FUZZY BRITCHES FIBER·SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2019·

Fuzzy Britches Fiber is a small hobby farm located in Stanwood Washington. As a spinner, I was intrigued by the notion of raising my own fiber. We currently raise Blue Faced Leicester and Tunis Sheep along with Angora Rabbits. We strive to raise our animals on a small scale in a healthy setting. All of our animals are humanely raised,

and are first and foremost pets. They are lovingly cared for, and in return supply our small farm with fiber for spinning, compost for the garden, and hours of enjoyment. We work hard to advocate for these amazing animals, and all of the resources they can provide. Our dream is to build a viable fiber business using locally sourced wool, while providing a loving and forever home to the animals who have provided us with so much!

The Egg Barn Returns!
Following a prolonged and challenging winter, our chickens have returned to laying eggs consistently, and we are thrilled to offer our surplus to the community.
For the 2025 season, the Egg Barn will be open solely on Sundays, commencing tomorrow, March 16th. As always, the egg barn operates on a first-come, first-served honor system, and we appreciate your continued patronage.

As one of the oldest breeds of livestock developed in America, Tunis sheep have a fascinating history. They are a heritage breed, and have been bred over time to produce multipurpose animals adaptable to many conditions.
I found myself drawn to Tunis sheep not only as a shepherdess, but also as a spinner. The ivory color, dense locks, solid crimp, and medium feel make for a beautiful yarn.
With a fiber diameter between 24-30 microns, Tunis falls into the medium-fine range of wools. Most people find Tunis to be comfortable worn next to the skin. Their wool makes a lovely yarn with shades of cream and white.
Tunis is a great spinning project for both novice and experienced spinners. The wool has a nice crimp that helps to make it ‘grippy’ and easy to spin. The end result is a strong yet lofty yarn suitable for a variety of projects.

What’s on the wheel Wednesday:
A Tunis and Angora blend. There is a bit more prep work blending the fibers and creating the rolags to get them ready for spinning - but it is a rewarding project.

Local wool is a beautiful asset for every community to have. Each individual fleece is truly special and tells a unique story. When you purchase local wool not only are you helping a small farm, you are also helping to build and support your neighborhood.
Within our community you can find a wide variety of wool sheep; we are excited to feature our local farms and their beautiful fiber in the upcoming Wooly Fun Breed Study. The first meeting is happening later this week and there is still a spot available, contact us to learn more!

2-ply Vs. 3-ply Yarn:
2 ply yarns are oval and create a slightly textured yarn.
3 ply yarns are round and create a thicker, more structured yarn.

3-ply yarns are more durable and stand up well to abrasion (think socks). The rounded structure of the 3-ply creates great stitch definition. When used in cabling and other stitch patterns the 3 ply will help the patterns stand out and stay crisp.
Every yarn has its strengths and projects that they are well suited for.
Pictured is some of our handspun Tunis yarn. The yarn on the left is 2-ply and the yarn on the right is 3-ply. Can you spot the difference?
