🦃 A Thanksgiving Reminder from BHPH!🦃
As you gather around the table with your loved ones later this week, don’t forget about your furry friends! Here’s a quick guide to ensure your dog has a safe and healthy Thanksgiving:
Foods Your Dog CAN Enjoy in Moderation:
✔️Turkey (Plain & Cooked): Skinless, boneless, and free of seasoning. A great source of lean protein!
✔️Sweet Potatoes: Plain and cooked (no marshmallows, butter, or brown sugar).
✔️Green Beans: Steamed or boiled without seasoning.
✔️Pumpkin: Plain, cooked, or canned (NOT pie filling with added sugar and spices).
✔️Apples: Sliced and free of seeds and core.
Foods to AVOID Feeding Your Dog:
❌Turkey Skin & Bones: The skin is fatty and seasoned, and bones can splinter, causing choking or internal injuries.
❌Stuffing: Often contains onions, garlic, or spices, which are toxic to dogs.
❌Gravy & Fat Drippings: High fat content can lead to pancreatitis.
❌Mashed Potatoes: Butter, cream, and seasonings make them a no-go.
❌Desserts: Especially chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute), and nutmeg in pumpkin pie.
❌Alcohol & Caffeine: Even small amounts can be harmful.
It's SUPER important to be cautious because fatty or rich foods can lead to pancreatitis, a serious and painful condition that inflames the pancreas.
Symptoms of pancreatitis include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, contact us immediately! Pancreatitis can escalate quickly and requires prompt (and sometimes extensive) treatment.
This Thanksgiving, give your pup a special treat from our “safe” list or consider a dog-friendly holiday treat recipe.
🧡 Wishing you and your pets a Happy Thanksgiving! 🧡
