Art of Aquaria just got a bunch of new discus!

These awesome are one of our favorites, although they have some special requirements (clean, warmer water) they are peaceful and well suited to community tanks, get relatively large, and come in a rainbow of colors!

Due to their special breeding habits (parents produce an extra nutritional coating on their skin and both feed and protect their babies), their need for clean water, and their relatively slow growing nature, these fish generally come with a higher price tag.

Live foods have been known for some time to be one of the key components to stimulate many species of fish to breed, exhibit wild hunting/eating behaviors, and gain the most vibrant color possible.

The species of that we have available are all approachable in regards to care and generally only take a few minutes each week to maintain a reliable and healthy self-produced food source for the home aquarium.

You betta-believe that at Art of Aquaria we love ! And when you love someone, you try to treat them right.

One thing that always irritated us about the big box stores was walking in to see a shelf packed with 40 bettas in almost shot glass sized plastic cups, 10 of them only half full of water, 5 of them dead due to mistreatment.

Remember, when you “rescue” a fish from one of these stores that choose to keep their animals in poor conditions, you vote with your dollar for them to continue exactly what they’re doing. This actually incentivizes them to continue poor husbandry practices, and puts more thimble-sized cup money into their pockets to abuse more fish!

That’s why we built out this custom “betta hotel” system with rimless aquariums, complete with and to house these guys (and gals) comfortably while they await their forever homes!

We were able to get some great looking in like these salvinia, hornwort, locally grown as well as a great selection of , and a trial run of some very fancy . (Swipe for the list)

Floating plants make a great addition to many aquariums with their relatively quick nitrogen removal abilities and resistance to being disturbed by many species of fish that will usually eat or “redecorate” substrate-bound aquatic plants. The roots and undersides of floaters also provide a whole new section of healthy biofilms for grazers like aquatic shrimp to feed on.

Locally bred in stock today at Art of Aquaria!

No, we haven’t gone back to carrying saltwater, these beautifully colored fish are fully freshwater! In the wild they are found in rainforest streams in Eastern Papua New Guinea. Perfect for smaller tanks (although not shrimp safe), they max out at about 3 inches. Their gorgeous pinks and yellows intensify as they grow up, as does the peculiar “hump head” on the males.

We are LOVING the new atomizer on our and tank. You can add these to almost any aquarium/paludarium to create a stunning fog effect on the top of the water. These came in 2 days ago and we are already almost sold out.

Also note the sleek and completely unique custom welded aquarium stand. These can ONLY be found at and are handcrafted in house by our very own DJ. Several standard dimensions/designs are available to order, and we can custom fabricate and create unique designs to fit any tank or space.

We have locally bred in stock today at AoA!

We are always looking to work with local breeders at Art of Aquaria. We not only believe in supporting our fish breeders, but fish and other critters raised in our local water adapt readily to our customers tanks with less stress than fish raised in different parameters. We also believe our local partners take better measures against disease and tend to have healthier fish overall!

These little dudes (Epiplatys annulatus) are found throughout in the wild, in lowland swamps and tannin stained streams. They max out at just over 1 inch and are a great addition to . Like many killifish, they are known jumpers so a tank lid is recommended!

Here at Art of Aquaria we’re stoked to announce some great additions to our lineup of with !

These huge bunches came in looking big and healthy, and a feature we love is that they are grown fully submerged. As opposed to many aquatic plants that are actually grown immersed (only partially in water) submerged grown plants are far less likely to melt/drop leaves and will acclimate better and faster to the average home aquarium!

We have !

This nano fish is by far one of our most requested species. They reach a near microscopic 0.75 inches adult size, once comfortable in a heavily planted aquarium they tend to be front and center in the viewing area of the tank, they have stunning color, and they get along with other peaceful small fish and even and shrimp!

We only received about 50 this order, we have a few things in the works to start getting bigger orders of this species.

We got in some exceptional looking males and some females, as well as some really nice betta males in this week!

These guys are the perfect fish for the impatient aquarium owner who wants to buy a tank and have a fish in it “today”. Betta are in the anabantoid family along with gourami, which means that they have a lung-like “labrynth organ” and can breathe air from the surface. That means that, unlike most fish, they don’t have to breathe the water and will be far less affected by fluctuations in water parameters associated with the tank cycling. So once the water is dechlorinated, you can add a betta.

You won’t find any sad fish floating in shot glass sized cups in Art of Aquaria. We believe in displaying these gorgeous fish in comfortable display tanks that allow some room to swim and show off their finnage. Remember, when you “rescue” a fish from a box store, unfortunately all this does is perpetuate the system that makes them profit off of the practices we don’t like to see.

Using state of the art analytics, we have come to the conclusion that our customers don’t mind sleeping in!

In order to adjust our hours to the typical customer’s schedule, make picking up orders from the airport easier, and consolidate operating hours for a potential new team member (now hiring notice coming soon, send resume and animal care/aquarium experience to our email) we have shaved off a couple of our early hours.

Our new hours:

Mon-Wed 5-9
Thurs-Sat 12-9
Sun 12-6

We made the decision to keep our late hours and stay open until 9pm Mon-Sat. We have received lots of feedback thanking us for being open in the evenings for the folks that work until early evening most days. We apologize for any inconvenience or rigamarole this causes, as always our goal is to better serve our customers and set the store up for success!

Hardscape room.

From day one moving the store one thing we knew we needed to provide for our customers was this .

We’ve seen these in action at other stores around the country and they’re great for designing the layout of your tank while you’re still in the store surrounded by options for . Come in, slow down and take some time to try out a few of our hardscape options in The Box. The final design will allow you to slide the plexiglass divider to your exact tank size in order to prop driftwood etc against the sides!

Well, it’s official. We have fish in tanks, we have fish on the walls, and we are almost ready!
