Something that I’ve learned over the years as a trainer/rehab/foster dog mom. Not all dogs can be positive trained, not all dogs can be balance trained, and not all dogs can be adverse trained. Each dog has specific needs. You can’t positive reinforce a 100LB bite machine just as you can’t adverse train a high anxiety abuse case.

Please remember if you aren’t seeing progress after months that your trainer could be using tactics that just isn’t suited for your dog. I personally balance train. I taper to what the dog needs. A good trainer isn’t going to tell you one way is the only way. A good trainer will explain to you a dogs behavior/body language, explain what they are doing and why, individualize a training plan that is for your dogs needs. All dogs thrive off of something different. Every trainer can always learn something new. I’ve been exposed to training since I was 4 years old. I’ve been a professional trainer for 8 years, I’ve shadowed under 5 trainers in different states, I’ve completed my CCPDT, I’ve worked closely with vets, I graduated from college, yet every good trainer STILL learns. Every good trainer will tell you that they don’t know everything. I’ve seen some great trainers on here and some that think one way or the highway. At the end of the day do what’s best for YOUR dog. If you don’t like something a trainer is doing speak up, if you’re confused ask questions. Trainers don’t fully run the show. We are here to guide you, teach you, and create the perfect bond between you and your dog. YOU call the shots.
