Unless you have traveled extensively to interact with a variety of wolfdogs and owners, I HIGHLY recommend new owners get professional help. Wolfdogs can be amazing canine companions but only if raised properly from the start. Wolfdogs are too smart to think that humans know all the answers and they don’t respond well to dominance. When raised with some key points in kind though, wolfdogs and their owners have a much more enjoyable life together. Like us. Like Tony. Like a lot of our friends who did their homework before buying. It works.

We know Tony personally and helped shape his early understanding of wolfdogs (as so many others did for us.) Then, he started teaching me… 😘 Tony understands canines in a way that I never experienced and can explain his thoughts in terms of how we raise children - very easy for everyone to understand.

There are only a couple of people Lupine Grove would recommend for a new wolfdog owner to contact for professional guidance and as far as we know, Tony is the only one that’s doing remote learning for new wolfdog owners.

Compared to the price of a quality wolfdog and containment, this is NOT a lot of money to significantly improve your chances of success. Don’t just take our word for it, as any wolfdog sanctuary if they’d recommend a new owner hire an experienced “mentor” for the first year.

MYTH BUSTING INCOMING! 🐾

A common misconception is that wolf dogs make good guard dogs.

In fact, wolf dogs do not make good guard dogs at all!

🐺 Why is that?
This is because wolf dogs are often neophobic, meaning they’re typically afraid of anything new or unfamiliar. This could be a place, person or many other things.

🐺 How do they respond?
Wolf dogs will run and hide from anything that is new, unusual or frightening. This is similar to how wild wolves act when they face something unfamiliar in their territory.

🐺 Where is the issue?
Some people assume or think that their northern breed or aggressive acting dog is a wolf or part wolf. Unfortunately however, this is just perpetuating the misrepresentation of wolves and wolf dogs, by misunderstanding their actual behaviors.

🐺 It’s important to know the natural behaviors of your animals. Working with and owning wolf dogs requires a LOT of patience, trust, respect and compassion.

Fear of wolves has no basis in today’s reality.

Fear of wolves has no basis in today’s reality.

One of the most common myths we dispell here at Wild Spirit is that wolves are aggressive, confident creatures that want to eat, or otherwise harm, humans.

The truth is, wolves tend to fear and avoid humans due to neophobia, the fear of anything unfamiliar. Although there are a plethora of myths related to wolf attacks on humans, this reputation is exaggerated.

In 2022, Linell, Kovtun, and Rouart of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research carried out an in depth study of wolf attacks on humans between 2002 and 2020 in various countries. Their conclusion was that the risks associated with a wolf attack are “above zero, but far too low to calculate.” The study found that in that period of 18 years, there was only evidence for 2 fatal wolf attacks on humans in all of North America - one in Canada and one in the United States.
