FUZZY BRITCHES FIBER·SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2019·

Fuzzy Britches Fiber is a small hobby farm located in Stanwood Washington. As a spinner, I was intrigued by the notion of raising my own fiber. We currently raise Blue Faced Leicester and Tunis Sheep along with Angora Rabbits. We strive to raise our animals on a small scale in a healthy setting. All of our animals are humanely raised,

and are first and foremost pets. They are lovingly cared for, and in return supply our small farm with fiber for spinning, compost for the garden, and hours of enjoyment. We work hard to advocate for these amazing animals, and all of the resources they can provide. Our dream is to build a viable fiber business using locally sourced wool, while providing a loving and forever home to the animals who have provided us with so much!

From trash to treasure
All wool has a purpose and transforming our wool skirtings into beautiful, functional, and eco-friendly rugs has proven to be a delightful experience.
Although this wool may have been deemed unsuitable for spinning due to its coarseness, short length, or impurities, it lends itself exceptionally well to rug production. We are always looking for ways to use every last ounce of our wool and as an added bonus we get to try (and fall in love) with new pursuits.

The amazing growth of Angora Rabbit wool!
On average, a healthy adult Angora will grow around 1 inch of wool per month. That means by the time a naturally molting angora releases their fiber the typical staple length is 3-4 inches. A great fiber length for spinning!

2-ply Vs. 3-ply Yarn:
2 ply yarns are oval and create a slightly textured yarn.
3 ply yarns are round and create a thicker, more structured yarn.
3-ply yarns are more durable and stand up well to abrasion (think socks). The rounded structure of the 3-ply creates great stitch definition. When used in cabling and other stitch patterns the 3 ply will help the patterns stand out and stay crisp. Every yarn has its strengths and projects that they are well suited for.
Pictured is some of our handspun Tunis yarn. The yarn on the left is 2-ply and the yarn on the right is 3-ply. Can you spot the difference?
