The DEC's execution of this warrant raises concerns about overreach and the invasive nature of its actions. Subjecting the Longos to a five-hour search without allowing them basic comforts shows a disregard for personal privacy and property rights. The decision to euthanize both P’nut and Fred without exploring less drastic measures such as quarantine or observation was not only excessively harsh but lacked compassion. Instead of outright euthanasia, there are alternatives to manage wildlife such as monitoring the animals for symptoms while respecting the lives of the animals involved. Why was the DEC not accompanied by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, definitely raised our concern. One may justify the DEC's actions due to public health concerns, BUT not all situations warrant immediate euthanasia. The DEC’s methods raise questions, and obtaining a lawyer is definitely in the Longos' best interest. The story will not end here.
