This was the first experience of having a watermelon for the 5 pigs recently here from being used for medical research in a lab.
They did not know what to do with the watermelon.
They would lick it but not put it in their mouth to eat it.
We then gave a watermelon to the pigs that are next to them in the larger sounder and once they watched those pigs eat, they went over and started to eat the watermelon they were given.
Typical Very smart pigs.
They learn by watching!
Mid day in the heat of summer 3 legged pig Maggie enjoying frozen blueberries
Big Tony welcomes the boys newly freed from lab
Big Tony is a senior pig needing special care.
He has the freedom of the many acres yard.
This morning he walked over and saw the new pigs in their first morning here!
Not long after piglet Stella arrived we learned of a young mini pig who was orphaned at 3 weeks of age.
This is the first meeting of Stanley and Stella.
He is one month older and we be a typical 150lbs mini pig at full growth in 3 years.
Stella will mature into a VERY LARGE girl.
This is a special time to be friends learning sanctuary life together.
Welcome Stanley!
Piglet Stella meets cat Felix
2 week old Stella piglet was the height of the 10 month old cats leg!
The day after Halloween is a pumpkin party day for all the pigs!!
24 year old Mona was one of 93 pigs to come here from a hoarding situation years ago.
We took the unsocial bunch.
They continue to be untouchable but have lived loved with the company of each other. Very bonded.
Mona was to the vet for yearly dental and hoof trim.
She had 3 Giant molars removed.
Recovery is no different from a person having teeth removed.
She can’t have pelleted pig food but can have cooked pasta and canned peaches or pears.
She is a tiny thin girl and her serving of pasta is the amount of a large human family of 6. Pasta is always on our wishlist!
First Breakfast for two month old piglet Benjamin and four month old piglet Petunia on the community table with all the other pigs.
All is good.
Very very good!
Today was a very big day for 4 month old piglet Petunia and new rescue 2 month old Benjamin.
Today they joined the large sounder.(group of pigs)
Petunia has been living in the TLC area with her 2 adoptive pig moms and the many other special needs pigs.
She will grow up in this bigger space of 34 acres meadow/woods.
Curious and inquisitive Young Benjamin will also grow into an active fellow with friends to spend the day with.
Adding piglets into an established sounder is always a safe and happy day.
They are welcomed!!
Tomorrow will be their first breakfast with the community.........
12 week old Petunia is recovering from her spay surgery in a quiet place with no pond because she must keep the surgery site clean and dry.
Today is a hot summer day with many pigs cooling in ponds.
Petunia loves her block of ice as a cooling option!
It will last 24 hours.
Every day in her afternoon and only in the afternoon nap, piglet Petunia will fall asleep with her tongue out and have eating dreams.
She was orphaned and may have little memory of mom and siblings before they all died.
I can’t change her past but like all who come to us, I can offer a lifetime home with a pig family. A very very large pig family!
We still have patches of snow on the ground but today was a warm 49 degrees and 4 week old Petunia was out for the first time to explore.!
Here She loves her moment in the water.
Petunia loves her shopping bag “toy” so much she took it to bed to sleep next to it!
No different than a child with a new favorite toy!
While the dogs are outside piglet Petunia discovers rolling balls can be fun!
