How fantastic is it that we are entering back into the warmer Springtime weather, soon to be full on Summer? With such great weather, comes those pesky Mosquitos šŸ¦Ÿ.

Did you know that mosquitos are a hazard for your catsšŸˆ and dogsšŸ• ? Mosquitos šŸ¦Ÿ not only deliver that annoying itchy bite but, they also carry Heartworm. If not prevented, or tested for and treated, heartworm can be fatal to your fur baby.

The Cycle of Heartworm happens when a Mosquitos bites a heartworm infected cat or dog and ingestes the larvae. The mosquitos šŸ¦Ÿ then goes off and has another meal. This meal is on your cat or dog. That bite releases the Heartworm larvae under the skin into the tissue of your cat or dog and the cycle begins. Below is a chart provided by The American Heartworm Society for a visual of how this Cycle starts and progresses.

With annual testing, and monthly prevention, you can keep your precious fur children healthy and protected against heartworm disease.

Have you had your pet tested within this year? Do you give your cats and dogs monthly prevention against heartworm?

If not, if your due, or overdue, please call 912-882-8886 or go to www.camdenvetclinic.com and request your appt via the Telehealth blue and white chat bubble on bottom right side of web page. Get your fur family scheduled for their annual exam and heartworm testing. Inquire about, and purchase your annual prevention. Purchasing for the year helps cut the cost of prevention and makes it very convenient to have on hand for every 30 day administration.

Camden Vet Clinic sells heartworm prevention in clinic that you can take home with you at the time of your appointment!

We can't wait to see you and make sure we keep all your fur family healthy and happy! Remember, prevention is far less costly and much more comfortable than the treatment is!

Happy Weekend Everyone! We would like to take this time to spotlight a feel good moment!

This past week, we would like to thank Camden County Animal Control. They received a call about a dog that was stuck in the mud. Upon their arrival, he was stuck in the mud up to his head. They brought him to us at Camden Vet Clinic.

We were able to give him some loving, a bath, and a good look over. We are happy to report that the next day, this precious fur baby was reunited with his Momma, who was super grateful for saving her best friend and fur child!

Spring HAZARD #5 according to the AVMA

5) Spring cleaning and Household Cleaners.

Before the spring cleaning begins, there's a few substances to be aware of.

Typically, surface cleaners can result in clinical signs of toxins, such as vomiting and diarrhea. However, there are certain cleaners that are
very dangerous if ingested, or if they come into contact with your pet's skin. They include:

-Drain cleaner
-Pool chemicals
-Concentrated dishwashing chemicals
-Lime-removal products
-Oven cleaner
-Concentrated toilet cleaners

Clinical signs include red/raw skin, blistering,
pawing at the mouth, severe drooling, not
eating, and lethargy.

If you believe that your pet has come into
contact or ingested anything that is toxic, it is important that you contact your veterinarian immediately.

Spring HAZARD #4 according to the AVMA.

4) Bee Stings.

Our pets are curious by nature. They explore the world with their noses and paws, making them prime targets to insect Stings.

In most cases, there will be mild swelling and tenderness. Be sure not to squeeze the stinger. It will cause more venom exposure. Instead, you could use a credit card to scrape it out.

Some pets are allergic to bee stings and will need emergency medical care. If your dog or cat starts vomiting or becomes lethargic after a bee sting, it is a sign of anaphylactic shock,
and a clear indicator that they need
immediate care.

Springtime HAZARD #3 according to the AVMA

3) Gardening

Fertilizers that are sprayed onto yards are typically fairly safe unless your pet ingested it directly. If ingested in large quantities, it may be toxic, causing gastrointestinal irritation and obstruction. If ingested in small quantities, it may cause mild stomach upset and loose stools.

Pesticides such as the compound called Organganophosphates, commonly found in plant care products, are toxic to both cats and dogs. This compound can be life-threatening even in small amounts.

Pesticides that contain metaldehyde are highly toxic to cats and dogs. Ingesting this can cause seizures, vomit, diarrhea, and incoordination. Typically, it is a sweet smelling substance, which inherently attracts pets.

If you believe that your pet has come into contact or ingested anything that is toxic, it is important that you contact your veterinarian immediately.

Spring hazard #2 According to the AVMA.

2) Fleas, Ticks, & Mosquitos

Warmer temperatures for these pesky bugs mean baby making season. They are not just a nuisance, but they are disease carriers and can cause severe health problems.

Fleas carry disease, including the plague, and act as host for tapeworm.

A common tick-bourne disease is Lyme disease. Ticks should be removed as soon as they're spotted, as they can also cause the animal an allergy.

The mosquitos' main threat to pets is that they are carriers of heartworm.

To avoid parasite infection, talk to your veterinarian about prevention such as Nexgard Plus, which is a 3-in-1 chew given once every 30 dsys for heartworm, flea and tick prevention.

WOW, how time flies by!

Springtime is approaching quickly, and with spring comes hazards to your pets.

Stay tuned! Over these next 5 days, we will post the top 5 Springtime Hazards according to the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association).

1) Easter

With Easter just around the corner, here are some hazards to your pets to be aware of.

Chocolate:
A potentially lethal dose of chocolate for a 16lb. animal is only 2oz. of bakerā€™s chocolate.

Plastic Easter Grass:
If ingested, this could be very dangerous and cause intestinal blockage. A good substitute for plastic grass is tissue paper.

Lillies:
You may not know, but lilies are extremely toxic to cats. They have a tendency to chew on them, and any part of the lily could potentially cause kidney failure.

If you believe that your pet has come into contact or ingested anything that is toxic, it is important that you contact your veterinarian immediately.

Did you know, that according to the AVMA, (American Veterinary medical Association,) that Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats? By the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as your pet grows older if effective preventive measures arenā€™t taken.

Early detection and treatment are critical, because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet. Periodontal disease doesnā€™t just affect your petā€™s mouth. Other health problems found in association with periodontal disease include kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month!

Is your fur baby struggling with bad breath? Do you see that yellow-orange tarter build up on your cat or dogs teeth? If so, it would be a good idea to have your pets teeth evaluated for early detection and treatment.

Camden Vet Clinic offers dental exams, cleanings complete with polishing and fluoride treatment, dental radiography, and extractions when necessary. We also sell items to help keep teeth clean and breath smelling fresh for in between cleanings!

Just give them a call to schedule an appointment at 912-882-8886. Or visit www.CamenVetClinic.com and use the telehealth system to request an appointment. Just look for the blue and white chat bubble located in an the lower right side of the web site. We look forward to hearing from you, and help serve the needs of you and your pet!
