Dr. Calvert & CVT Liz met Bruno last week. Bruno is about 14 weeks old and came all the way from Alabama! The owner tells us they have a DNA test in the works…we’re all curious!! Look at those adorable “Dobby the House Elf” ears.

Introducing the newest AKC dog breed, the Danish-Swedish farmdog. The DSF has become the 202nd canine breed recognized in the American Kennel Club’s purebred registry. According to the AKC, the breed is coordinated, agile, fast, and must have daily exercise. A member of the Working group, prospective owners should be able to give this breed the exercise and mental stimulation that it needs. Danish-Swedish farmdogs tend to be people-oriented, and they have few grooming requirements, needing only an occasional brushing and bath. Here at CAH, we encourage you to do your breed research before deciding which cute puppy to bring home. Evaluate your family's needs before selecting the breed that would be the best fit for your family.

Vesuvius is a brown tabby Maine C**n kitten who recently came in for vaccines. Check out those toes! (He has at least one extra on each foot; many Maine C**ns are polydactyl, having extra toes). His owner kindly shared additional pictures of this handsome fellow so we can all see some of the breed characteristics, such as the extra toes, the tufted ears, the long, thick, waterproof coats with fluffy tails, and the big-boned frame. Maine C**ns are affectionate, friendly, and gentle, and are said to be dog-like in their disposition. They are also natural swimmers!

We can't emphasize enough how deadly this deep-freeze weather can be for pets, whether they are indoor or outdoor animals!

Outdoor dogs, cats, and bunnies MUST have proper shelter. Bringing them into a cold garage is not enough either, unless you provide warm bedding (straw, not hay), layers of blankets with cardboard underneath, cardboard or styrofoam boxes with blankets or straw inside...).

Indoor pets going out even for short periods of time may also need coats unless they are heavily-coated breeds. Great Danes, poodles, pugs, beagles, French bulldogs, greyhounds and nearly all toy breeds are unsuited for spending time outside right now. A quick potty trip may be all they can take. Coats and even boots are highly recommended if they'll be out for more than a hot second!
