Happy Sunday, all! What a beautiful day here at the farm. Should be 65° today, blue skies and peaceful as can be. ☀️
Soaking it all in before the cold and rainy weather gets here later this week. 😱

I love watching this. This is Kira. After eating about half of her morning hay, she turns it into bedding. Sometimes trying to nibble while she is half asleep. When she wakes up, she’ll finish it and carry on with her day. ❤️

When mother nature plays hardball, we step up our game!

Tonight, all 27 horses got a warm soup with their dinner. This provides hydration, electrolytes, other good nutrients, and something warm on their belly. Oh and they LOVE IT!

Considering we don’t have hot water at the barn, it took a few extra minutes, but one additional thing it provides is better sleep for the humans! When we know they are okay, we are okay. 😉 So I call it a win-win. 😊

What are your tips, tricks and hacks to get your horses through these cold snaps?

Hello friends! Just a quick update, specifically to our boarders. We are just a bit chilly this week! But…We are good. Horses are good. Keeping hay in front of them is key to keeping them warm. They are getting all they want and then some. Those that need additional support with blankets, have it. Our biggest challenge is keeping water troughs from freezing but we work hard at keeping them all safe, happy and healthy! Looking forward to warmer temps later this week. Stay safe. Stay warm!

Winter weather ready! 🥶 We’re likely getting a cold rain/sleet, or even freezing rain tonight. It’s a time consuming task to blanket 25 horses, especially when they are in a herd setting.

Super thankful to Kyle for being willing to do what it takes to make it all happen. Couldn’t have done it without him. Thanks, Kyle!

Stay warm friends. 🥰

Because of the nature of what we do we watch the weather like it’s a part time job. So to say this snow took us by surprise is an understatement! The horses did amazingly well, even those that came from south Florida and have never seen snow. ❄️

Good morning, friends! 🐴 It’s been a BUSY 6 weeks. It’s a good thing we are better at taking care of horses than we are at social media! 😁

We’ll get caught up this week!🤞🏻 But we just want to give you a quick update. Since the beginning of October, we’ve welcomed 4 new horses. (New welcome posts to come). Unfortunately had to say goodbye to 2 amazing horses. 💔 (The worst part of what we do) Opened a new 11 acre pasture. Reconfigured 2 existing pastures. Had 2 shipping containers delivered that are currently being fabricated and repurposed into shelters. Shuffled all the horses around to better accomdate them for winter. All while still giving the best quality, individualized care to each and every horse.

We thank you for following along with us. We love what we do, but whew, it’s been a long 6 weeks! 😉

We have had over 30 horses here at the farm. Larissa was #3 to arrive at NSR in early 2021. She has thrived in retirement and we are thankful to have her here!

Hello friends.

I’ll be honest, this week has been heavy. We’ve had a few horses that need extra attention due to illness or injury. Which is always heartbreaking. We’ve encountered an unprecedented hurricane just a stones throw to our west. It’s hard. It’s a lot.

And then this unexpected moment. A small moment of happiness. A moment of beauty. If you’ve ever encountered a hot air ballon, you know, pictures don’t do it justice. It was peaceful, beautiful and so much fun. Everything we want our farm to be. The horses needed a moment to figure out why this big, crazy thing was invading their space, but they are adaptable, amazing creatures.

Looking forward to the lighter and brighter days ahead. We had no idea they were going to land in our pasture, but it was a welcomed distraction.

Have a good weekend, friends!

Just wow!

Just wow!

All the areas in dark blue were greater than a 1,000 year rainfall event. Meaning a 0.1% chance of happening in any year.

HURRICANE HELENE FARM ANIMAL ASSISTANCE:

We are in contact with several animal organizations that are on scene in Asheville and surrounding areas to support cat & dog evacuations via air. Please know there is not presently a plan to evacuate large animals because the roads are impassable and there is no way to get trailers in or animals out. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE INTO WESTERN NC. All passable routes are for emergency use only.

Remember that there is no cellular service to the area and impacted residents are not able to communicate. For this reason, we are not accepting donations at this time, but we are compiling a list of resources when we are called to assist. Email [email protected] if you can provide the following:

-A place to accept evacuated farm animals (specify type and #)
-Pledges for donated hay and grain
-Halters, lead ropes, shavings, or transportation

Monetary donations to assist horse owners should be made directly to Bissell Pet Foundation or Fleet of Angels

We will update once we hear more. PLEASE SHARE!!!

A summary of our local mountains. Just heartbreaking.

A summary of our local mountains. Just heartbreaking.

Here's what I know and don't know, this morning about Western NC.

Still little communication and almost zero cell service. If you read this from those areas or know someone there stick with text messaging, These messages only needs to ping a cell tower to go through. So don't send pics or videos, just text! This can work with almost no signal or service. Some landlines are actually working, but only a few.

Lake Lure Dam made it, engineers checked it out, and it survived. Chimney Rock Village north of the lake did not do so well; it was mostly destroyed, and debris washed into Lake Lure.

Asheville is a mess, almost completely cut off by road. Many washed-out roads and bridges and many firehouses have been destroyed, so first responders need help as much as the residents. They have better ways to get stuff in and out than surrounding mountain communities.

In other counties, I'm hearing lots of information that sounds like many landslides and washed-away homes and buildings. So, I don't want to speculate, but honestly, it doesn't sound good. Some rescue crews are trapped as well; the ones that went out first thing yesterday also became trapped. So, in some cases, the rescuers need to be rescued.

Communication: I have been in contact with 2 people with Starlink and generators, but they are also cut off from moving around. If you know someone with Starlink and power, please pass along any info you can.

What can we do? I talked with some EM people, and many resources are now pouring into the western Carolinas. Stuff deployed by Helene's heads was spread out over the Southeast. Now, it's all heading into the mountains. WCNC and I are going to try to work with Samaritan's PursePurse next week to get relief. They're heading there already and have logistics to get supplies to the people. Also, the American Red Cross is doing great stuff.

Also, if you know shelters or churches accepting people, let me know. I have had a few people make it out but don't know where to go for a shower or hot meal. Here is the current list of shelters:
https://www.readync.gov/stay-informed/open-shelters

I will post anything I can find out, but I still can't reach most places in the mountains yet. Here is an excellent resource for more information and help. https://www.readync.gov/

Good morning friends! As the news comes out about the devastation in North Carolina from hurricane Helene, please know we are good. In areas of our state as little as one hour from here, complete communities and cities were wiped out from flooding. We are so so fortunate, but recognize that so many weren’t. It is heartbreaking to see the devastation. If you were directly affected and need help, please reach out. I don’t know how we can be of assistance, but we can at least try. It might be as simple as sharing resources. Stay safe, friends!

Good morning! We’re good! Horses are good! Humans are good. It’s all good! The worst is on top of us now. Let’s all politely, (or not) wave goodbye to .
