing.

This is Swivel, bundled up in the office because he was too cold in the dog building. He’s doing his best to stay warm — but what he really needs is a home. And he’s not the only one.

A generous company is coming today to try to get the heat working, but right now our priority is getting these dogs into warm, safe homes as quickly as possible. They need people. They need comfort. They need the community that always shows up.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, today is the day. A week helps. A few days help. Even one dog out of the cold makes a difference.

ST. LOUIS, YOU SHOWED UP FOR OUR DOGS TONIGHT. 😭💙

We stayed open two hours past closing because people just kept walking through the doors after our SOS post. One after another, dogs got bundled up, walked out, and taken into warm homes — even if just for a week. We are overwhelmed in the best possible way.

Thank you. Truly. Tonight was a reminder of what this community can do when we ask for help. 🥹

And we’re not done yet — tomorrow is a new day and more dogs still need out.

If you’re thinking about fostering or adopting, Socks would love to be in a home before Christmas. 🎄💙 He’s ready whenever you are.

🚨 SOS — OUR HEAT IS OUT 🚨
Omg, our heat is completely out in the dog building and they can’t fix it until next week. Our dogs are literally sitting in the cold RIGHT NOW.

We need fosters immediately — even just for one week while we get the heat repaired. If you can take any dog temporarily, please come to CARE STL as soon as you can.

We just need to get them warm. 💙
