Sweet Willa came in as a stray and this cutie is a gentle and sweet soul who is ready for her forever family. She did great when meeting a neutered male of similar size here, never seeming to be bothered by his rowdiness at all. This precious face is a pretty good descriptor of just her overall sweet demeanor. Please come and meet this 51 pound 2 year old sweetie, named Willa. You may fall in love, so be prepared for that! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. Her fee is waived!

08/29/2024

He's still here and he asked us to remind you that YOU need a Franklin in your life!! Franklin greets you with the sweetest meows each time you enter and he is ALWAYS so happy to see you! Three minutes later, you leave and come back, still happy to see you! This sweet 2year old found his way here as a stray and presented with a URI, feline lice and a slight head tilt! He has fully recovered from his URI, has been fully treated for the lice (hence this rockin' hairdo!) and he had an ear infection which caused his head tilt! This boy LOVES attention and will solicit all the loving you want to give him!! He is also FeLV positive. What does that mean? FeLV, or Feline Leukemia Virus, is a virus that affects the immune system of a cat. It is not a form of cancer but is a virus that may weaken the immune system and may make opportunistic infections and certain types of cancer more likely. Cats with FeLV can live normal, happy lives—they may just have a shorter life expectancy than FeLV negative cats.
How do cats get FeLV?
FeLV is spread from cat to cat via prolonged, direct contact with an infected cat’s saliva (sharing food bowls, grooming each other, etc.), urine, and/or blood. The virus can also be passed from a queen to kittens during pregnancy. FeLV is species specific, so other animals such as dogs cannot contract the virus. The virus dies rapidly in the environment, so you won’t have to worry about carrying the virus on your clothing. It is recommended that FeLV+ cats only live with other FeLV+ cats or on their own. FeLV+ cats should be kept indoors only. Please come and ask to meet this sweet boy if you can provide him with the loving home he so deserves! His fee is waived!

We have a serious question! Here goes... Question: What is better than adopting a rooster? Answer: Adopting 3 roosters!!! One more serious question: What is even better than adopting 3 roosters? Final answer: Adopting 3 roosters with NO ADOPTION FEE! That's right, these three have overstayed their welcome here (not really, we are just adding dramatic affect) and they are getting kicked out of the barn (no one's getting kicked anywhere! They just need a home!)! If you have been looking for a rooster to add to your flock, your clutch, your family, whatever you are calling it, they are looking to be a part of it! Please come in person for more information and let our adoption staff know that you are interested in 1 or 2 or even all three, if that's the case! All have been tested and all are healthy and ready to go! Again, their fees are waived!!
In a particular pecking order:
Roo3/A294452: brown/black, age unknown
Roo2/A294451: tricolor, age unknown
Roo1/A294450: white/black, age unknown

08/28/2024

We wanted to share Kelsie Fischer's entry from North Iredell High that she submitted for NCDHHS's Fight the Bite 2024 campaign in April! Kelsie took 3rd place with this entry! Congratulations Kelsie! ❤ For 6 years, Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed that that particular month (April) be recognized as Tick and Mosquito Awareness Month.

Since those pesky skeeters didn't take her advice and back in April and are still here causing such a raucous, we decided to share with you some vital information to help protect you and your pet in the hopes that you can protect yourself and your pet, and maybe they will get the message and just leave us all alone, already!

For starters, we encourage you to 'tip & toss'!! If you have or find a container with standing water, tip that thing right on over to empty the contents... then toss that thing right on into the appropriate receptacle! (Unless you are into all the DIY stuff and decide to make a crafty cool doohickey out of said container, then by all means, go for it!!

Even after you 'tip & toss', ask yourself this question, is your pet protected? Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs, cats, and ferrets. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. The worms are spread through the bite of a mosquito. The dog is the definitive host, meaning that the worms mature into adults, mate, and produce offspring while living inside a dog. The mosquito is the intermediate host, meaning that the worms live inside a mosquito for a short transition period in order to become infective (able to cause heartworm disease). The worms are called “heartworms” because the adults live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of an infected animal. (https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/keep-worms-out-your-pets-heart-facts-about-heartworm-disease)
The best treatment for heartworm disease is PREVENTION! Many products are FDA-approved to prevent heartworms in dogs. All require a veterinarian’s prescription. Most products are given monthly, either as a topical liquid applied on the skin or as an oral tablet. Both chewable and non-chewable oral tablets are available. One product is injected under the skin every 6 or 12 months, and only a veterinarian can give the injection. Some heartworm preventives contain other ingredients that are effective against certain intestinal worms (such as roundworms and hookworms) and other parasites (such as fleas, ticks, and ear mites). Year-round prevention is best! Talk to your dog’s veterinarian to decide which preventive is best for your dog.

The American Heartworm Society Link Disclaimer advocates to “Think 12." Give dogs 12 months of heartworm prevention and get them tested for heartworms every 12 months. Here are some do's and don't's of heartworm protection! https://d3ft8sckhnqim2.cloudfront.net/images/Think_12_PDFs/Think12Dog_Dos_and_Donts101316.pdf?1476362471

When protecting your furbaby's health, check out the above links... when protecting yourself, follow Kelsie's lead to Fight the Bite and remember to always 'tip & toss'!!

Griffin came to us as a stray and we are still learning about him... what we do know is that when he met our greeter dog he wasn't ready for anything other than maybe hanging out and possibly talking about their favorite toy or stuffie, but if it came to being rowdy and rough, he may just take a pass. Griffin appeared at his finder's property and was then brought safely here when his finder met our ACO to do so. Griffin is estimated at 1 year of age and weighs 42.20 pounds. Please come and meet this cutie-pie in person to learn more about him! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption.

Heathcliff came to us as a stray and this handsome fella is now ready for adoption! We are still learning about this 2 year old Anatolian Shepherd and he is all smiles while we do! Heathcliff weighs 59.60 pounds and he met another dog here at the shelter, and while some dogs want to get to know one another, Heathcliff found a bush he liked... or and there is grass here!! You get the idea! He did allow his greeter dog to sniff him all over with no issues at all and it didn't put not one damper on his bush and grass sniffing activities! This sweet boy is ready for a family of his own and if you have a herd you need a guardian over and a couch that needs occupied when that is done, that is what he was bred to do! Their instinctive nature to protect their loved ones makes them good dogs in families with older children who understand how to interact with dogs! For more information about Heathcliff, please come and meet this gorgeous doggo in person! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption.

He did meet another dog while here at the shelter, and while he was interested in meeting him and learning about him, he was still digging the humans a little more. ⚠️⚠️⚠️URGENT COMMUNITY PANTRY NEED⚠️⚠️⚠️ We offer pet food to citizens throughout Iredell County who may be experiencing difficulty making all ends meet, while still being able to provide food to their beloved family pet(s). This is a temporary assistance program to help those in that moment of true need, to be able to keep their pets at home which is where they are not only loved and cared for, but where the pet is the most comfortable and familiar! Being able to provide this assistance is in the best interest of that pet(s) and we are honored to help!
To give perspective, Iredell county has more than 203,000 residents, and while not all need this service, there are many who do. As a result of the ongoing and magnitude of the need, we are DANGEROUSLY LOW on ALL PET FOODS and we need your help! If you are able to donate and/or are able make a monthly commitment to donate pet food through a delivery service, you will be helping to keep our kennels open for those animals who are TRULY in need and are homeless.
❤️❤️❤️We are in need of LARGE bags of new, unopened and unexpired food in all of the following categories:
Dry adult dog food
Dry adult cat food
Dry kitten food
Dry puppy food
Again, if you are able to donate, please bring or have delivered to the shelter at 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville, NC 28677
We would love to be a recipient of a monthly donation of this same food, as this is such a great and ongoing need for those who may be struggling throughout our community.
Thank you for your help with this community outreach!! YOU make a difference!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Meet Bug! This little smiling cutie came to us when her previous family experienced a major change in their circumstances and could no longer keep her. She is a sweet girl and lived with another dog at her previous home (other dog in the home was Lady, hence... Lady and Bug!🐞❤). Bug is hoping to live her best life for the rest of her life and would love for that to include being lazy, surrounded by her family, maybe on the couch while they catch a show on TV and she gets belly rubs!! This is her daydream and who can blame her? This sweet 4 year old lab mix weighs 52 pounds and she is ready for home today! Please come and meet this smiling girl in person to learn more about her! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption.

This is Dale just being Dale (which is patient and sweet) and waiting for his debut on WCNC Charlotte with Pierre and Chrissy! These three are letting everyone know about our microchip stations and about NBC's Clear the Shelter campaign, going on now at Iredell County Animal Services and so many other shelters and rescues across the nation! Dale has been here for 50 days today! This sweet dog is indeed patient, he does great with other dogs in playgroups and he is a submissive player! He responds very well to correction and walks great on a leash. He sits, is super calm once out of his kennel and is housebroken! He was so patient and accommodating today during Chrissy's interview, offering to not only sit while the filming was happening, but to be most gracious when being used as a 'model' for the scanning station! This sweet 1 year 6 month old brindle cutie weighs 56 pounds and he is ready for his family to find him and make him a part of them! Please come and meet him in person to learn more about him. We always recommend meet and greets in person with other dogs and children prior to adoption. His fee is waived and his adopter will receive two free training sessions with Highland Canine Training! Be watching for him to make his debut on WCNC Charlotte! If you see him, let us know!

Lady here, just looking cute and looking for a forever home, you know... nothing major! No, ma'am, that IS major and let's help her find her forever! This sweet and friendly girl is 4 years young and she loves to walk with her humans and get out of her kennel, just spending time together! She comes to us as her previous mom experienced a major life change and was not able to keep her, as a result. She is ready for the life of an inside dog and is going to make THE best companion! She weighs 43.80 pounds and this lab mix is just a sweet soul! Please come and meet her in person for more information. This sweet boy was SO READY for his daily run with Lead Investigator Goforth today, as he could hardly sit still to take these ‘before’ pics!!King is such a good boy and a great running partner, although he was ready to come back and rest before Goforth was, this time!! This 4 year old Australian cattle dog mix came to us when his previous family faced a devastating life change that would no longer allow them to keep him with them. He has been trained both on and off leash, he knows sit, stay, lay, place and heel! He loves to cuddle and loved his previous life with children in the home! This affectionate boy has done great while here, and in playgroups has shown that if he were in a home with other dogs, he may do best with one(s) who is submissive and possibly female, but that isn’t ‘concrete’! You know what is though? His ability to win your heart once you meet him, outside of his kennel. He hates that that kennel is keeping him from getting affection from you and from him living his best life in a home! Please come and meet this 43 pound adorable and friendly boy in person to learn more about him. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption.
