It’s important to take puppies out to new places, but always make sure your first time out is just for a shot period of time because you never know how comfortable or uncomfortable your puppy will be in the new environment. Just like you see in this video of Skippy’s Walk&Train, although my boys, Goliath & Marcelo, and I have gone to PetSmart, Home Depot, a coffee shop and all different parks, I wasn’t expecting him to be as afraid of all the floor surfaces as he was. As well as also being overstimulated by the elevator ride and just the grandness of the mall, going from rugs to the slippery laminated floors was just too much for Skippy. I therefore kept our visit super short in order to ensure as positive experience as possible.Once we left I immediately took the dogs outside to sniff some grass to help Skippy relax and “ground” himself. This also helped us end on a more positive experience sniffing grass than a negative one. As you scan see in the video, Lilah does not look very comfortable hanging out with me in this@cafe, however, the more I take her out and give her the opportunity to see that there’s nothing to be afraid of, she will start to become more and more confident. Maybe she’ll even lay all@the down and chew on the treat I gave her in a more comfortable and confident way. Socializing and building up a dogs confidence is not easy work, but incredibly rewarding when you put in the time and have the patience. Keep up the great work Lilah! I’ve been doing Walk&Trains with Charlie since he was just a little puppy, so our sessions have changed as Charlie has progressed and grown. Most puppy owners love to take their new puppy to PetSmart, but they usually have a lot of important things to buy for their puppy, making it hard to concentrate on what is needed to buy and what the puppy is doing. To help prevent this confusion and chaos, the first time you take your puppy to PetSmart, just go for practice just so you get a better idea of how your puppy will behave. Will they be afraid of the cart? Will they try to eat everything? Will they bark at every other dog they see? Etc. Practice runs help you better prepare for when you actually need to go to PetSmart and buy something with your puppy. My garden stand was a bit slow due to the holiday weekend, so I took some time to work on desensitizing Goliath from getting surprised and barking every time he hears me say hi to a neighbor/customer. I know both my dogs want to be out at the garden stand with me (they do everything else with me lol), but I know Goliath and how high his territorial and protective his instincts are, so I knew I would have to be ready and prepared to take the time to practice with him. I know that as long as I keep practicing and trying, even if some days are worse than others, he’ll eventually be able to feel more comfortable rather than surprised and protective. Small streams, rivers and/or lakes are great places to introduce your puppy to the water just like I’m doing on my Walk&Train with Charlie! This is because:1. They can walk in as deep as they like and can get out easily with a nice gradual incline (as opposed to stairs in a pool).2. The water doesn’t move to much (waves in the ocean, even small ones, can be scary to puppies)Swimming is great exercise for puppies as well your dog as they enter their senior years! Charlie is a mini bernedoodle puppy who is SUPER scared of when the groomer touches his paws. In this video I am using positive reinforcement to help Charlie not be so scared.Things to notice:1. Most groomers use a nail filer not clipper, so working with an electric toothbrush helps recreate the noise they will hear at the actual dog groomer.2. I don’t just stick to one thing for too long, I move on to touching his paws as well as simple obedience to help keep Charlie feeling like we are doing something more fun than scary. 3. I always make sure to start giving Charlie treats BEFORE I do anything that coukd possibly scare Charlie and stop BEFORE Charlie is done with the treats to ensure that he is feeling more positive feelings during our session than negative ones. Even small behaviors that indicate Charlie is afraid can eventually lead to him not wanting to do this with me anymore. Our daily, on leash, socialization sessions are definitely paying off. Not only are both boys on leash, but they also have Kongs to help them redirect any high energy toward sit help them calm back down while around the chicks.
