Charlie is a mini bernedoodle puppy who is SUPER scared of when the groomer touches his paws. In this video I am using positive reinforcement to help Charlie not be so scared.Things to notice:1. Most groomers use a nail filer not clipper, so working with an electric toothbrush helps recreate the noise they will hear at the actual dog groomer.2. I don’t just stick to one thing for too long, I move on to touching his paws as well as simple obedience to help keep Charlie feeling like we are doing something more fun than scary. 3. I always make sure to start giving Charlie treats BEFORE I do anything that coukd possibly scare Charlie and stop BEFORE Charlie is done with the treats to ensure that he is feeling more positive feelings during our session than negative ones. Even small behaviors that indicate Charlie is afraid can eventually lead to him not wanting to do this with me anymore. Our daily, on leash, socialization sessions are definitely paying off. Not only are both boys on leash, but they also have Kongs to help them redirect any high energy toward sit help them calm back down while around the chicks. My boys, Goliath & Marcelo, love to be off leash and I love it too: it’s great exercise physically and mentally as well as a great bonding experience. Practicing your front door routine, like Archie here, is SUPER important when training your puppy! It helps your puppy learn Impulse Control: the impulse to run our the door, the impulse to jump on your guests, the impulse to bark like crazy and so much more.
You don’t just want to practice opening and closing the front door though with no one there and sometimes having a real person behind the door is just too hard at first for some puppies, so practicing with “imaginary people” behind the door is really a great baby step to help your puppy get to the next level of this technique. By practicing this technique, you’ll also notice how your puppy has already picked up on specific words and phrases you say when you answer the door that get them excited because they know that means a person is ACTUALLY behind the door. To help, just like in this video where we pretend Archie’s NoNo (grandpa) is behind the door, this technique will also help your puppy learn how to Control their Impulses better when they hear these specific words. Notice how she pulls the treat away when Amber breaks the Sit-Stay to try and get the treat faster. It’s important to be strict about these types of rules so that the lesson you are trying to teach is as clear as possible for your puppy. Remember that even though they are adorable and we want to treat them as if they are human babies, they are a different species that can not understand us full. Tuck is a rescue beagle who is very afraid of the car (as well as has some other fear/anxiety issues). I have Tuck’s parents doing multiple positive reinforcement exercises to help him get over this fear and this video show one of them. We put yummy treats inside the car and I’ve Tuck his space to collect the treats as he feel most comfortable. We repeat this game several times and encourage his parents to do it every day. When dealing with a fear it’s normal to want to see fast progress, but unfortunately this type of training is all about the baby steps. When we started this game, Tuck wouldn’t even put his front paws on the car, but as we kept playing, you can see in this video how his confidence built up to now trying to get his back paws inside the car. We want this game to help Tuck associate the car with something more positive than negative. Keep it up Tuck!
